I was planking a surprise birthday party for my husband and a friend recommended Chris for bar tending services. Chris was very helpful right from the beginning. I did not have much experience with setting up a cocktail party and Chris helped with narrowing down the options and bringing everything that was needed on the day of the party. All the guests enjoyed the drinks and his cheerful personality. I would definitely recommend Chris.

The food was very good and plentiful, everything was on time and clean-up left nothing for us to do. Karen knows how to cater a great party, her employees are very nice yet need a bit more training in bartending and catering. Karen has the patience to work with them.

My husband and I were looking for a kind, friendly and personable bartender. After the reading the reviews for Santisi Catering, we decided to book and I am glad that we did. Our Bartender name was Kimberly(same as mine) and I said to myself " we have the same name so I know she will be wonderful". Kim was everything that we wanted in a bartender. I couldn't believe that she went into help mode from the moment she walked in the door, quickly saying "what do you need me to do" and " I will do it for you". We are already lookin forward to doing business again with Santisi Catering. Highly recommended.

Holiday Sit-down dinner for 14. Prime rib, shrimp cocktail, tossed salad, twice baked potatoes, green beans with silvered almonds, rolls and mini strawberry shortcake. Food was delicious, a little slow as to not being accustomed to my kitchen, not knowing where things were and not asking but with this large of dinner party it was hard for caterers to get my attention. Caterers only big problem was not leaving early enough (after we discussed it) to get through the extremely heavy traffic and arrive on time which threw dinner off from scheduled time. Since everyone attending were friends, it just worked out that we had more time to talk but it caused the caterers to cook and reheat dinner items because they had gotten cold waiting in traffic getting here. It ended up working out well, a good time was had by one and all and as I early mentioned, the food was delicious- far above what we had expected. We will highly recommend Lunas catering and also will use them again in any future catering needs.

Laura, owner of Bittersweet Cakes and Catering, provided catering services for our wedding in July. We found Laura to be fabulous! She was professional with a friendly touch. She made recommendations that would suit a summer wedding. We felt at ease with all correspondence with her. When we had any questions, they were answered quickly and with great knowledge of what would go well with our reception menu. Her daughter, Jamie, did a wonderful job organizing the reception dinner. Jamie was also very polite to our guests by explaining dishes and greeting them with smiles. It has been a couple of months since our wedding and guests continue to rave about how good the food was. Laura also provided the cakes for our wedding. We loved our cakes! The personalized cake decorations were awesome and the flavors were delicious!

On the day of the event, Kat was prompt, professional and extremely helpful. We received nothing but compliments from guests about the bar tending. We would whole heartedly recommend Kat to anyone needing bar tending services

This was awesome. We love dinner parties, but this year we've just had no time. And even when we did have time, we were wiped after the week, and couldn't face the cleaning, cooking, and cleaning again (dishes -- like a hangover without the fun drunk part beforehand). We decided to splurge and try a catering/chef service. We chose Chef Bonnie and were very pleased. Communication via email and phone was promptly responded to. She handled the somewhat complex dietary issues of some of our guests without batting an eyelash. She noted our requests and confirmed them, also dealing with my questions and minor changes perfectly. The day of the dinner she and her assistant arrived with everything they needed to cook an awesome meal. All we had to do was occasionally point out where some of our serving dishes and kitchen items were. When our guests arrived we were able to relax and enjoy a conversation for hours while Bonnie and her assistant dealt with all the food, served us, and then CLEANED UP ALMOST EVERYTHING. They even labeled and stored the leftovers in our fridge! Have I mentioned the food was delicious? It was! Rounding it all out, I felt we got good value for our money. I would not call it "inexpensive" but two people working hard for 6 hours (skilled labor at that), plus the prep time beforehand, and all supplies except the wine, salt and pepper? AND the ease of mind? Bargain. Oh yeah, almost forgot: She was very patient with our dogs, who spent most of their time under her feet until we finally put them away. Give her a try! I think you'll be pleased!

I hired Bar Divas for our event a few weeks ago. Jacqueline was great in assisting me with the coordination leading up to the event, and was very accommodating with all of my last minute changes. Diana and Melanie were great on the day of the event; they showed up on time, super professional, friendly, and personable. The setup of the bar, the service, and quality was everything we could have asked for. I would def hire them again.

V and her team are incredible! Catering is one of the most expensive parts of a wedding, but she gave us a great deal for the value of food and quantity of people. I was so worried about not having enough food, V assured me that this would not be one of those weddings! She was right. We had so much food leftover that my family is probably still eating off of, lol. The crab-stuffed mushroom caps (that I unfortunately didn’t get to try) were a hit! As well as the macaroni 😍 Choose V! She won’t disappoint.

We hired Amanda for a cocktail party at our house with 20-30 guests. Amanda was a huge help from the beginning. She provided me with a list of everything I would need for a great party. She also came to the table with some ideas for a signature cocktail and did all the prep for a rosemary syrup that we needed before coming to our house. From the moment she arrived, Amanda was a pro, setting up the bar so that guests could easily choose a drink and see what was available. The signature cocktail was a HUGE hit (Note: if you do this, buy plenty of booze to ensure demand is met). Amanda was engaging and was attentive throughout the night - I received several compliments and 2 days later, one of our guests reached out to get her contact info to hire her. Best of all she helped clean and tidy before she left. I'm already planning on hiring her for next year.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.
