Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Are nutritionists covered by health insurance?

Nutrition counseling can be a critical component of good health care, especially for people recently diagnosed with diabetes or high cholesterol who need to adhere to a specific diet. People also meet with nutritionists for help developing a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet, developing an eating plan to lose weight or gain muscle, or improving their sports performance by changing their diet. Nutritionists may be covered by health insurance depending on your reason for meeting with them. Nutrition counseling is more likely to be covered if it is part of a doctor-prescribed treatment for a particular medical condition, such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure or coronary heart disease. For example, Medicare covers medical nutrition therapy services only for people diagnosed with diabetes or kidney disease, as long as they get a referral from their doctor. Also, insurance providers more often cover nutrition visits if the patient has been referred to a registered dietitian within the carrier’s network of providers. Insurance plans vary greatly, so research your benefits before visiting a nutritionist.

How much does a nutritionist cost?

A nutritionist provides expertise and guidance to help clients with all diet-related health matters, including losing weight, gaining muscle, improving their sports performance, and managing diabetes or high cholesterol. Nutritionists can help people learn to follow special diets in a healthy way, such as becoming vegetarian or vegan or developing a low-sodium or gluten-free eating plan. The average national cost of a nutritionist is $60 to $100. Nutritionists often require an initial consultation with a new client, during which they’ll take a medical history, assess the client’s nutritional needs, and determine the best course of action; this first meeting usually averages $100-$120 for a 45-minute to 90-minute consultation. Subsequent nutritional counseling sessions generally cost less, ranging from an average of $45 for a half-hour session to $60-$90 for a one-hour session. Like many professional service providers, nutritionists may offer discounts through package pricing. For instance, a one-month package with two sessions and email support costs an average of $190; a three-month package with three sessions and email support costs an average of $360; and a six-month package with six sessions and email support costs an average of $540.

Rebecca was kind, knowledgeable and encouraging. I went to see her after a 40 lb weight loss and I had been experiencing a plateau with no weight loss in a few months. She got me back on track and gave me some great meal plans and ideas and followed up with me after my appointment. She's an excellent nutritionist and has helped me get back on track!

First of all words have not yet been created to express how amazing Ellie is. She is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Ellie has taught me so much about nutrition and if she can teach me a person who knew just about nothing about it she can teach anybody. She understands people don't always have time to do certain things and offers great alternatives to help you reach your goal. If you ever have a question she always has a detailed answer to help you. She is also very flexible with your schedule so if you can't meet up for whatever reason she will work with you. I could not be happier with all she has done for me.

For those of you on the fence about working with Brian - here's a summary: * I'm a male in my 30s * I lost nearly 40 lbs in 4-5 months working with Brian * I plan to lose another 15-20lbs in the next few months * I haven't been in this kind of shape in over 10 years * I still eat pizza * The coaching was structured in a way that was easy to understand, with a focus on changing HABITS. * Brian answered all of my millions of questions via text because that was my preferred method of communication * I feel confident that I have enough knowledge to make smarter decisions surrounding food and nutrition in my day to day life. * You have to spend money to get some skin in the game and see results * Brian is not a magician - you have to be motivated and ready to make some changes. * EAT MORE FIBER Brian - thanks for your help with my "Andy Wedding Body Transformation". If you're ever in my neck of the woods, lets grab a macro-friendly bite to eat :)

I started Nolan’s training 4 weeks ago looking for a nutritionist to help with my meals- and long story short, I receive much more than that. Nolan has been extremely punctual and responsive this whole time and will gladly answer any questions or concerns you have. His training plan can be tough, but 100% worth the results I have achieved so far. In only 4 weeks i have achieved results I could not imagine doing by myself. If you want a trainer who will push you, encourage you, and be flexible, Nolan is the guy to go to. With his experience with fitness and own journey you can rest assured he knows what he is doing. Already, I feel better with who I am, and have thoroughly enjoyed his workouts (which prior to them I was always bored at the gym and never pushed myself. I would always leave unsatisfied after 45 minutes of low-no intensity “workouts. From the moment I began I have been excited for my progress and will continue to work with Nolan to achieve my goals.) Change requires work, and can be difficult at times - but all the work you put in, I promise will pay off.

Bringing Brian on as my nutritionist/exercise partner was the best decision I made this year! He opened my eyes up to all of the things I was lacking in (who knew we needed lots of fiber right?). He was always super responsive texting back and forth with me from day to day. We would talk via phone once a week where we would evaluate my progress and see where we could make some adjustments and those adjustments kept the momentum going. I used the LoseIt app to track all my foods and it actually became fun once I started doing it consistently, I'd be excited to get those frozen blueberries or that low fat string cheese. I felt like I was still able to enjoy the things I love while losing weight. Before I was eating a very high fat, high carb, low protein diet and I was bloated in my face and stomach. Now I just feel healthier overall and this is due to Brian's constant support and knowledge sharing! I would definitely recommend Brian to anyone who has had trouble losing weight on their own time and time before, he was the kickstarter to my weight loss journey and I am so excited to see what the next few months bring!
