We wanted tutors who could help our A student be best prepared for the SAT/ACT. A regular class would have wasted much time reviewing material she already knew. Nancy and Lee were able to use our 8 sessions to review common mistakes and test strategies. They even graded her "homework" and communicated with her in between sessions. Their enthusiasm, academic proficiency, professionalism, flexibility and great location (minutes off I-20, gorgeous residential area) made them an excellent choice for accomplishing our goals.

Tutor Revolution is absolutely fantastic!!! I have worked with Ashley and her team for about 5 years. Ashley has helped both of my sons during high school and still today for various reasons—STAAR, ACT, College Writing, Science. The success my boys have received from her academically has been phenomenal but the long-lasting confidence she has instilled in both has been life changing. I even have one child who is extremely dyslexic and after researching many programs and tutors, my son could not have received more outstanding results especially with standardized tests and STAAR! As a parent, Ashley has always valued and respected my input as well as willing to try new things and make adjustments for what is best for my sons’ learning. Tutor Revolution is the best of the best with making a difference and is by far the best for children.

Keith is the best tutor anyone could ever ask for. He is so understanding and considerate and really genuinely wants you to do well in your course and in life. If I was late to our tutor session at my house he would sit in his car and wait for me. He would always be so pleasant and kind. Every course he has taught me in college and highschool, I have gotten an A in. He shows you that you can do it and he gives you the confidence by encouraging you. I would have never thought that I would be able to do math like I am now and it's all because of Keith. He really made me realize that I can do anything and that I can do very difficult math. With Keith you will be able to go above and beyond your goals and he will be right there with you telling you that you can do it. I really am blessed to have him in my life and he is the best tutor I have ever had. Because of him my GPA is amazing and I am not even worried about the classes he tutors me in even though they are very difficult classes. He is the best tutor you will ever find! Hands down! -Sam McCarthy

"A patient, intuitive and smart tutor who really connects with me" Sandeep is an expert. He exceeded my expectations. If you want the best and if you want the best results, go with Sandeep. Sandeep is an excellent tutor. He was extremely thorough and quickly found my weaknesses. he was extremely valuable when he focused on my weak points and we worked together to improve them. He also helped me write, edit and proofread my college applications, essays, resume and cover letter. I had a wonderful experience with Sandeep. I really enjoyed my sessions with him. He is brilliant and he connected with and engaged me and truly made SAT prep fun and positive for me. I was also looking for someone to help me write my personal statement for my college apps and to polish up my cover letter and resume. I was looking for someone with excellent writing skills. Sandeep knows how to how to present my strengths in my essays and applications. I also worked with Sandeep remotely for a while (phone, emails & fax) and that saved a lot of time. Since Sandeep's rate is on the higher side, I did not work with him initially, but after working with him, I know he's totally worth it. Having worked with other tutors in the past, I can say that Sandeep is the tutor and writer you need if you are looking for the best. Don't wait.

Dr. Fikar is extremely knowledgeable of the SAT and Subject tests, quite detailed with his approach and study materials, and patient with his teaching. While my son has yet to take the exam, I feel confident with Dr. Fikar guiding him toward the test date. Yes, he is expensive, but I believe the sessions will be well worth it. Highly recommended.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

  • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
  • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
  • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
  • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
