He was knowledgeable and friendly and did a phenomenal job! Am I going to use his services again? You bet! I already scheduled some other work! :)

I hired JWR Home Service for wall mounting installation for 3 separate rooms in my apartment. I did extensive research with all other services that advertise through thumbtack as well as some outside of the website. I found that JWR provided the best deal and decided to go through them. It was the best decision I made, from the beginning it was an easy process. Scheduling and payment was a breeze, Jason showed up promptly at my door on the day of installation. He was polite and professional, he provided his input when needed and listened to my request with no problem. If your struggling with all the headache that comes with T.V. wall mounting JWR is your cure. Avoid all the hassle that comes with worrying about which wall mount to purchase or what tools you need. Jason knows his job and knows it well.

Michael and his assistant arrived on time and were very professional. They hung several shelves in the nursery, installed a baby gate and hung some bike racks in garage. We are having them back out to do more work this weekend. I would recommend Michael and his team.

We had Ben install a couple of TV mounts with dropped cords and a baby gate requiring some customized bracings, plus some simple shower heads. Ben did a fantastic job and was very communicative and courteous. The job took a bit longer than I had estimated but only because of some eccentricities of our old house which he overcame handily. There was a little collateral damage, which he came out to fix up right away without question. Very fair dealer. I am more than satisfied and would use again. Highly, highly recommended!

Despite threatening weather the entire week, Keith and his crew were able to repair my roof and living room ceiling leak in just two days time. They also repaired the carport roof and replaced rotten wood and did some finish work on the storage shed and fence gate. They hauled off most of the junk branches from the yard, repaired the gutters and said I can call them to come out and clean the gutters and sweep off the roof yearly. They also left me with a couple of cans of touch up paint. I'll be calling them again in the fall for tree trimming as well.

JR and his partner were great. I hired them to install some clothing racks in my second bedroom (to turn it into a closet) and hang my jewelry rack on the wall. They did both quickly and efficiently, troubleshooting for a couple of bumps along the way. They even took a look at a problem I had with my back gate and fixed it - for a totally reasonable rate. Great experience - will definitely use them again when I need more work done to my place.

I have used The Fence Rescuer on several occasions and I will never have to look up another handyman/fix it service ever again. The first time was actually a complete face-lift inside my home before we moved in. Frank and his crew worked on several different aspects of my home, from building me a new gate to enclose my backyard, to sealing our attic, and even re-plumbing the back bathroom so it could accommodate my washer and dryer, and on top of it all they even finished the job early. The best part about the experience was the customer service, it was just my mother and I moving into the home, and all of the guys on the crew were not only polite but respectful, and that made us both feel very comfortable. It is truly hard to find trustworthy people that also do such quality work, I know this is a phone number I will be holding onto for sure!!

Trey at S&B did a FANTASTIC job! He removed my old swing style gate and built a 24' electronic sliding gate on my rear driveway. He was punctual, professional, and reliable and made sure I was 100% satisfied before finishing the job. The sliding gate works great and I'd definitely recommend Trey to all my friends and family. His rate was definitely affordable and a great value compared to the big companies. 100% HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I had foundation work performed and over the last 4 years the driveway sank and cracked considerably. R&R of Dallas replaced a large section of the driveway with a high-strength version that properly handled surface water. R&R was prompt, professional, reasonably priced and when finished made the site look like it had never been touched. Tony is a perfectionist and his work demonstrates his attention to detail.

I couldn't of asked for a better experience! The customer service and craftsmanship from this company was outstanding. They were thorough with their work, paid attention to detail and quick with their hands. They converted a guest bedroom in my home into a dressing room and on one of the walls they put in their one of kind, custom made, fabricated heel racks and wedge shelves as storage for all my high heels and wedges. I couldn't be happier with the look and easy access to my heels. Along with the converted bedroom, in our backyard we have a chain link fence that needed some new configuring so that our trailer could be driven in and out of the backyard. At the end of our driveway and facing the alley, there was a diagonal part of the fence that they converted into a custom gate so that with our truck we could have easier access to our trailer. As you can see they have a knack for all kinds of repairs and remodeling! I will definitely hire them again for any new projects or repairs I need.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
