FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
yes, continuing education in the Landscape irrigation community each year to provide the latest changes, procedures and products available. Self education through reading publications and online materials involving my industry. I am an avid reader of gardening books and magazines. I also attend lectures and workshops in the area. Visit botanical gardens, nurseries and garden centers. The best way to learn something is to teach it and I achieve this by teaching horticulture classes, plant propagation and landscape design at the bot the college level and general levels. I believe that knowledge and education are nenver ending. I determine if I've had a good day by answering this question at the end of each day " Did I learn anything new today?"
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I spent 10 years working at Dun and Bradstreet. During this time there was a pond outside my office window. One day I looked out the window and saw a person walking at the edge of the pond looking in the water. They then began slapping their arms. Mosquito's had taken up residence in the stagnant water. The banks were overgrown with weeds. I approached my boss with the idea that I would adopt the pond and organize a team of volunteers to aid in a pond beautification project that people could enjoy. I explained that this would be done on week-ends as a community service project. My boss responded with " if you want more work, I can arrange work for you here on the week-ends, your not a landscape designer!" I explained that extra work was not my goal. I returned to my desk and looked out the window at the pond. I then decided that I would return to college an obtain a degree in Landscape Architecture or Landscape Design. I did exactly that and am so happy!
