Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Rona was truly a great trainer. I needed a trainer for my rescue dog who is shy and easily scared. I've had dogs before and were able to train them, but this one I had no idea what to do. I needed a way to let my dog know that she can trust me. Without me saying this, Rona taught me and my boyfriend a way to gain our puppy's trust and to build our relationship. It's been a couple of days now and the trick totally works! Even when we go out now our dog would look at us instead of panning left and right. What I truly appreciate from Rona's training is that she taught us just enough for us to get started on the dog training. I wasn't overwhelmed with information and the tricks she taught us were useful ones for this stage of the dog's training. I think dog trainers need to realize that as much as they are training the dogs, their main task is to train the humans on how to train their own dogs, and that's exactly what Rona did. Thank you Rona, Lucy is doing a lot better (still problems here and there but getting better)!

Rona has great techniques for owners to train their dogs. Just a couple of lessons in my home and both me and my dog have the tools to keep training on our own.

Personal, in-home private lessons. Stephanie started evaluating and training the second she walked in the door and within 1 hour had my dog already behaving better. She met all my training needs and I am very pleased with how she taught us to train our dog. I would highly recommend her to anyone who needs dog training.

Rona was very insightful and gave very helpful guidance on house training our dog. We are just starting to practice the games and training exercises Rona suggested. Hoping this helps with containing our overly friendly dog from jumping up on our house guests!

I was not able to get any kind of consultation prior to hiring Rona. Had I been able to speak with her before our training session, I would have been able to tell we would not be a good fit. Rona is very good with dogs, but her approach with me was fairly negative. Before she did any training with my dog, she had already criticized me for how many times I feed my dog (2x per day, as AKC recommends), what I feed my dog (Nulo, which, after reading the actual ingredients she said was a good choice), and how I exercise my dog (taking her to the park to walk at her leisure). She spent a good portion of our session trying to teach my dog to sit without saying “Sit,” because she does not believe in teaching dogs command words. This is the one thing I had already taught my dog and not the issue I needed addressed. Though I did go into detail about reasons for wanting training for my dog, Rona did not address the issues I am having. I realize that there are stages of training, but the guidance she gave me only reinforced things that my dog was already mastering prior to the training and did not help me with the actual issues I am facing.

Rona is very informative, and very experienced in dog training. Not only did she give us a lot of information on how to right our dogs fear driven behaviors, she taught US how to be more assertive leaders for our dog to follow. Thank you

Basic dog training (jumping on me, eye contact) as well as specific training for being around children. Rona gave me 3 exercises to do with excellent explanations as well as advice on the crate, food, treats, dog behavior in general, you name it! Tons of information. I can't wait for our next session:) You will get your money's worth plus some!

Rona is extremely knowledgeable in training and knows how to read my dog from the time I opened the front door! She’s kind, responsive and patient. She is very punctual and has all the training tools on hand when she comes for the training. I’ve learned a lot in just the few lessons.

I hired Roman's Holistic K9 Training for some help with specific behavior problems with my Great Dane. What Roman provided far exceeded my expectations. My dog is calmer and better behaved.... and my relationship with my dog has been enriched as a result of this training. I highly recommend Roman to anyone wanting to better understand and motivate their canine companion.

My dog Panda had extreme reactivity to anything that moved. We started seeing signs of a problem when he was about 4 months old. At 5 months, he ran to and bit our sweet and understanding neighbor with no provocation. We realized that we had a serious problem developing. Over the course of the next 7 months, we went through several pure positive trainers and training methods. This works for many dogs, but for Panda's extreme anxiety, it did not. He continued to escalate and when he turned 1, I broke down in tears as I was losing this boy by degrees. We went through several trainers, hundreds of training hours (with trainers and personally), and thousands of dollars trying to help him. It was so bad, I even considered having his teeth removed (I know, crazy). Almost every trainer at that point had said we either needed to put him down or that "he is just a dog that needs to be locked up when people are around and kept at home away from the public." Thats like going to an Oncologist and having them say "Well you have cancer, so go home as there is nothing we can do". I put out a plea on this site and DeepWaterK9 answered my message. This has changed our lives. Panda leads a full life. We can run off leash, we can enter crowded areas, we can pass playgrounds and dog parks without issue. I advocate for these trainers fiercely because they saved our beloved dog and gave us the training and tools to share a wonderful full life with Panda. Without them, we were in unbelievable despair. Many dogs like Panda are put down or relinquished to shelters with no positive future in sight. It simply does not have to be. If you have a troubled dog, you need to contact these trainers immediately. It will be the best decision imaginable.

Rona was awesome. She helped us learn how to train our very energetic one-year-old lab puppy. I was amazed how quickly our dog responded to Rona. Almost immediately I saw real learning going on! Rona is a very kind trainer that makes sure the dog and the owner understand the concepts before she moves on. I HIGHLY recommend her!

I had a great experience with Rona! As a first time dog owner, there are many questions I have about training my German Shepherd. Rona helped by giving me simple exercises to practice with my dog to improve confidence, eye contact and obedience.

Rona is the right dog trainer for us! She identifies and has compassion for what your pet is trying to tell us. She has already made excellent suggestions and we have scheduled a second visit. Her philosophy is not about bending your dog to the master's will, it is more about helping the dog on a pathway to a manageable lifestyle and a happy home. YEA!

Rona was great! She zeroed in on our dogs issues immediately and taught us some exercises to do, walked us through them, and gave us a plan of action. We really learned a lot of why our dog was behaving this way which was really important in tackling her issues. I highly reccommned Good Dog Training.
