I didn't know anything about this company before I hired them to replace gutters on a rental house for us in Franklin. They were very responsive! They matched the color of the new gutter to the house very well. They also added gutter guard. We were so happy that we asked them to add gutters on our log cabin in the same county. We weren't knowing what to expect since it is rustic with a metal roof. They did a beautiful job on it as well! It blends right in and was placed perfectly. I would recommend this company to anyone!

Marcus was prompt, curtious and professional. He was very reasonably priced and did an outstanding job. He pressure washed the entire home and did the window treatment as well. The siding and windows looked like new! He did such a great job that he is coming back for another project. We will definitely be using him as "our pressure washing guy" for all our future projects!

Dutch is phenomenal! He is always prompt, professional and just an overall great person. Although the work on removing our hardwood floor was a bigger project than anticipated, he completed the job with a smile. He exceeded our expectations with the installation of our new porcelain tiles! He also has done carpentry work for our home when our dogs decided to chew through a window sill and moulding. He is now our "go to" guy!

Andrew Eastin repaired a window that had cracked. It was a small job for a reputable contractor, but he was willing to take it on. Andrew was very responsive on my first inquiry with Thumbtack and set up the appointment within a short time. He came on time and stayed until the job was completed. I plan on using Andrew for other projects that I might have in the future. You will find him very professional and reasonable.

He cut and installed a door at my house in the 12 South area, and I was so pleased, I hired him again to install a glass pane in a large commercial door at my vocal studio on Music Row. Very professional, thorough, detailed, and well-priced. Overall incredible experience, and will be using him again.

Steve recently installed window awnings on our home. He was extremely professional, precise, equipped with all tools needed, and very efficient. Not only did he schedule service within two days, he came on a Saturday morning and arrived 15 minutes early! He also made recommendation in the process that really enhanced our home's exterior decor. I am so grateful to have made the connection and have already planned to call him again for another project. I totally recommend him for home repairs!

Description Of Work:  Zen Windows replaced five windows in the front our house including a large bay window. The original windows never worked very well and the window frames had dry rotted over the past 20 years. Zen Windows replaced the old windows with high quality aluminum windows. Brad the owner of Zen Windows met with us and explained the advantages and disadvantages of the many options we had in replacing the windows. He was very knowledgeable and helpful in answering our many questions about the best choices for our needs. Brad is a very congenial person who communicated with us in a timely manner through emails and phone calls over a couple of weeks as we made our decision about which windows to order. Everything was done in a very professional and efficient manner. The windows were ordered and an installation date was set. Brad and his crew arrived exactly on time and finished the project the same day. Brad on more than one occasion told us to let him know about anything, no matter how small, that wasn't exactly what we expected and he would make sure our expectations were met. Everything went very smoothly and we are delighted with the quality of the windows and the craftsmanship of the people who installed them. I honestly don't think the project could have gone any better. We will definitely use Zen Windows again as we continue to replace the original windows as our finances permit.

Jeff inspected the windows in question, taking exact measurements and gave me an accurate estimate on the spot. When the glass manufacturer delayed delivery, he called and then came the next day to install. I would hire Adkins Glass again.

Mr McClain was hired to perform a variety of repairs at our home. They were: 1- repairing an area of our kitchen hardwood floor that had been damaged by a water leak from the refrigerator, laying tile to do so on part, 2- remove a cabinet above the fridge, 3- replace the tread boards on two sets of stairs, removing carpet, finishing the treads, and installing the new ones, 4-replace and fix the outside lower sill of three windows, 5- replace two ceiling lights with a light/fan and light in the kitchen/eating area. Mr. McClain was very easy to work with. He is very knowledgeable and able to facilitate these repairs. He was very patient with all of my questions and shared what he was doing if I asked. His fees were very reasonable, and he communicated well his responsibilities and mine in these repairs. I would definitely ask him to come again when we have more things to repair.

Wayne recently replaced a bedroom floor, installed new windows and did a bathroom remodel for us, with a new tile floor, refurbishing cabinets, changing out the fixtures and adding a beadboard to the lower halves of the walls. He had great suggestions for ways to improve the look of the bathroom. The hardwood floors look terrific and Wayne went above and beyond when he found a way to get a large closet done with the available materials, (which had not been computed to include the closet.) The windows look great and no more leaks.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

      • Trim repair:
        • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
        • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
      • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
      • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
        • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
        • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
          • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.
