Mike was great! He replaced two hall lights, installed new towel racks in a bathroom, and installed two new faucets in a very narrow vanity. His work was done professionally and with a smile. I'm always hesitant to invite independent contractors into my home, but after reading Mike's previous reviews on Thumbtack, I was more comfortable with selecting Mike to get the work done. I'm glad I did! Mike is friendly, honest and fair with his pricing. Added bonus, for me, I supported a Veteran owned business. I'm definitely hiring Mike again!

Above and beyond! Those words are a true definition of Jason and work partner Dustin. On top of being very professional and knowledgeable of his profession, Jason was very positive thoughout the whole installation process. I made what should have been a simple water heater install into a compete multi hour nightmare for both of them. But throughout the whole process these guys were incredible! They got the job done in spite of me and the way they both handled the situation proved to me that I contracted the right guy! If your looking for honest, fair, hardworking plumbing contractors, this team is pretty special! Thank you Jason and Dustin, I will most certainly recommend your services!

Bladimir and Francis were amazing. I wanted to repaint my house exterior and I called two painting contractors who gave me bids just for the painting and not for the repairs that were necessary to prep the house for painting. I called Bladimir and Francys and the price they gave me for both the repairs and the painting was so good that I decided to contract them for both jobs. I was amazed by their work, the attention to details and their willingness to work with me. I had some doubts about how they were working on my main door and they stayed over time to make sure everything was done like I wanted. I am definitely going to call them again for all the other works around the house.

Diamond in the rough as far as contractors go! If you need it done, this couple is the one to do it! They're the only company that gave me an estimate and constantly checked up with me and in the end, they stuck to the price estimated even though I asked for a few more things in addition to what was originally quoted. I know the job was more of a pain than they took into account before checking out what needed to be done but the price never changed. This is a true, genuine, honest, (pretty awesome if I must say myself) couple that work together to make their customers happy! I inquired about a few doors and ended up with 4 beautiful doors with new knobs, a hung mirror and a fixed chair and I couldn't be happier! We also found out we know some of the same people!! So glad we found them! Thanks Maury and Melissa!!

We were in a rut after a hidden leak from our dishwasher consumed most of our summer trying to find contractors to get the job done. After many failed attempts from the previous contractor, we thought we were going to go with, I decided to look on Thumbtack for any ray of hope. Low and behold we found TUR construction. Erwin and his team came right over to assess the damage and get a game plan going in less than 24 hours! We couldn't believe we struck gold with our new contractor including the professionalism and confidence they exuded was exactly whom we were looking for from the get go! Today, we have the full use of our kitchen back in working order bc of TUR Construction and enough time left in the summer to enjoy our renovations! Thank you Erwin and team!

Very patient. Explains everything if you need him to....Works til he gets the job done. Very patient....purposely reiterated. Respects what you want but also provides valuable advice if your choice is not the best choice for the project. My place was a mess...he got me all fixed up....Other contractors said my job was too small for them...but after meeting Rene showing him what was needed, he took the job anyway cause he 'wanted to help'. I have a bigger project is pending. Now after seeing his work....the bigger project sitting on the back burner is already his! Super pleasant and friendly as well! Couldn't be happier.

I was very satisfied with the Onyx shower and vanity installation in two bathrooms. My rating and hiring of Felipe was based on pictures of installation of other showers that he had done. Secondly, that not many contractors are versed with the installation of this type of material. Lastly, the tile and paint work that was done was to my satisfaction. The only problem encountered was the delay in getting sheetrock workers for work that had to be done prior to starting the job.

Thanks very much to Daniel and his contractor. Daniel called quickly, followed up with text/phone progress reports for accomplishing task same day as per my request. Daniel was reasonably priced, professional, and motivated to save me money as a home owner (rare). He and the contractor went above and beyond to resolve my home issues. I recommend them wholeheartedly and have added their number to my contacts for future use. Great work gentlemen!

Russ from SoloPoint was simply great all around. To start, he was able to confirm a specific time -- other contractors always give you a large, unspecific window. After several conversations both over the phone and in person, he explained the work he was going to do and what it would cost. I was looking for someone who would take the time to do the job well -- after all, hot water is essential when you're just moving into your new home. He followed up with me to make sure that everything was working properly and nothing was leaking a few hours later. I would absolutely recommend him and work with him again.

I had a lighting project on an apartment complex. Carlos came out and took care of the job, no problem. He was easy to talk to, prompt, attentive, and professional. An all around good guy, couldn't ask for anything more. When it comes to contractors this guy is the real deal. Do yourself a favor and hire him.

Philip can do anything!!!!! Reliable, professional, trustworthy and honest individual who stands behind his work. Our ex contractor did not finished the remodel and we were so glad to have found Philip. He came in and finished up - installed appliances, retextured walls, lighting, plumbing, electrical, fixed the chimney. He basically did everything for us and saved the day! He has also fixed the popcorn ceiling where the storm did damages. He has refinished bathtub and sink. Philip is our go to guy from now on!

I had the pleasure of hiring Ryan to repair a clogged sewer drain. The day before he came the City of Austin came and stated that the problem was their responsibility and repaired it. When Ryan came he notified me that there was nothing for him to do and refunded me my deposit. He is a very pleasant, respectful and honest person to work with. I shall definitely hire him again and I highly recommend him.

Scott Hannusch of Your Handyman Services is a preferred contractor for repairs and make-readys of properties under my management. I've worked with Scott for the past 6-7 years. His work ethic is exemplary. He is honest, on-time, and is a "Known Quantity" for quality repairs such as painting, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc. Scott is one of the "Good Guys". Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
