I can't recommend Shelley enough for her home staging and interior decorating services. I was looking to stage a home. I wanted to do it quickly and with high quality to take advantage of a market window. Shelley was always very prompt in responding to me when I had any questions, setting up her on-site assessment, making a quote, getting the staging accomplished, and was dependable and on time for everything. The staging is beautiful. Her skills are apparent. The house is now under contract and based on my experience with her, I highly recommend Shelley for this and for anything else she says she can do. She's been a pleasure to work with and is very good at what she does.

Dillion from James Mathew Design worked with me to update my 22 year home and stage it for sale. You can see the results on their website. Everyone who came through the house loved it and commented on how beautifully decorated it was. I recently sold it for full asking price! Dillion was a pleasure to work with and was dedicated to deliver all that I was looking for AND MORE! He listened closely to my ideas and shared his own. Throughout the project I always felt that Dillion was committed and dedicated to assuring I was happy with the progress and results. I was so pleased with the entire project and results that I am now using James Matthew Design to design the entire interior of my new home. This project will involve selecting new flooring, wall colors, tile for bathrooms, along with all new furnishings and accessories. A big project that I have trust and confidence will be even more incredible than the last one.

The before and after was amazing. I want Cathy to do the interior design in my next house. I almost didn't want to sell the house! The pictures on the MLS are attracting 5x the traffic, so I know it was money well spent. Highly recommended!!!

We hired Murphy to consult on all the details of our home renovation, including picking out materials, flooring, paint colors, lighting, and furniture. She was incredibly helpful in navigating the hundreds of options that are out there for each item, and steered us towards selections that were true to our original vision for the house. Murphy is very easy going, straightforward, and fun to work with. And her design sense is incredible! We would absolutely recommend Murphy for any interior design or decorating job.

We hired Greg Logsdon and relied on his expertise to guide us through our total home remodel. We met with him for the initial consultation and right away he introduced us to a contractor that he felt could handle our desires and needs for this large endeavor. The project moved along quickly and lasted about three months starting with exterior painting. We were happy with Greg's ideas and selections for paint, flooring, countertops, tiles and tile design, lighting and light fixtures, window and door treatments and even down to the pulls and knobs for cabinets and drawers. Some of the smallest touches made a huge impact for a pleasant surprise on the finished product. Greg was constantly in touch with us and the contractor to make sure that all was on track and that we were pleased. We were impressed with his communication skills in dealing with us and the contractor and his kindness and patience especially with me in my indecisiveness on choices from time to time. That along with his concern that our expectations were met throughout the process. We look forward to working with Greg Logsdon again soon for interior accessorizing, furniture placement and for additional selections for the finishing touches.

Hanniel is a ton of fun to work with! She mad what my husband and I thought was going to be a stressful project into a fun one. We really enjoyed working with her to design our bland place. She not only found great furniture pieces, she also made sure it was a good deal and affordable. She was very sensitive to our tight budget. In the end, she did an amazing job and went above and beyond our expectations. Not only does our home look AMAZING, it's also super comfortable and cozy. We now love coming to our beautiful home. Using Hanniel as our interior designer was the best decision! I recommend her without hesitation. Thanks Hanniel!

Lo helped me choose some furniture accent pieces, select materials for flooring, paint, and kitchen remodel, and place existing pictures and design pieces. She is a delight to work with and her enthusiasm is contagious. I especially appreciated her respect for my ideas when we differed and her willingness to work with existing items.

I wanted to share our great experience working with Well Designs by Marian Johnston. We used her interior design services to re-design our master bedroom. The transformation was amazing. She gave us a beautiful space, translating our wants and needs into a space that we are proud of. From our first meeting where she listened to us describe the 'feel' of the room we desired, to shopping for the decor to bring the room together, to the final completed room, the process was easy and smooth, and the results beautiful!

I have been waiting 15 years to decorate my Master Bedroom. I was totally lost. I left it up to Megan to listen to what I needed and figure out the rest. I really asked her to read my mind- and SHE did it!! I am ecstatic with the results and I promise that I will never wait again! Already planning the playroom- in my head, of course. From now on, I'll leave the rest to Megan!

While we were remodeling our home in Allandale, Marjorie worked very closely with us on design, colors, materials, and reputable dealers. Since then, we have consulted her several times before making making major investments in our property---a roof, windows, and a masonry wall. She is truly a gifted interior designer/decorator who keenly listened to our likes/dislikes, and encouraged us every step of the way to make choices resulting in a comfortable space perfectly individualized for us!

I would highly recommend Decorator for Hire. Alicia helped me redecorate my master bed and bath, creating a relaxing retreat. Knowing I wanted to use my existing furnishings, Alicia helped me select and install new bedding, accessories, decor and new paint for the walls. Alicia was there to give me guidance, but also allowed me to have input in the process. I have a difficult time making decisions so Alicia was very patient and helped me see the big picture and not get caught up in every minor detail. If I had ideas that were above my budget, Alicia gave me alternative options that were within my budget and still accomplished my goal. She had some wonderful ideas that I would have never thought of and wouldn't have been able to do on my own. Her eye for great finds is an added bonus!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
