Introduction: I provide a fun and enjoyable learning experience in a group setting in a nice environment and provide all the drums, without the expectation that students purchase a drum. In fact, my drums are not for sale. I also travel to north Austin every Sunday afternoon and do a 2 hr (all level) class there. Location is convenient to Pflugerville, Georgetown, Wells Branch, Round Rock. I love seeing people discover the joy of hand drumming and see them develop and able to tackle more complex rhythms. I also enjoy giving people the opportunity to perform in public when they are ready. Drumming for good causes gives everyone great satisfaction too....

I love drumming with Mae and the Come Drum For Fun folks! For a little over a year, I've been taking classes in North Austin every Sunday. I have so much fun learning West African Rhythms on both the djembe and djuns. It's a blast! Mae is a wonderful instructor who has a great deal of patience. She's very encouraging and will go over the handing as many times as necessary for it to stick in the brain. There are many patterns to each rhythm, so class is never boring and I'm constantly learning something new. I also really like that Come Drum For Fun supports a local charity every year. Knowing that not only am I growing as a musician, but also am aiding non-profit organizations in my community allows me to feel doubly good about drumming. I highly recommend Mae and her group, Come Drum For Fun, to anyone who is interested in learning how to play the djembe, no matter your skill level.

Mae Stoll is a fantastic music teacher. First, she clearly knows her instruments and the music appropriate to them. More important to me, she teaches in a way that helps the students get the basics quickly and then continues to work with us as we develop our proficiency. Finally, she is exactly what I need in a teacher as she explains and demonstrates clearly, gives clear and kind corrections. She has the patience I need in a music teacher. Furthermore, she helps students set goals by inviting us to participate in performances and yet never assigns us a performance task that will be beyond our abilities. If you want to take African drumming, Mae is the teacher.

Finding Mae Stoll was such a stroke of luck since I'd been attracted to drumming for years. A friend suggested we check out this upcoming class so I went and I found it incredibly fun and do-able! I feared African drumming would be difficult and complicated but Mae's instruction made our first lesson, and every one since, phenomenally fun in spite of the complex rhythms. I am so hooked, and my brain is getting lots of additional wiring! It amazes me and inspires me that Mae is able to get each member of our group drumming different and simultaneous rhythms all woven together in incredible compositions. What a feeling! I very highly recommend Mae Stoll for anyone who has admired this ancient art form.

I consider myself musically challenged and have tried, unsuccessfully, to play several instruments. A few years ago, I decided to try out African drums. I contacted, Mae Stoll, the owner/instructor of Come Drum for Fun (CDFF) who invited me for a 1 hr, complimentary, no obligation class. By the end of the hour, I was playing African rhythms on the drum and I was hooked! Mae is an extremely skilled and talented drummer with more patience than you can imagine. With her knowledge, encouragement and beaucoup patience, my confidence grew and 4 years later, I am pleased to be a part of her CDFF community. She makes the classes challenging yet filled with fun and laughter. and I love every minute of it!

I've been taking drumming lessons with Mae off and on for a year, and she's fantastic! Patient, knowledgeable, breaks complex rhythms down into smaller parts and gives you ways to remember them -- and suddenly the group is producing a wonderful polyrhythmic joyful noise. She makes drumming accessible and a lot of fun (and she uses her drumming for good, raising money for a local charity, which is great).

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Nothing complicated in my pricing. It hasn't changed in six years. $60 for SIX 90 min classes. $75 for SIX 120 min class in South Austin $80 for SIX 120 min classes in North Austin $15/class (90 min), or $20 (120 min) on a class by class basis $25 for 1 hour private lesson

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I provide weekly Hand Drumming group classes and private hand drumming instruction on the Djembe and Djundjuns. I do NOT teach drum kit. Also available: - Rousing Drum performances for charitable, commercial or private events - Rhythm facilitation - get people drumming at your party or other event.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Classes: Come and see what it's like! My classes are relaxed and fun, and held in a comfortable home studio with lots of percussion toys. Beginners more than welcome. The price is right, too. I don't believe that you should have to pay an arm and a leg to have fun drumming. You are never required to purchase a drum. Classes are 90 mins or 120 min and we spend most of that time actually drumming! Need a hand drum performance or think it would be fun to introduce your family, friends, church group, etc. to hand drumming? Let's talk, so that we can customize an event to exactly fit your needs.
