John and his partner is extremely professional; they arrived on time, assessed what needed to be done, and completed the task in a very timely manner for a very reasonable price. They have high tech tools and such a broad knowledge bank that assembly was done in a short period of time. They are honest and fair; I even felt comfortable leaving them in my home while I ran an errand. By far, they are the best of out of the 9 assemblers I have used in the past 2 years and I will go to them in the future. I have recommended my friends and neighbors who purchased quite a few difficult to assembly Ikea pieces and will continue praising their work. I love my entertainment center, my office space, my wardrobe, my book shelves, and bathroom cabinets! They are simply magnificent!

The United Renovations built me a custom wine rack. This wine rack was built in an existing kitchen cabinet. The new wine rack is very attractive and enhanced the appearance of my cabinet. The oak wood was stained to be a perfect match with my kitchen cabinets. It was also perfectly fitted in the space available. It looks like it was an original part of the cabinet. It can not be more perfect.

After interviewing multiple contractors my husband and I decided Greg Vasquez was the best choice for our remodeling needs. Greg took time to confirm our desired outcomes and reviewed recommendations based upon his experience and expertise. That was certainly helpful to have insight as to what products were best for our needs. From kitchen to bathroom, sunroom to living room and office remodel, Greg was able to complete the work and clean up debris before leaving each day. There is no need to contact anyone else in our book, as he has done electrical, plumbing, tile, sheetrock, painting and texturing and gas appliance replacement for us. He even took pains-taking time and effort to level our sunroom slab before re-tiling. In addition, he was able to remove and reset our French doors that were installed incorrectly by a contractor I'll never use again. (We could keep him busy just fixing the mistakes previous contractors have made at my house). Greg is one whom we trust and respect - two vital qualities to consider when hiring someone to work in your house. My husband and I feel Greg has saved us from our endless weekend projects and we can't wait to have the next phase of remodeling commence.

Initially, I hired Kirk to do my deck that needed to be refinished. He was very professional, prompt, and detailed with the work done. I decided not to only do the deck work with him, but also staining my kitchen cabinets. What a difference a color can make! Kirk provided great insight on picking out a good color for the cabinets as well as adding some really cool looking pull handles to finish the look. Overall I could not be happier with the work Kirk and his team did and definitely will reach out to him for any future projects.

Geral was wonderful to work with, and really made sure we got exactly what we wanted. Our new kitchen bench is beautiful! I really wanted it put in before Christmas because we had guests coming over, and Geral made sure to get it done on a short deadline. Great to work with, will definitely hire again for future projects!

Without hesitation I would recommend Rob for any custom cabinets or woodwork. Rob recently built a custom kitchen island for us, which exceeded our expections, not only in quality, but in price, as well. We chose Rob over his competitors for a few reasons. First, he really listened to us to make sure he fully understood what we wanted. We went back and forth with photos of other islands that I liked, and we finally came up with a design that had the best characteristics of the other islands I liked combined into one. He offered his opinion on door styles, post sizes, etc., but was always happy to go with whatever we wanted. Second, his prices are more than fair. He was very transparent with pricing, which I appreciate. I never felt as though there would be added costs that would pop up half-way through the process. And third, Rob was always down-to-earth, honest, and was the kind of person we trusted and wanted to do business with. We were only putting in a kitchen island, not an entire kitchen of cabinets. A relatively small job for someone like him. But he never made us feel any less important than another client that might have a $20,000 job for him. We will definitely use Rob again for our future projects

Adrian came out and retrofitted our kitchen cabinets to install built in cabinets around out our refrigerator. He helped me with the product list to get from Home Depot and when the stuff came in, he went by and picked it up for us. Did a fantastic job. You would have never known that the work was done after we had moved in. Highly recommend.

We needed to get our kitchen cabinets refinished. My husband found Tru-Design Interiors online. Donny, the owner came and gave us a very reasonable quote. He was very diligent and professional with his work, and the results are amazing. We were highly satisfied with the work and would highly recommend the services. Donny, also refinished and repaired a 50 yr. old table for us. The table was solid cherry and had been in the family all those years. It was scratched and the finish was impossible to clean. Donny turned it into a brand new table. I would use Tru-Design Interiors again, because the workmanship was great..Thank you Donny!!!!

Edson and his team did an amazing job! They replaced our floors in our kitchen and pantry, performed a small drywall repair, and replaced our baseboards and cabinet trim. The team was professional at all times and worked with us on last minute requests. We would definitely hire Edson and his team again, and would recommend them to anyone looking to have their floors replaced.

Sarah was a joy to work with on my whole-home cabinetry design. Because I worked with her during my new home construction process, I was able to make changes to the actual design based on her suggestions. She noticed that my kitchen window was undersized, and make suggestions to reconfigure my kitchen bar area to make it a more attractive and useable space. In terms of cabinetry. She immediately understood the look I was going for. She asked good questions about cabinet configurations and provided me pictures to clarify some of her questions. She also provided computer generated and hand sketched samples of what the design would look like. Sarah knows her stuff, and she knows the questions to ask you to get you the cabinets of your dreams, regardless of who the actual cabinet manufacturer is. She is also a great overall designer and was a big help in paint color, flooring and other design decisions. I would highly recommend her!

Jaime responded to my Thumbtack request within five days, and he and his father offered to come out to our home in Round Rock (on Sunday, no less!) before the holidays to look at our project. They were very thorough in asking us what we wanted for our custom built-in installation -- down to the paint color and special drawers, etc. They gave us fair pricing on the work and also ideas on design. For example, they suggested staining the top to match our light grey wood floors. (Close up in picture attached.) Now having used our new built-ins for a month, I can attest to the excellent quality of materials they used in the design. I also love the two slow-closing drawers that they included in the project. On top of doing high quality work, Jaime was able to get our cabinets installed in less than two weeks - even with holiday schedules! I really appreciated the fantastic work he did, and I would use Ramirez Cabinets and Remodeling again in a heartbeat.

Richard was amazing to work with. Very professional, listened to what we wanted and on time. We remodeled our master bathroom with two custom cabinets on each side, featuring drawers and slide outs galore! Granite countertops and soft close hinges add to the overall quality. This guy is a great craftsman and I wouldn't hesitate to reccomend or hire him again! In fact, I'm already making a list of things for Richard to build and remodel more things now that the bathroom turned out so awesome!

Brian was lead Foreman for my company for 5 years. He ran crews and performed work ranging from demolition phase through completion of large high end remodels in Denver & Vail, Colorado. His attention to detail and high end carpentry work is hard to find these days. I would highly recommend Brian for all your remodeling projects ranging from small to large jobs. He can do bath, kitchen, basement finish, and complete home remodels. His hardwood floors are beautiful.

I stumbled upon Tom's professional profile on Houzz last fall (Sept. 2013) in search of someone who could refinish my oak kitchen cabinets in a gray finish I had found in a magazine. I knew it was a complicated process and based on his profile called him to to come take a look at my project. He looked at the photo of the finish and immediately said he could do it. From the first sample, I knew he got what I wanted. Tom is a master craftsman and consummate professional. There are no shortcuts and all of his work is done with exacting detail. I would highly recommend him, and I have him working on another project now.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

    Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

    • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
    • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
    • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
    • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

    How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
