Chris did an excellent job installing a new travertine floor in my sunroom. The job was fairly involved in that he had to remove an old tile floor and level the concrete slab subfloor before installing the new stone flooring. The job took a little longer than expected due to weather factors and scheduling, but was completed reasonably quickly considering the scope of the project. The quality of Chris's work was excellent and it was a pleasure to work with him.

When David came to our house to build a simple wooden deck and patio cover, we had no idea what we really wanted. After David drew up several possible plans, my wife and I decided we wanted to change to a pave stone patio, so David rolled with the punches and drew up several new ideas for us. We finally came to a decision and David jumped on the project. What an incredibly hard worker! His expertise in construction is evident in his work. Every joint is perfect, every cut on the money. He never got frustrated with all of the changes we threw at him and has created a backyard oasis for us that we love! Start to finish on this job was about 6 weeks, mostly because of the changes we kept making. We could not have chosen a better man for the job! I have another project down the road and hope David is available (to come back to Austin, TX) to handle it for us! Thank You David!

George Allin transformed my new home’s landscaping and saved me from an immense amount of anxiety! My husband and I recently purchased a home in Middle Tennessee while we were still living out of state. There were a number of landscape improvements we wanted to make before we moved, including installing fencing and a driveway gate, reshaping the entrance topography with a substantial amount of cleaning and clearing of brush and trees, installing a stone border to define the entry and installing sod. I interviewed a few landscapers on the phone and George seemed like a perfect fit. I came to town and met with two of the candidates, but there was no question George was the one. He had great ideas, beautiful photos of other projects he had worked on and a very reassuring personality. He promised he would be on site managing everything, which was critical because I was going to be 4,000 miles away. I am a person who tends to micromanage, so not being here was going to be hard for me. For the next few months George and I refined the design and he gave me various options at different price ranges. Once we settled on the final design and the work started, George was out here for all of the work and would send me lots of pictures and Skype with me to keep me updated. He would consult with me on detail questions because he knew how important the small things are to me. Bottom line, when I drove down the driveway for the first time once we moved, I was elated. Everything was perfect. The reshaping of the topography, a huge undertaking, was better than I could have ever envisioned. The fencing was beautiful, and all of the details were spot on. We still have the planting portion of the project to complete, but I am confident that will work out as amazingly as everything else (and that’s the really fun part too). Although I feel like this is a glowing review, it really doesn’t capture the depth of my appreciation for all that George has done to create our sanctuary here. At my previous home I lived through two significant landscape improvement projects, and they were way more stressful than this one, which should have been more difficult because I was not able to be here for it. But, George made it a breeze.

George laid a stone walkway and porch floor for us, and did a fantastic job. He is very detail oriented and really cared about it being done right, and making sure we were happy with everything. We will definitely use him for any future projects and wouldn't hesitate to refer him to friends.

Excellent experience. He bid the on job, won the bid and followed through with all aspects of the bid in a timely matter. His job was a landscape of front porch plantings, replaced some plants that were destroyed by ice this winter and mulching of all beds. He also fixed some paver stones in a backyard walkway..

We couldn't be more thrilled and satisfied with the work Dave did on our flagstone patio. He was incredibly professional, responsive, punctual and reliable. He also made creative recommendations, like a stacked-stone retainer wall, that turned out just beautiful. We're so grateful for his services and would absolutely work with him again!

We had a pergola built over an existing concrete slab in your back yard. We contacted Elements of Eden to overlay the slab with flagstone and build a stone fire pit. Additionally, they built a flagstone path from our deck to the pergola. Jake had very good ideas about the design and responded quickly with a bid for us. We were very pleased with the look of the finished project. I gave a 4 star rating because we haven't been as pleased as we had hoped with the medium used between the stones. We have many chipmunks in our yard and they have litterally tunelled completely through the polymer medium in places, leaving 5" long tunnels between the flagstone. With this one exception, we were very pleased with Elements of Eden and would recommend them!

I cannot recommend Quality Hardscapes highly enough. Pedro Flores and his team are inimitably professional and knowledgeable and bring a wealth of experience to the job. Their work is meticulous and exact--every surface is level and every stone is precisely laid. Further, Pedro offers competitive pricing, will work with your budget, and is transparent about how every penny is spent. Pedro shows up to the job site every day is crew works, and his crew works full days and will even come out on weekends to get a job finished. Pedro endeavors to start new jobs promptly and finish on time. If there are any delays, Pedro always communicates them in a timely manner. In regards to communication, Pedro is easy to reach by phone or text. You will never not get a response from him quickly. We have used Quality Hardscapes on two occasions. The first was to lay a large (400 s.f.) flagstone patio. There second was to expand that patio around the side of the house, retrofit portions of it to a newly built screened porch, and to build a natural stone, wood-burning fireplace on the porch. Pedro did not disappoint in any way. And the projects have withstood the test of time, weather, and use by four kids, two adults, two dogs, and numerous other families who have enjoyed the patio, porch, and fireplace with us. Lastly, I would be remiss to not point out that Pedro guarantees his work to a degree I haven't seen anywhere else. We had a leak under the expanded patio and thought that perhaps Pedro's crew had accidentally nicked our irrigation system during the work. I called Pedro and he was out with a guy that same day. In sweltering heat they dug up a portion of the patio to determine the source of the leak. Turns out the leak was NOT due to the patio work but rather to an old pipe far below where Pedro's crew had dug. Pedro not only repaired the patio after the irrigation company replaced the pipe but he also did not charge me a dime for the extra work. And this when it wasn't even his fault! You cannot go wrong with Quality Hardscapes. They are the very best in the business, in every way.

I needed a driveway expansion and added patio space in my backyard. Ivan came out and gave an estimate and was able to begin the very next day. Ivan and his crew were very nice and respectful of my place and worked very efficiently. The cost was reasonable and fair based on other estimates I had received. They cleaned up after themselves and I paid in full when the project was completed. Highly recommend Stone Hard Concrete!!!!!

Great company to work with. Kept all timing committments and provided a quality product with excellent follow-up. Joe is creative and performed the work by hand one stone at a time....selecting, cutting, color and size matching and finally assembling a beautiful rock water wall. Clean-up work left the area looking as good as the day work began. Couldn't be happier with the results. Will definately use again as future hardscape projects come around.

We are very happy with the patio and stone walls. We were in the midst of renovation, without time to concentrate on landscaping, and were confident that we would be pleased with the outcome. The crew is exceptionally professional and our yard was always left immaculate at the end of each day.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

      • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
      • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
        • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
      • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
        • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
      • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
        • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
      • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
        • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
        • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
        • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
          • Includes removal of the dura rock.
      • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

      • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
        • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
      • 620 square feet of maple floor:
        • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
        • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
          • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
