Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do I need an electrician for?

Electricians can help with a variety of electricity-related jobs around your home. If you have a new home, they can install new wiring throughout. Or if you have an old home, they can help with wiring repair.

If your lights keep flickering, circuit breakers seem to be faulty, or outlets don’t have any power, electricians can assist in sorting out the problem. Your house is full of electrical circuits, wiring and sockets that may need repair or updating. These tasks can be safely completed by electricians in your area.

How much does a licensed electrician cost per hour?

An electrician’s average hourly rate is $75, but this price can range from $45-$120, depending on the complexity of the job and the materials needed. The total cost will also vary depending on how long your job takes and if the electrician charges for travel time.

Your location may also be a factor in determining the hourly rate of performing electrical work on your home. To get an accurate estimate of how much electrical work will cost you, contact the best electricians near you to receive free quotes.

How do I hire an electrician?

Go online to find a list of the best electricians in your area. View each individual electrician’s profile and learn more about their services and expertise. Then, read reviews from satisfied customers as well as any issues they may have encountered. This will help you find one with the right experience to work safely in your home.

You should also spend some time researching what qualifications and credentials they have. You might find information about their license on their profile, or you might need to check your local and state government’s website to verify their license.

Once you’ve done a bit of research, ask to receive free estimates from several electricians in your area. Ultimately, hire the most qualified electrician who can complete your project at a reasonable price.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To set up an appointment or consultation with an electrician during the COVID-19 pandemic, ensure that you are performing as much of the process digitally as possible. The best way to begin is by conducting an online search for local electricians. Ask if they can perform consultations over a phone or video call to comply with social distancing mandates. You should also discuss a strategy for how to complete the project during social distancing or whether the project should be completed once the pandemic has ended.

Do electricians do free estimates?

Yes, they do. Whether you’re looking for new electrical work or wiring repair, the electrician should offer you a free estimate.

Go online to find the best electricians near you. After researching and finding a few pros who seem qualified for your job, go ahead and request a quote to find out how much those electricians will charge you.

What questions should I ask an electrician?

Here are a few questions you should ask any electrician you’re considering hiring:

  • Are you licensed or certified? A professional electrician should have this information ready and up to date.
  • Do you have any references? Ask for references to learn about their work history from previous customers. You may be able to look online at reviews, but it’s also good to speak to someone to find out their experience with this electrician.
  • What types of services do you offer? Whether you need repairs or installation services, make sure the electrician can perform the work you need.
  • How long will the job take? This will help you set expectations and rearrange your schedule (if needed).
  • Can you send me free estimates? Request a job quote or estimate. This will help with comparing different electricians. The numbers may vary, but be sure to factor in the experience of each person, as well as the scope of electrical work you’re asking about.

Is it worth it to hire an electrician?

Yes, it's usually worth it to hire an electrician instead of doing the work yourself.

Electrical work can be very dangerous. The pros spend many years working and studying before they become licensed and certified. That knowledge and training can help them work safely and perform the job without harming themselves or your home.

Even a small wiring repair job can be unsafe if not done correctly. Hiring someone that has specialized training on how to do each specific job is the safest choice.

How can I find out if an electrician is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines are available from both local and federal government agencies to clarify which services qualify as essential during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine whether an electrician is considered an essential service provider in your area, check your city or state’s government websites.

For federal guidelines, consult CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 page, which outlines 16 critical infrastructure sectors. But not that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Mr. Trejo was very mindful of COVID-19 precautions when entering our home to install our new stovetop by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. He was very courteous and he verified with us first that we had gotten the specifications for the replacement stovetop correct via our warranty company and a previous licensed electrician consultant, before he installed the cooktop. We had been unable to reach the original electrician by phone and Mr. Trejo was happy to help us out on short notice. He helped me move the old cooktop somewhere out of the way until I could have it hauled away.

After several electricians coming to give us a quote and then never showing up or canceling last minute, Rick Repairs was amazing! Not only did he promptly answer, he was on right on time and completed the job the same day! I simply cannot recommend him enough and have already recommended him to several neighbors. Thank you!

Referred green star to a job we were working on, in order to run wiring for 2 100 gallon commercial boilers. And a recirculating pump at hotel we’ve been servicing all their plumbing needs for many years. The work performed was installed against code, no city permits were pulled. I work closely with 2 other master electricians, who were actually my first call however they were completely booked on other projects. Their work performed was sloppy, literally dangling all over the place instead of taking the extra time and making his work look good they just slapped it together. Where as we took our time to make our craftsmanship look as though we wanted someone 20-30 years from now to walk in and be impressed at the level of detail we took in piping our system in. Wanted to post photos on my website, however the only thing you notice is the spaghetti noodles they call wiring sagging all over the place. It’s a complete eye sore and makes our craftsmanship also look like a poorly installed job as well. I contact the owner Jose and sent him photos, basically using the exact same words describing what I thought of the work. Even expressing the fact that I won’t be able to pass inspection because of how his spaghetti noodles are installed. Jose said he would come out and get it fixed. As a business owner I know how it is, to occasionally have an employee do a less than inferior job which is nowhere near meeting my expectations. However when a customer calls me, and also sends me pictures, the situation get corrected. Also I understand that sometimes emergencies do arise where you may be needed elsewhere. But there’s no excuse for not calling as well as showing up on the job to physically see first hand how horrible the job was done. Green star electric not only doesn’t take pride in the craftsmanship they also do not take complaints with photos to back it up seriously. Reminds me of those silver touch devils who worked for the big box stores come in sell the job, collect the money and run. Save your time and money don’t hire green star electric. There’s more photos of the job they did also
