Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to fix a fence?

The average cost of fence repairs is around $250, with most homeowners paying anywhere between $200 and $300. Fence repairs have a wide range of potential costs, however, ranging from $50 to as much as $1,443. The cost of your fence repair project depends on multiple factors, including where you live, what type of repair you need, the terrain and the fence materials used.

Contact several fence repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your fence.

Why does my gate sag?

A gate can sag for a number of reasons. One common reason is that the screws holding the hinges in the wood or other post material have come loose, causing gravity to pull the fence down. Another common problem is the gate post’s lack of stability. Posts can become loose and start to lean, or if they are wooden, they can even rot at the point where they meet the ground.

Should I repair or replace my fence?

Fence repair is better for common problems that only affect small areas, such as a broken picket or a shifting fence post. However, there is a rule of thumb to follow: If the repair project requires replacing 20% or more of your fence, it’s probably time to replace the whole fence. The exception to this rule is if the fence is fairly new and just part of it is damaged.

What are some common fence repairs?

The most common fence repairs are aimed at fixing:

  • Missing boards or slats. This is a common problem with wood fences.
  • Fence material corrosion. This occurs on metal fences like chain link and iron.
  • A sagging gate. This could result from a tilting fence post or loose hinges.
  • Post movement. Typically, this is caused by frost, corrosion or water.
  • Stains. Moisture and other elements can stain fencing, which may require a professional to remove it.
  • Warping. Warped, curled, cupped or bent boards are unsightly and less effective and need to be replaced.

If you notice any of the above issues with your fence, reach out to fence repair professionals near you to start getting cost estimates and schedule an appointment.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

How much does it cost to fix a gate?

Gates can be more expensive to fix than other parts of a fence, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that gates are the only moving parts on a fence — hence they have more components that can wear out, as well as friction and the potential for rusting and sagging. Fixing a gate may require a total replacement or simply replacing certain components like hinges. Sometimes, the repair may involve fixing the surrounding fence.

Contact several gate repair professionals near you to get an accurate cost estimate for your gate.

What are some common gate repairs?

The most common gate repairs tend to be associated with a sagging gate. A gate repair professional will check the hinge system. If the hinges have come loose, they will detach the gate, set the hinges in the proper location and reattach everything.

Another common repair is replacing or repairing a sagging fence post by digging a new posthole and/or using a concrete footing.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

Anchor fence replaced an old fence for us. They worked to get started pretty quickly because part of our fence had blown over in a storm. Their prices were in line with other quotes, they did great work, and even came back out a few days after they completed the fence to fix a small area.

I contacted Ascot Fence Co. to install a fence that would enclose my patio and create a safety barrier to prevent pets from falling in my swimming pool. He showed up on time, and his bid was reasonable. He was helpful in creating the design and even went above and beyond by repairing my patio table. He is friendly and the fence is beautiful! I highly recommend Andre and Ascot Fence Co.

Mr Baker told me he would put up a strong sturdy chain link fence, and he also said he would bury it to prevent my dog from getting out. He put up the fence and it was not buried or straight and it was unbelievably wobbly. the top part of the fence with is unstraight and i would never recommend him to anyone. he also measured the gate incorrectly so he rigged it with a pole and some leftover fence, it is visually unappealing. i wish Mr Baker would have just told me that he could not take on this type of job from going from a 4 foot to a 5 foot fence. we are talking to better business bureau.

We hired King of Kings Fence to replace our existing fence and they did a wonderful job!! The new fence is very sturdy and very pretty to look at. The crew was very considerate towards us and our neighbors. They picked up after themselves and removed all trash associated to the old fence. Be prepared to pay with cash or check. Originally I had concerns about these types of payment, however, after speaking to references that also had fence work done by him, they reassured me that I could trust Candido. I'm very glad I took their advice as he did prove to be a very trustworthy person, who does exceptional work at a very good price. I would definitely recommend King of kings to my family and friends!!

We needed a fence for a big yard on a not so big budget... Kasey and Michael of HomeRun Fencing made that possible! From the beginning we knew they were the ones who were going to build our fence. From communication to installation we had zero worries. They answered every question we had promptly and in detail so we were not surprised by anything. They got the permit, called 811, and brought all of the materials. I just had to sit back and watch! When it came to installation, they were there when they said they would be and even finished sooner than I thought was possible. And the final product is better than I could have ever imagined! Just look at that beautiful backyard! If you need a fence, this is the company to choose! Trust me!

The communication with CMC was clear and professional. Eddie Rollins came out to give us a quote on replacing a gate and another section of our fence. While we talked, we mentioned that there was another long section of fencing that needed replacement and would he give us another quote including that too. It turned out that the sq. ft. cost dropped and the quote actually became more in line with our budget! They came out to the house for tear down one day, parked out of the way of our neighbors (we have limited curb space), and came back the next day to finish the fence. Our new cedar fencing is beautiful (I wish it could stay as pretty but this is Texas after all) and we appreciate the good work CMC and Eddie did for us.

Nathan and his team did a fabulous job of building an 8 ft fence in our backyard. We love it! I am very detail-oriented and I had so many questions to ask in preparation for this fence. He answered them all!! He really took the time to explain everything and will give you options. I received several estimates and he had competitive pricing. With his pricing, the excellent customer service, and the trust that we gained brainstorming with him before the job, it was doubt we chose him and his team! It was a great choice and we have received several compliments.

Andre built and installed a black iron type gate. I sent him photos of what I liked, he constructed it, then he and his crew fabricated extra side panels for a gap between the fence and posts. The gates look beautiful. It only took him a week. Thank you.

The job was done in a professional and timely manner. Andre and his team were courteous and efficient. He was very open and honest about the job and didn't try to upsale or add on unnecessary charges. I cannot say enough good things and highly recommend them for any fencing/hardscape needs.

Got more than expected from this group. There pricing was in the middle of the road. I live in a court on the circle, backing up to the park. I have six sides, replaced four, which made this more challenging. I would recommend them and will use them again. I love my new fence and my pups love the dog windows. Thank you FMYates

Whereas Ascot did a great job on the fence, they also were to install box covers over the metal poles to give a polished finish to the unfinished side. This being said, his crew does not understand how to properly install box covers therefore leaving me with a poorly installed bunch of covers! This was discussed with Andre and he agreed the quality was lacking - only reason I didn't rate him lower was his agreeing that his installers need training on box covers as they do not do this very often. The fence itself is well built, with the exception of a couple places where the boards were not raised above ground level leaving the bottom to be placed on the ground therefore leaving the boards to early rot! Price was very good (lowest of 6 bids) and Andre is more than willing to correct deficiencies- only negative is if you are not on site checking progress of work, you may have some minor issues as I had! Would recommend.
