Marisa was outstanding! My husband and I were redoing our wedding photos, and needed to find a new makeup artist. From her initial contact with me on thumbtack, Marisa provided prompt and helpful communication. Then when I had a change of plans the day of our shoot, she was flexible enough to work me in a few days later. At the appointment, she took her time consulting with me to make sure she heard exactly what I wanted. And throughout the appointment I was able to both relax and enjoy our conversation. Most importantly, I loved the final result!

Nicole did an absolutely amazing job with my makeup for new years eve! I don't regularly wear makeup so I was very nervous about having the makeup be too heavy but she did a beautiful job creating a smokey eye with colors that really popped with my outfit. I can't wait to use her for future events!

I had an ongoing MUA for 10 years. When she couldn't make it, I called Bia. She was very open to my wants and adjusted things that I wanted and was very professional. She is super friendly and very talented. I like the total glam look which isn't an amateur task. Bia blew me away with her abilities and being a makeup carnoisseur myself I can personally attest to her work. DO NOT HESITATE to hire her! Grab her now before she moves on to bigger things and more expensive pricing. Yes, she's THAT good. So good, in fact, I'm having her come do my make up once a week from now on. If you want to look on point then this is your girl!! Alicia Hardy

Ana did my hair and makeup for an event and she was absolutely phenomenal! I showed her a picture of how I want my makeup and she did it better than the picture. My hair stayed in place for both day and night festivities. She accommodated me and drove to my place without having to charge a fee and she was so kind! She had all the right makeup tools in case you have sensitive skin, oily skin, dry skin etc. - she comes prepared!

Jessika is an amazing makeup artist with wonderful skills in beautiful makeup application. She did makeup for me and my mother, and we both loved it and got lots of compliments. Jessika also led me and my bridesmaids in a relaxing yoga session the morning of my ceremony, and that was one of the best choices I made for that day. Totally worth it! Rest assured, you will be taken care of and feel beautified when Jessika does your makeup and/or if you choose yoga!

Erica was AMAZING. I had a last-minute request that I had emailed her about literally 12 hours before I needed her and not only did she reply right away, she worked to quickly and efficiently accommodate us. Erica traveled to the office and had the perfect makeup for one of my black executives who was appearing on The Today Show. She was friendly, professional, and put the executive at ease. The end result was a natural, beautiful look that was camera-ready. It was a bonus that the makeup lasted through a major keynote speech and three additional interviews in the Texas heat. I cannot say enough great things about Erica, and hope we get to work together again in the future.

I had a great experience with Fire Blossom Beauty! I've never gotten my hair and makeup done professionally (and I hardly know what i'm doing when it comes to makeup) so I was very happy when I met Michelle who is very down to earth and didn't make me feel like I was asking dumb questions. I wasn't sure what I wanted but she was very patient with me and explained the different techniques. Since I was getting hair and makeup done for my wedding, I was of course semi-stressed out about the end product. I scheduled a practice run with Michelle about a month before my wedding and this definitely eased my stress about how I would look on my wedding day. I was very confident that I would be in good hands! She was also very quick to respond to my messages. On the day of my wedding she arrived early to our appointment so that she could set things up and get started sooner. I'm glad she did this because I am usually a stickler about getting somewhere on time. It definitely helped to take away some of my stress. An overall great experience and you can't beat the price! My hair and makeup remained intact through the entire wedding and even through partying on 6th street until 2AM!

Codie did my makeup for my boudoir photo shoot. I explained to Codie that I wanted to look like a Victoria Secret model, just enough makeup for me to look beautiful but not too overdone. Codie did an excellent job of executing that. She made me look effortlessly beautiful. I love Codie because she’s super sweet, attentive and her artistry is amazing. I would definitely book her again.

Heather and her team did an absolutely beautiful job with both hair and makeup for me and my bridesmaids! Their organization was on point - I had a large group, and they made sure to keep us moving in a timely manner to ensure we were all done in time. And the work they did was amazing! Everyone had different ideas of what they wanted their hair and makeup to look like, and they all delivered! I was so pleased with the overall experience of working with Heather and her team. I'd highly recommend working with her!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
