We were having a decorative arch removed from a wall while having our house painted. The painters mostly demo'd the arch, but realized it was a little beyond their skill set to finish the job. Joel and his assistant arrived the next day and worked quickly and with great expertise. When they were done, you would have never known there was an arch there, except that it wasn't painted. The texture was a near perfect match.

Bobby did a wonderful job painting the interior of my house. He spent a lot of time on it and had great attention to detail. I also trusted him alone in my house, which is saying a lot for me! I'd highly recommend hiring Bobby!

Loyda was very nice and worked quickly. She did a great job in the bathrooms and kitchen. There was places on furniture where she dusted around small items instead of moving them and dusting the entire piece of furniture so we had to redo those. Also, although the tile floors were clean, they were left with a horrible soap residue look. They looked awful. So we had to wax all tile floors to make them look clean and shiny again. The hall closet wasn't swept so we did that. Some closets weren't vacuumed. I guess you have to specifically request every little detail that needs to be done. Overall, good job and seemed worth the money.

I met with several painting companies to paint a two-story high living room with a balcony, angled ceilings and rounded edges and corners with arches, etc. The builder of the home had toasted almond (beige-yellow) textured walls. Needless to say, there were so many challenges with the walls because of all of its differences. It took me two years to interview these companies and to consider the colors. I interviewed Tex Painting and Dan came out to consult with me. The consultation was free. Unlike the other consultations, Dan immediately saw all of the potential in my living room space. I still had a very unrealized view of colors and was nervous about the entire project. I told Dan that I was thinking of red accent walls and a light or true gray for the walls and the ceilings painted back to white from the toasted almond. Dan came in with ease and immediately came up with the idea of 3 red accent walls that happened to be the inset walls of the space and the rest gray. Two years of thinking about painting these walls ended with Dan's vision and recommendations in minutes. Dan showed up on the day of painting and consulted with me and made sure of the plan and colors, collected the paint samples and introduced me to his painters. The painters were quiet, worked fast, respectable and did an amazing job! Because of Tex Painting my living room space was transformed in to something that is so exciting. The space now provides warmth, tranquility and peace. I'm now having Tex Painting paint my kitchen. Thanks guys!

I have used Fixed before for previous issues so I wanted to give them a call again when I needed electrical work done in my house. Fixed came out and installed two light fixtures and a dimmer switch in my dining room. They were prompt, professional and friendly. Their work was quick and great! Wonderful experience and I would recommend them to anyone.

Hired Matt to paint our large living room, entryway and hallway. Living room walls and very high ceiling were painted as well as a lot of woodwork throughout the 3 rooms (and ceiling beams) being stained. Our place looks great! HUGE improvement. Matt was very easy to work with. He began working very shortly after I initially contacted him, worked long hours, finished on time, did a great job and was surprisingly inexpensive. I will definitely hire again for future painting jobs.

Derek and Amando did a great job painting my living room walls and ceiling and down the stairs where the ceiling was 2-story. They actually finished another painter's job in my bedroom and bath because I was unhappy with him. They were fast, efficient, punctual, and no excuses. I would hire Austin Home Solutions again.

Ricky and his team went the extra mile and did an amazing job painting the exterior of our house. When the paint color we chose wasn't "taking" after the first day, Ricky took the initiative to recommend alternatives. Ricky and his Capitol Painting Experts team are skilled, efficient and professional, and I would recommend them to anyone considering a painting job, whether large or small.

I shifted in my new house and wanted to get the house painted. These guys did an awesome job :) Booking them was really easy. They are very responsive, over phone and text. They did a walk thru before the actual job and gave me a very competitive quote. On the day of painting, they were at my house exactly at the time decided. And completed the job very efficiently. They did a great job with my accent wall and game room geometric wall :) I am really happy and will definitely recommend them :)

Single word: Fantastic! I had an upstairs flood that damaged my downstairs kitchen ceiling and Joe was able to get it expertly matched with the rest of the open floor plan's ceiling. I worried that it wouldn't be possible to match it accurately over such a large area with it visible from all sight lines on the first floor so I talked to a lot of people- but Joe won me over immediately with his calm professionalism and good advice. I can sum up no higher praise than this: listened to the issues, explained what he was going, executed on what he said he was going to do, and did so punctually and on budget. When someone says what they are going to do, and then does it- you can't ask for better than that. I will certainly hire him in the future .

Peter Park is a very capable contractor. Our job included sheet rock repair from water damage, painting the room, and repairing anything that was damaged by the leak of a water heater in our ceiling. Peter knew what he was doing. I even let him pick the color of paint for the bathroom. While he was working on that and waiting for things to dry, Peter helped with several other projects. One of our ceiling fans needed a new switch and several light fixtures needed new bulbs. They were located in very difficult locations. Peter also changed out an air conditioner filter. We recommend Peter Park Construction for any job. He researches the project and is very responsible. You can count on him to get the job done.

Ortega's Painting Co did a phenomenal job painting my two bedrooms! They showed up exactly on time and were very professional. They were careful with not getting any paint on the floors and supplied their own tools. I highly recommend this company to anyone needing a great painting project done for a very reasonable price.

Had a very good experience with Jose. He communicated well, was priced fairy, and did a thorough job painting a few rooms on very short notice. Even painted one room twice because he wasn’t satisfied with only 1 coat. After drying the walls looked excellent! Will hire him again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost for an interior painter ranges between $450 and $900. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls. Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $200 to $2,500. The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted. Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards. In one area pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much does a painter charge per room?

The cost to paint a room will vary based on the size of the room, the type of paint you select, any ceiling or trim work needed, and any repairs needed. If no repairs or other additional work is needed, painting a room with contractor-grade paint could range from $1 to $2 per square foot, including materials. Selecting a luxury paint (some cost more than $100 per gallon) will certainly increase your house painting costs. Here are some additional examples of average house painting costs, per room:

  • 12x12 room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 12x12 room with an 8-foot ceiling: about $100
  • 14x16 master bedroom with a 9-foot ceiling: about $150
  • 14x16 master bedroom with an 8-foot ceiling: about $125
  • 16x16 living room with a 9-foot ceiling: about $175
  • 16x16 living room with a 20-foot ceiling: starting at $225
