Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Jasmin is an extremely professional dog trainer. I needed training as much as my 65 lb. dog, Charlotte did. Jasmin was prompt and started with training right away. More training less talk unless it was my needing direction in the exercise. I highly recommend her for all of your dogs training. I am very pleased with the results.

My Husky Boy has learned so much from this training. He has learned basic obedience which laid the foundation for Boys future training to be a service dog. Dean was very polite and always on time. He was patient to train my dog (and my two cats that just wanted the cheese) to be the best dog Boy could be. I would recommend him to anyone out there looking for dog training.

My little dog is very fearful.-frightened of strangers. Not the K9 trainer! My dog was analyzed and I was told exactly what could be done to help her. And how it would be done

Champion K9 Companions did a great job with the dog training! We have 2 dogs and we thought we knew them well but didn't know how to train them, turns out our perception of our dogs behavior was greatly improved after Champion K9 began working with us. We wish we would have hired them as soon as we got our last "rescue" type dog, but hey...glad we found them. I highly recommend Champion K9. They truly care, and are highly trained, professional, and courteous. We would have been happy for them to help us in our lives, but they said they only train dogs (LOL). Thank you Champion K9, you took what we thought to be an unsourmountable task and make it educational and approachable and most importantly FUN!

We just completed a 4 day dog training session with our 10 month old maltichon Maisie. It was a wonderful experience for the whole family. Dean is very patient, both with the dog and the humans. 😊. He definitely “speaks dog”. Maisie really engaged with him and was always excited when he came over. We loved having the training in our home- it made it feel very specialized to our dog and her needs. Dean uses positive reinforcement training and it works! We saw improvements in her behavior right away. She will now wait at the door before we open it to either greet a guest or go outside. She is also learning not to jump on people when she sees them. All 4 paws need to be in the floor! We continue to reinforce the commands she learned with Dean and she is doing great! I highly recommend Double D Dog Training. Dean is very professional, punctual and is a great communicator- both with dogs and their humans!

Yasmin was professional and very helpful with our intelligent disobedient dog. She made many practical suggestions which we implemented immediately. We highly recommend her for obedience training and her down to earth understanding of dogs.

Working with Aubrey was such a pleasure. She really is the dog whisperer! She helped me train my German Shepherd puppy to be potty trained, crate trained, and all her basic obedience. I saw results immediately and I know how to make them last now. I would definitely recommend her!

I had not had a dog in a while and never participated in training one. I was nervous but Yasmin walked me through every step. She quickly answered any questions I had or concerns and always had great recommendations for ways to change the behavior. Very professional and knowledgeable. Our last training session is coming up and I am excited to continue using the techniques Yasmin taught me and my dog.

Aubrey is a very patient trainer and is extremely knowledgeable in her field. My dog is learning to work through her timidness/anxieties and is having a good time doing so. She wasn't as receptive to training in the past so I'm very happy with the results so far.

Tay was great. She instructed us in some valuable training techniques, which are proving helpful in addressing what we viewed as undesirable behavior in our generally great dog.

I was having trouble walking my German Shepherd on a leash. He wanted to attack bicycles, joggers, and other dogs. He's 80 pounds and 1 1/2 years old. Needed help! I found Yasmin on here. My dog had the basic commands down. After 3 training sessions and me working with what we learned, he now walks by by side, and I am able to take him to parks. I'm so glad she responded to my quest for dog training. You won't be disappointed! She's really good!!

Yasmin was awesome. Her method of training was excellent and it was very hands on training so we have learned a lot from her. Our dog have been behaving aggressively toward family members so she helped us figure out the problem and how to fix it. Definitely will use here services again if I need it.

My dog responds so well to Yasmin. Her methods were easy to understand and to keep up with after. It’s been a few months since my Saint Bernard finished training and he’s a different dog! Before I couldn’t take him in public with him being aggressive towards every dog. Today we spent two hours walking around the Pearl and he was exceptionally well behaved. This wouldn’t have been possible with Yasmin’s help!

Aubrey is incredibly professional and very knowledgeable with her training. Since our first interactions, she has been wonderful. She works well with our stubborn pups, which we thought might be difficult at first as we had just added another dog to our family. I look forward to several more training sessions with her and would recommend 10/10.

My German Shepherd Freya recently has become very startled with people. She barks like crazy sometimes lunges and I didn’t know what to do for the longest time. I decided to hire Double d dog training and he taught me how to teach freya all the basic obedience training and how to redirect her when she barks at people. And I’ve been working with her every single day for the past two weeks such a different dog now. Huge improvement with people, her and I have a better connection, and now she knows obedience commands. Highly recommended!

Taylor knows her stuff. She always tells you the reasoning for her methods and helps you to understand what your dog is feeling. Tay is very gentle with our puppy and works incredibly hard the entire time she is with you for training.

This dog trainer helped me keep the lab I rescued! My doberman hated her, but Aubrey helped him to stop being aggressive towords her. I really didn't know if I was going to be able to keep her! But now they are the best of friends.

Excellent communication on setting up training. Our dog learned how to go to his place when doorbell rings. Walks now without tugging. Stays until set free when asked. Comes when called. He made tremendous progress in two weeks!

We have owned several German Shepherds over the past 22 years. Over the holidays we added our newest puppy to our household. Previously we had the benefit of our older dogs assistance with training our new additions. This was not the case with our new puppy. We hadn’t trained a German Shepherd in about 12 years. We decided to look for professional help. After quite a bit of research we decided that Yasmin would be the best fit to help us train our puppy. We cannot express how impressed we have been with Yasmin, her professionalism, her patience (mainly with us), and her ability to take us from having a playful puppy, to moving towards our goal of having a happy, playful, yet obedient companion that we can take wherever we choose. Yasmin not only helps to train the dog, but she helps us to understand the importance of us participating in the training and the bond that forms during this developmental stage of the puppy’s life. She also helps you to see that the puppy wants to do well and obey, but he doesn’t understand how we are to communicate to work as a team. Yasmin has helped to bridge that gap from day one. And for that we are truly grateful! We recommend Yasmin for all of your training needs and will continue to turn to her for training and guidance whenever the need may arise. Thanks Yasmin!

We got about halfway or less through the program with the same number of visits a previous dog had for a fraction of the cost at Petsmart. This dog knows less despite being very bright and cooperative. In addition, the trainer canceled appointments and never tried to schedule again until I asked for a refund of the unused sessions. Then she refused the refund. I was fine with paying more money if I received the services I hired her for. I did not and I did not feel as though she dealt professionally with my dispute.
