I have pretty severe anxiety so to say I was nervous about moving for the first time by myself is an understatement. Honestly, I didn’t need to worry at all. Walter and Ben were not only punctual and friendly, they got the job done really well and really fast. I got quotes from a few other moving companies before finding Family Movers 615, LLC and they all quoted a higher rate and a longer time estimate. If I ever have to move again, I definitely know who I’ll be calling.

John and Martin were fantastic! I had to book them last minute - four days before the actual move (since two other moving companies didn't respond or gave us poor excuses for why their quotes increased after multiple conversations), and John, the owner, was extremely responsive and professional throughout the whole process. They moved everything from our second floor, two bedroom apartment to our new third floor, two bedroom apartment (both places with stairs only); disassembled and reassembled a king bed, queen bed, and sectional couch; all without a single scratch or scuff, in rainy and muggy summer weather in just four hours! I'd give them 10 stars if I could. Did I mention they were extremely affordable?! Will definitely be booking them for our next move, and highly recommend!

Patrick and Jeff were excellent! They kept me informed about their arrival time and actually arrived ahead of schedule. They were very knowledgeable and worked very efficiently at packing the moving truck. When we got to our destination and unpacked, not one item was broken or damaged. I recommend them without reservation and would hire them again. Moving cities can be a very emotional and challenging time. Patrick and Jeff handled their part of the process with professional, excellent service and we appreciate all their efforts. Truly outstanding!

I needed a bedroom worth of stuff moved from Nashville Tennessee to New York, NY, and I was below the minimum for most large-size moving companies. Hallelujah haulers offered to do the move for approximately half the price and could finish it in only a couple days. The good: Friendly, on time, quick, good communication. Price was excellent. The bad: - Despite my repeatedly saying he needed two people, he only brought one person to New York. I had to help him unload some stuff and hold doors open. - Not the gentlest movers in the world. Some of my stuff got nicked/got wet in the rain while unloading Bottom line: the service was definitely worth what I paid, and I would use them again (though, not if I had really nice stuff)

They did a nice job moving our heavy items up 3 flights of stairs on a hot and humid evening. One of the bell hops got into a wreck on the way to our apartment (luckily I don't think he was injured), but they were able to find a replacement at the last minute. Also, we ended up only needing them for an hour and only had to pay for the time that they worked (plus travel).

They were on time, fast, efficient, and the best part is it was inexpensive... other moving companies in the area were asking triple and quadruple the amount that Music City charged! I had zero issues and they delivered with great service!

These guys were very communicative, rates were easy to understand, and they were cheap. Big con: they were an hour and a half late. And I was their first job of the day. They said that there was traffic and then that their GPS has sent them to the wrong address. My opinion is, you allow time for traffic and your GPS is an inanimate object that you tell what to do. I started to panic that I was going to get stood up, but I was assured they'd get the job done. They arrived and got straight to work. They apologized for their tardiness and had me walk them through what needed to be done. They did not slack for a second and seemed to wrap and pack things carefully. Their truck was smaller than most moving trucks but they knew how to pack up everything I had neat and tight. They unloaded into my storage unit again, neat and tight, and right in the two hours they'd quoted me. While I wish I could have gotten some sort of credit for the hour and a half I sat and waited, I certainly can't complaint about their price. I'm sure they'll just keep getting better.

I highly recommend Lend-A-Truck for any in town moving needs. Jim was incredibly nice, pleasant to be around and work with, punctual, hard-working, and understands not only how to properly handle and pack furniture and household goods, but transport them safely and securely as well. I had no doubt utilizing Lend-A-Truck, that my household items and furniture were in good hands, going to show up without any concern for their being damage, and that I was supporting a local business with a solid work ethic. Jim is prior Navy, so as a veteran myself, I was happy to hire Lend-A-Truck. It’s easy to tell from my first conversation with Jim, that this is a company I could trust, especially since moving is a relatively stressful experience for most. Jim helped make this move of mind, seamless. I will most certainly call Lend-A-Truck in the future for any potential moves, and I will gladly recommend them to my family, friends, and social network. 5 Stars, 10/10, best moving experience I’ve had.

I contacted them on very short notice. They arrived on time and moved a 2000 square foot home for me. They were very friendly and overall it was an enjoyable experience. Well as enjoyable as moving can be. They worked 10 hours but the day was so long because we were not packed or anything, we ended up closing on our house a week early so it was a last minute scheduling. The only thing I would suggest that i have experienced with other moving companies, and i have moved a LOT and used moving companies from 2 men and a truck to local movers, would be to allow clothing to stay in the drawers and just wrap it, and also to put beds and such back together. We have a TON of stuff and miraculously the only thing damaged was my coffee table. I would use them again. Just be prepared to put your furniture back together yourself and keep up with the nuts and bolts. Their rates were very reasonable as well.

We used merapex Moving on our last move and highly recommended them to a friend who was leaving the area in a week for a new job. Wife worked 12 hour days and husband was disabled so not much help getting packed. Alex and his great team took care of them! They did all the packing, moving and setting up in their new home! I am beyond impressed with the courteous professional full-service treatment Amerapex Moving offers to their customers! Best movers!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
