Craig came to my house to install some in-wall speaker cable that I was unable to do myself. It was a very tricky job since I live in an older home and my attic space is limited. Craig analyzed the job and determined it wasn't going to be simple. After a few attempts, Craig was able to come up with an extremely creative way to tackle the job and he completely surpassed my expectations. After spending considerable more time than I'm sure he thought he would on the job, Craig stuck to his initial quote for the work. That's what I call integrity. I would highly recommend Craig for any work that he lists on his profile and I will use him again for anything I need. Thanks, Craig!

Dale was wonderful! I had a patio set and and entertainment unit that needed to be assembled and he stuck with the job until it was finished (which was fabulous since the manufacturer forgot to include the hardware for the tv unit and I had to make a Home Depot run to get parts). Friendly, professional and a really nice guy. I will be using him again soon for a lighting project. :)

Josh's project was a nine piece build from IKEA. He put in eight hours of work over two days. My living and dining room look phenomenal. We had such a great experience that we are already agreed to schedule another job. I would recommend him to anyone in need of a build project.

BJ was fantastic! He responded promptly and gave me a fair quote for putting together a twin bed and dresser from Ikea. He was also punctual and arrived as promised. He was meticulous and took his time to make sure he did a good job. I felt confident seeing the way he put the pieces together and when he was done with all the work, it was sturdy and firm. He's great and highly recommended.

William was great to work with and he has a very hardworking crew. We worked together on a plan to add hardscape to my backyard and he delivered a great final product. This project utilized a lot of different types of materials and also required major tree trimming. Project was completed in less than three days to plan and even clean up was exceptional. I already have a few other projects in mind for William!

Ricardo came out twice before the project started to make sure he understood my vision for the yard. He also went out of his way to find exactly the plants I was looking for. His crew was friendly and professional. He originally hired a 3rd party carpenter to build some garden boxes for the project, but when this guy did a terrible job, he started from scratch with his own crew and built those boxes right. Ricardo's prices were not cheap, but they were fair for the top quality job his crew does. His crew came back the week after to fix a bunch of sprinklers to fix dry spots in the design. They stand behind their work 100%.

I have used The Fence Rescuer on several occasions and I will never have to look up another handyman/fix it service ever again. The first time was actually a complete face-lift inside my home before we moved in. Frank and his crew worked on several different aspects of my home, from building me a new gate to enclose my backyard, to sealing our attic, and even re-plumbing the back bathroom so it could accommodate my washer and dryer, and on top of it all they even finished the job early. The best part about the experience was the customer service, it was just my mother and I moving into the home, and all of the guys on the crew were not only polite but respectful, and that made us both feel very comfortable. It is truly hard to find trustworthy people that also do such quality work, I know this is a phone number I will be holding onto for sure!!

We hired Eric and his team for our 10'x20' concrete patio addition/pergola, they did a fantastic job. We met with a few contractors prior to Eric coming out, once he was able to meet with us, he was able to show his expertise and really made us feel comfortable. For our project, we told Eric that we wanted to get a pergola with the idea of getting a outdoor fireplace in the future. He did a great job to explaining the structural implications of the fireplace and how we can prepare for it now. Eric said that it would take about a week to get everything completed, unfortunately weather did not allow that, but his team was more than willing to make sure that the project was still completed in an ideal time. His team was very polite, easy to work with and even did a great job of keeping the yard/patio clean when they were completed. Needless to say, we will definitely be going with Eric and his team again for our fireplace and possible outdoor landscaping. If you are looking for a very respective contractor/team, you will want to go with this team. Thanks again for working with us to make sure that we got exactly what we needed.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
