Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Are bathroom remodels worth it?

Remodeling your bathroom can lead to high personal satisfaction, as perhaps even a return on your investment when it comes time to sell your home. When you replace old and worn out surfaces with high-quality materials, it is almost guaranteed to improve the look and functionality of that space. A bathroom renovation can also improve your home’s curb appeal to future buyers and boost its overall value.

To determine if this project is worth the cost, start by getting free estimates from the best bathroom remodelers near you. And if you plan on selling your home, consult with your real estate expert to identify which remodeling projects you should prioritize.

Do I need a general contractor for a bathroom remodel?

For a small bathroom remodel, you may not need a general contractor. For example, if you simply need some plumbing or electrical work done in your bathroom, hiring a plumber or electrician should be sufficient.

However, if you’re tackling a large-scale remodel, a general contractor can coordinate a team of designers, painters and other specialty contractors to get the job done. Typically, the rule of thumb is that you should hire a general contractor if your project is large enough to require a building permit.

Reach out the best bathroom remodelers near you to start planning your project, assemble a team and get cost estimates.

What should I ask a bathroom remodeler before hiring?

It’s important to ensure that you and the contractor are on the same page before any work begins, so don’t be afraid to ask potential bathroom remodelers plenty of questions.

Start by reading the contractor’s reviews online. Ask to see examples of their past work — specifically, work that is similar to yours. If you need the bathroom remodel done by a certain date, ask the contractor if they will be able to complete the work by your deadline. And you should always ask how they handle payments.

Here are some examples of questions you can ask:

  • What materials do you recommend for my budget and overall vision?
  • How much are the materials and labor? What will my final cost be?
  • Do you have the proper license and insurance?
  • Can I see photos of past bathroom remodels you’ve worked on?
  • How long will it take to complete the remodel?
  • How do you handle payments?

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling varies greatly. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps.

The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost. Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges.

Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures. Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.

How can I find out if a general contractor is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To find out whether a general contractor is considered essential in your area during the current coronavirus pandemic, visit your city or state’s government website, which will have information on essential services.

Find information on national recommendations by visiting CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

How much does a shower remodel cost?

If you don’t need foundational work (like a new shower pan) but want a tile makeover in your shower, the average national cost for tiling a shower is $3,875. The average cost for bathroom tile is $25 per square foot for installation; at that rate, a standard tub and shower combo tile job with walls that are roughly 6 feet to 8 feet high may have tile installation costs that average $2,000. If all your bathroom really needs is a new shower door, door installation averages $250-$510.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a general contractor when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a general contractor, avoid any physical contact, don’t shake hands, keep 6 feet of distance between you and the pro and sanitize all involved surfaces. Also, use digital platforms to communicate and make payments.

We could not have been more pleased with Preferred Quality. David and his crew did a FANTASTIC job on our bathroom remodel. We've had a lot of renovation projects done on our house over the years, and this is the first time a contractor has shown up on time, every day, worked a full day, and didn't farm the job out to other random workers. Scheduling was very easy, and the price was right in line with what we wanted to pay. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again for future remodeling projects. We had zero problems, and the end result was a beautiful bathroom!

Leo and his team helped remodel my master bathroom. They worked quickly to get things scheduled and coordinated, and were flexible when we hit some speed bumps due to shipping delays. Leo was responsive and in communication through each step of the process.

Felipe was very attentive and informative about the job that was to be done concerning the remodel of my upstairs bathroom. He explained what was to be done and the time and the order this would be accomplished. His men were very polite and went about their work. They always cleaned up the area when they left for the day. I know that Jacob, Mark, Nemesio and Beto (and Felipe, too) got so tired of having to go up and down the stairs! I know that I do. The guys did an awesome job and I now have a beautiful bathroom. I highly recommend US Construction & Remodeling. Thank you, Felipe. I will post a picture after I have finished decorating.

I hired F & B Remodeling to update my family bathroom. I am pregnant with my second child and we desperately needed our bathroom to be expanded to accommodate our growing family. F&B held our hand the entire process. They advised us on what the most economic choices would be based on our budget and gave us creative suggestions to work within the space we have. They were great at communicating and very professional.

We are truly happy and satisfied contracting Durako Plumbing for our complete master and guest room bathroom remodel. Our family certainly appreciates the top-notch quality of all materials utilised on our projects, the amazing workmanship on tile and glassworks and the fair pricing for this project. Durako Plumbing (Owner: Jaycer) is very meticulous with his insured plumbing workmanship; equally important, Jaycer is great at finding qualified sub-contractors to do the tile, painting and glasswork. Special recognition to Ruben Guerrero - (owner of SignatureGlass company) - he did an amazing glass work with my guest bathroom, privacy window with rain effects and master custom 93” wide sliding glass door! I’ll highly recommend Durako plumbing for your upcoming plumbing and complete bathroom remodels projects… Jaycer will beat anyone on the Austin market with high quality and fair pricing. Felipe was very easy and pleasant to work with. His work was exceptional and he is a perfectionist. It can be very difficult finding a contractor, let alone one that is honest and doesn’t cut corners. I am so pleased with the guest bathroom remodel, it looks incredible. I was so happy with Felipe’s work that I’ve hired him for another project.

We hired Jaycer and his crew to completely remodel all 3 of our bathrooms. It was a large project that took 2 months to complete. The project included demoing the old bathrooms, plumbing, framing new walls and installing a closet, moving a toilet location, installing vanities, texture, painting, baseboards, electrical, and much more. Jaycer and his crew were excellent. He was prompt, professional, and very responsive throughout the process. The thing I appreciated most about Jaycer is that he genuinely cares about doing a great job and making sure his customer is satisfied. I got bids from several other contractors for this job, and I’ve dealt with many different contractors for projects of varying size and scale over the years. Jaycer is honestly one of the best I’ve worked with. I’d hire him again without hesitation.

I recently used CTX homeworks on my bathroom remodel in Austin. They gave a quick and fair quote. They were here on time everyday, and they finished a day ahead of schedule. They arranged for a final inspection and walked through with us. I like the fact that they were clean cut, and respectable. I also liked that they did not upcharge me for materials! It was nice to have a contractor do everything they said they would do. Our last experience was terrible, but Scott and Sid made us feel confident in their abilities. I like that they gave me a progress report at the end of every day. Communication is key, and they do not lack in that department. The only issue I had with this whole process was that Home Depot didn't have my fixtures, and Scott drove to the Bastrop store late on Friday to pick them up! If you need a remodel and you're not using these guys you are making a mistake!

We hired Felipe to help us remodel our bathroom. We wanted to remove the tub unit and install a standing shower. We hired Felipe based on his sheer honesty about the cost of the project as well as his ability to begin the project as soon as possible. He charged us only for the labor of removing the tub unit (and hauling the pieces away), and the installation of the new shower, including the tiling. All of the expenses came out of our pocket, so we purchased the tile and door on our own time. Any of the other materials needed (concrete, siding, grout, etc) Felipe purchased and billed us for later. He showed us every single receipt for anything he bought at the time of reimbursement. It was all at retail prices (he bought everything from Home Depot). He also picked up the door from Home Depot for us, as it was unable to fit in our car, at no extra cost. At the end of each day he told me exactly what he and his son (the only people working the job) did and exactly what his plans were for the next day. If there was going to be a delay of any kind, he let us know right away and made it known that it was not going to change the price that we agreed upon at the beginning of the project at all. If you are having any bathroom work done in your home, I HIGHLY recommend this man. We are extremely satisfied with the completed project and the entire process. We will definitely be hiring Felipe in the future should we want to remodel our second bathroom.

Pat and Lela did a great job with our bathroom model. Given it was an older house, some challenges came up, but they were able to take care of everything with ease. At times I was nervous, but Pat made everything look great. The windows I purchased were too big (too deep), but Pat was able to put them in so you can't even tell. They look great. I also loved that they did all of the work themselves. There weren't any subcontractors involved. It was comforting having the same people coming by every day instead of different people every day. Our bathroom remodel was pretty extensive. They knocked down a wall and rebuilt a half wall, re-ran the electrical and plumbing, tiled and even painted Everything looked great and we were very pleased with the work. I've never worked with someone who cared more about making sure I was happy with the product.

We had Leo come for bathroom remodeling. We ended up doing more projects. Upon initial consultation I found Leo to be meticulous man and no others were that attentive to details. Therefore we hired him to do the work. The whole process took two months, during which he was always responsive and responsible. Being a big project, mishaps are almost inevitable, but the way Leo handles incidents quickly and responsively left us a good impression. We trust that Leo can do a great job for us in the future, and for others. And his merits will help his company thrive in this industry.

SCAM! BEWARE!! Scotty very quickly showed up to measure and was also prompt to collect my %50 down payment to get started on bathroom remodel. After deposit was provided I was consistently trying to chase him down. He promised a start date, however after days of no show and multiple excuses why he couldn’t show up as he promised I’m out a deposit and have nothing to show for it. Last I spoke to Scotty he was “on his way directly to my house and an hour away” and that was 24 hrs ago. Now taking appropriate steps to try to get my deposit back from someone who is untrustworthy. Feeling scammed and lied to…….no excuse for this!

If you are looking for someone to completely transform your space, you are here. My wife and I had 3 other contractors come to our home to let us know what was possible and give us a bid. A couple were ho-hum, and the 3rd was very good, with a great portfolio and he gave as a great idea of how he could remodel the space. As a result I almost cancelled my appointment with Chase. Thank GOODNESS I didn't! Chase came in and IMMEDIATELY started giving me a vision of what our space COULD BE, and not simply how the seemingly small space could be reworked. He discussed endless possibilities including taking down walls, reconfiguring closets, adding much needed ventiliation, bringing the rooms up to code, moving plumbing lines -- I was absolutely blown away by his knowledge -- but even moreso by his passion. He comes from a family of builders and it shows! These were all things I was hoping for, but thought impossible from my discussions with the other contractors. It was either beyond their skill set or beyond the level and quality of work that they were willing to provide. I'm not saying that to put any of the other contractors down, but to heap praise on Chase Von Ach. This young man is a master builder and contractor with thge eye of a top designer. He literally transformed our poorly designed, outdated and cramped 1983 bathroom and spacious but dated master bedroom, complete with popcorn ceiling, into a space that is more reminiscent of something I've heard referred to as house porn. He built us custom, one of a kind barn door style doors for the master bathroom and closet -- along with matching wood on the box window sill in the bathroom. He then built us a low profile matching piece beneath the television that used reclaimed wood from my wife's family's barn built in the 1800s! We came in with high hopes, and Chase then continually exceeded them. I'll post the pics because my words will never do it justice. 1st pic is the only pic of the old ugly bathroom lol … everything else is house porn 😉 enjoy!!! p.s. we are planning to completely remodel our living room / stairs with Chase next…fair warning - you won’t be able to stop at just one or two rooms either!

It is hard to find a good, reliable contractor especially when you are planning to remodel the master bathroom in the house where you expect to stay for the next 15 years. We looked at different websites (Yelp, Angie's list etc...) and met and talked to more than 10 contractors but at the end, there was something that was missing or wrong (too expensive, too long to reply to email, too much subcontracting etc...) until we met Pat. We initially scheduled an appointment at 8:00 am and he was right on time, explained us clearly the different difficulties that we may have and provided us with an estimate of amount of time to complete the work (6 weeks). Between our first meeting and the beginning of the work Pat provided us a detailed schedule of the work he is planning to do and was frequently sending us an update of the status of the job that he was doing. He wasn't the cheapest, but we really appreciated the way he was communicating with us for our project. He stopped by two more times to check with us some details that we were worrying about before the beginning of the work. It was also an occasion for us to meet his wife Leyla. At the end, we didn't regret our decision to hire Pat. During the whole time of the project, Pat was always on time, protecting our hardwood floor at the beginning of the day and cleaning it at the end of the day. During the 6 weeks of the project, Pat was always keeping us up to date with the progress of the work and was sending us pictures while we were working. He was perfectly on time and was doing a very good job taking care of all small details. We had some delays but it was only related to other companies that we worked with (countertop, cabinets etc...) and Pat was always here to provide us feedback and recommendation based on his experience. We also appreciated that Pat was dedicated 100% of the remodeling project without subcontracting the work. He was doing a perfect team work with his wife and we really appreciated his dedication and the quality of his work. Another big advantage is that Pat and Leyla were super friendly with our dog and didn't mind having him at home while they were working. When the project was done, Pat came couple of times to see if everything works well. We will be working with Pat and Leyla on our future projects !!
