I was searching for a makeup artist to do face painting for a fundraising event where there were going to be lots of children. Thank you Thumbtack for putting me in touch with Alicia. She was amazing. She arrived early and was prepared to go before the event started. She brought a book of tatoos for the kids to choose from, which had a wide variety of options. The kids loved her and she was so patient, even with the kids that changed their minds again and again. She made a lot of kids and parents happy... The work she does is amazing... Lots of Ninja Turtles running around town... I highly recommend Alicia for her professionalism, personality and outstanding artwork. Thanks again Alicia

Durann was incredible! I hired her for hair and makeup for my wedding. When she arrived I quickly noticed how friendly she was and she fit right in with the group of girls. It was like having another bridesmaid there. She laughed along with all our jokes, but was also professional. I told her what I was looking for in a makeup style and it blew my mind to see how well she did. Each girl's makeup was unique to her skin tone, eye color, etc. The eye shadow, blush, and lipstick colors all complimented their natural features, and enhanced it all! She brought another friendly woman named Alyssa to do hair. Alyssa fit right in, too. She was open to trying anything and flexible to make changes along the way. She's awesome at braiding and created gorgeous looks. I will definitely book Durann again!! You should too!

Gail was Senior Designer when I was publisher of Sonoma Style Magazine in Sonoma County, California. She had great talent, imagination and judgment, but perhaps what I appreciated most was her work ethic, sense of responsibility, ability to get along and work well with clients and staff, and her always-positive attitude. I have continued to use and recommend Gail for freelance projects since that time. In 2007 she designed a logo and business cards for my company Bridge Medicine & Health, that I still get compliments on.

Nick Courtright is a name you should know as a tutor, consultant, editor and supporter. I have a "long poem" that needed someone to help me get my arms around it, and Nick did, by understanding and taking the big picture view. Upon completing it I have returned to Nick for guidance as to self-publishing or submitting to publishers. He is knowledgeable, to say nothing of the important attributes of being an excellent poet, articulate, scholarly. I plan to have Nick's help in assembling poems to submit for publication, for editing, selecting and market analysis. He knows more than I do, and I benefit from that. Bill

This year I booked Jacqueline to take a few headshot photos for my staff and for use in our media kit. Before showing up, she researched our team and company and came with her own props. Needless to say, everyone was thrilled. After shooting, she provided proofs for us to sort through and, honestly, there were so many GOOD ones that it was difficult to pick. We have never had company headshots taken before, so we didn’t know what to expect, but her professionalism and work far exceeded our expectations.

“Maude has been our main go-to writer at Target Public Marketing since we met in 2010. As a published writer, she knows what it takes to produce articles that best represent the company’s brand and “voice.” Maude takes the time to research the subject and, at times, interview the client to produce the well thought out articles that showcase the subject and brand. Maude takes great pride in her work, is reliable and personable: we couldn’t be more pleased.”

I hired David to be the editor of my first book, Babies Can Smell Fear. I wanted someone to take my work and make it better without changing my vision. I wanted someone to tell me what did not work in a way to keep confidence high while making the project the best it could be. David accomplished all of that and more. Since I was working on my first book I will admit I did not know fully what to expect or what to do. David walked me through the process and went above and beyond what I asked him to do. He set me up with a design team, helped develop the title and sub title for the book, and answered all of my questions even if they did not fully correspond with his job description. I was very pleased with the final product and so were the Mom's Choice Award judges who awarded my book a Gold level award for Parenting Humor. I know that would not have been possible without David. I highly recommend working with David. He even came to the launch party to celebrate the release of the book.

For my wedding we initially booked an event coordinator that was supplied with the venue.  After a year of a lack of correspondence and care as well as an outright failure to execute on what my wife and I envisioned for our wedding we decided to have Megan take over and coordinate our wedding.  Not only did she manage to schedule and facilitate in the days leading up to the wedding, including working with all our vendors and seeking new vendors which offered superior services at a better cost, but also on the day of the event she was constantly ensuring that everything was going accordingly all while making sure the guests, families and wedding party were enjoying themselves.  At the end of it all we had an incredibly beautiful wedding and reception which everyone thoroughly enjoyed!  I’d recommend her services to anyone planning any event.

I've worked with Jonathan Peters since 2008. He has helped me to publish three books and served as my "book shepherd," teaching me about self-publishing and how to achieve #1 Amazon Best Seller status. He also served as the editor and layout director. His ability to write in my "voice" is extraordinary and he makes me sound witty and brilliant.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

        • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
        • Strong writing skills.
        • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
        • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
        • Expertise in your target area.
        • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

        • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
        • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
        • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
