Introduction: Tutoring Services: Do you or does someone you know need help learning or improving his/her French? I'm an experienced, one-of-a-kind language professional who can help you achieve your goals. I bring together five years of graduate training in French Linguistics, residence in France, professional work as an interpreter and experience teaching French at the world's premier language school. Whether you're a student taking French in school or an adult planning a trip abroad and looking to sharpen your communication skills, I probably have something to offer you. My approach is one that's heavily informed by my study of language acquisition at Indiana University and that can be tailored to meet your individual needs. In my approach to teaching French, the spoken language - as used by native French speakers - occupies a central role, and I put a special emphasis on how French is used in authentic communicative contexts. I enjoy helping people understand French from my own bi-cultural perspective versus an insider's or outsider's perspective. I like helping students make linguistic connections in a way that lets the language come alive and empowers learners to claim ownership of the language. I have a particular interest in teaching idiomatic language and speech acts (such as forming requests, refusals, suggestions, offers to help, invitations, etc.), as well as developing learners' listening skills, focusing on the construction of meaning in a "bottom-up" approach. My goal is to help you build a foundation for sustained and enthusiastic learning of a living language. If your reasons for learning French have to do with France's literary tradition, you'd be well advised to look for another tutor.

Ben is very patient and a real language education specialist. I appreciated his personal qualities. If you choose him as your French teacher, you can be assured of having an excellent, experienced teacher, well-versed in French culture.

FAQs

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Private lessons for improving proficiency. Private lessons for struggling high school students. Private lessons for people with a specific goal, such as preparing for an upcoming trip.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Look for someone who is himself/herself a proficient speaker of another language. Native speaker teachers are often NOT the best ones, especially if they only speak THEIR language well. Look for someone who understands the language learning process. Ideally, look for someone with training in linguistics or second language acquisition. Ask about the person's experience with the culture of the target country. Does the person identify as an insider or an outsider? Finally, look for someone who can explain to you what it means to actually learn a language. If their answer is mostly about grammar, and especially verb conjugations, beware! You want someone with a holistic approach, who understands the big picture.
