FAQs
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started out as a recording engineer. I moved to Nashville, TN in the early 90's and began my career. I worked there for almost 15 years. The first few years as an assistant at one of the top studios, 16th Ave. Sound. I then branched out as a free-lance 2nd and 1st engineer working for the old BMG Publishing studio (w/ Chip Young) and privately for artist/producer Jim Hendricks. During that time I would take projects I worked on to the mastering studio (Late Denny Purcell - Georgetown Masters and a couple others). They were my teachers, whether they knew it or not. That got me interested in mastering. I've now been mastering for 18 years. I also started building websites including my first audio mastering website in 1998. I've built probably 50 websites over the years including my own business websites ranging from information sites to full blown e-commerce sites.
- What types of customers have you worked with?
The most common jobs I do are straight forward mastering jobs for independent artists, bands, labels, publishers and producers. I've worked with big names to no names and truthfully, they're all the same. Music is music no matter what level of success the artist or band may have. I do it because I love it, not because of who I may get to work with. As for website clients my customer are mostly small businesses that need and want a more personable experience from someone who knows the ins and outs of design, browser compatibility, search engine optimization, mobile responsiveness, Google analytics, Pay-per-click advertising and more. Having an understanding of all these areas is critical in online success.
- What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Choose from mastering companies that offer a free sample mastering of one full-length song. Being able to A/B your mix to the mastered version, and even auditioning a few different companies, will help you make a more informed decision. Hear what you're getting before you spend your money.
