Introduction: Many teachers seem to make singing a complicated and sophisticated thing. I believe that our bodies are built to sing and project the voice, and that there could be nothing more basic to us than making what I call "singing sounds." The first thing a baby does when he or she is born is to take a big deep breath and cry - that's a singing sound! We then spend the next 18 years being told to "be quiet"... we have to get back to that basic singing sound that we do involuntarily. My teaching focuses on the many things that affect how we breathe - how we take in the air and how we let it out again. My teaching focuses on listening to the body and letting it speak for itself. Great singing in all musical genres is the most exhilarating sound there is. The human voice communicates far more in its volume and tone than any words we could choose to say. When we hear great singers we respond to them instinctively. The deeply meaningful form of communication is worth all the practice and effort. In this sense singing is no different than speaking: we understand how someone is doing less by what what he or she says, and more by how he or she says it. Helping people learn to use the expressive capacities of the human voice is why I like to teach.
