Terry worked me into his busy schedule and came out for what we thought was a simple repair. Before leaving, Terry noticed that we recently added an addition to our patio and that our sprinklers were not watering part of the yard. Furthermore, after testing our system, we learned that the patio guys did not properly cap the heads under the patio. Terry spent most of the trying to find the pipes under the patio, bypassing the heads underneath and adding new heads. Due to the severity of water leaking under our patio, near the foundation, he cleared his schedule to make sure the job got done before the house was damaged. Terry was very positive and energetic. He explained what he was doing each step along the way. While he was priced a little high, I feel that Terry delivered outstanding service and quality work. Several days after the repair I noticed the problem and called Terry to leave a voicemail. Terry immediately called me back a scheduled a time to promptly come address the issue. It nice to see someone who takes pride in their work and stands behind it. It will use Terry for all my sprinkler needs and recommend him.

They did an impeccable job with the mowing and leaf clearing. I will be keeping them to mow my lawn weekly. The only complaint and this is partly my fault is that they cut down my gardening bed in my backyard. I had 2 hop plants growing there. Hopefully the plants can recover. That's my reason for the 4 star rating.

David was great. We worked together to decide what to do with the back yard. He knew what would look good and what plants would be good in different areas of the yard. Both a landscaper and knowledgeable in plants was just wonderful. We changed the plan a few times and he was very flexible in design and timeframe to get it done. I can highly recommend him.

Sants landscaping laid some fresh bermuda sod, five trees, mulch and river rock. Planted around 20 plants so basically an entire landscape backyard project. It looks beautiful and he is very reasonable on pricing for this area. I would certainly call him again and plan on using him on all future projects.

I am so happy I went with Crest for my tree trimming/removal project. They responded same-day to my request and Mr. Calkins was quick to respond to my messages. He was able to give me a very reasonable quote over the phone with pictures. He was initially able to do my project same day but I answered too late. However, he was still able to get me in on Monday (I requested on Thursday) and him and his team did a beautiful job. They also removed and hauled away this massive, overgrown plant I wasn't able to afford doing due to budgeting, free of cost! Payment was easy and overall, I am very satisfied with their work. I would recommend their services to anyone. Detailed work: Removed 20 ft tall free w/ stump grind, stump grind and ground leveling, large free trim and raise.

Gracie at Green Landscaping was great to work with. She provided me with a design complete with the type of plants she recommended. She took the time to listen to what I wanted. Once the project started, she was very responsive and kept me up-to-date on what would be done and when. She’s not typical landscaping company that doesn’t return calls or texts. The work was completed timely and to our specifications and we are very happy. They were very good about cleaning up each day after their work. I highly recommend Green Landscaping.

Kody was on time, professional, knowledgeable and friendly. He identified the issues quickly and quoted me a fair price for the work. While he was making the repairs, my water valve broke. Kody was honest and agreed to discount the cost of the valve. I will recommend Texas Best to all my friends, neighbors and family.

Mosaia and his crew did a large backyard renovation for me. This job was done in a couple phases over about a month. They did a great job. Communication was excellent throughout the entire project. His prices are very fair. Here is a list of the things they did. Built a boulder retaining wall about 4ft tall by 80ft long. It turned out great. They also tore down the old wall of railroad ties. They took care of the permit and dealing with the city. It went pretty smooth Installed a new fence and gate on top of the wall. Looks great. They dug in drainage lines to stop the erosion in my back yard. Cut out a strip of the patio and installed some new drains to stop flooding. Installed OK milsap stone around all the back yard patio Installed a stone staircase thru the wall. It looks really good They moved the irrigation lines and fixed the broken ones Installed a flagstone path leading to the stairs Installed a new concrete pad for our pool pump and filter Built two flower gardens and filed them with potting soil. Laid new sod in the whole back yard. Mosaia handled all the procurement of the needed items. Everything from stones, concrete, wood, you name it, they took care of it. I will be having him do some more work on our yard soon. Their stone work is great.

In the past, I have had many unpleasant experiences with irrigation companies, always charging too much, not knowing how to do repairs with the stations functioning or even coming on; putting on the wrong kind of heads & not making all the needed adjustments before leaving. Not so with Jake with Harrington; He was so polite and had a great attitude with his abilities. He was super athletic, running all around my almost one-acre lot to flag issues with the heads & valves, stations. He did all the repairs in 3 hours time! In the past I had guys taking the whole day & even having to come back because they were not able to do all the adjustments/repairs in 1 day. Jake was honest & such a hard worker! I only wish there were more contractors who had his abilities & attitude; that is so hard to find these days. (after hiring contractors for our home remodeling for the past year!) so many bad ones out there! This is my first time using Thumbtack & the experience was great!

Ricardo came out twice before the project started to make sure he understood my vision for the yard. He also went out of his way to find exactly the plants I was looking for. His crew was friendly and professional. He originally hired a 3rd party carpenter to build some garden boxes for the project, but when this guy did a terrible job, he started from scratch with his own crew and built those boxes right. Ricardo's prices were not cheap, but they were fair for the top quality job his crew does. His crew came back the week after to fix a bunch of sprinklers to fix dry spots in the design. They stand behind their work 100%.

I hired Jose Vasquez to plant a tree for me; he looked at the site, gave me a price, I agreed, he got his shovel & went to work immediately. Beautiful job and Happy Tree. Jose is a jewel: he even emptied 3 bags of potting soil for me into large pots. I will hire again! Thank you, Jose.

Eric was very quick to respond to my request. I had a fairly large project to clear and clear out 4 different flower beds. I needed design, plants replaced and a trench in the front to keep future grass creep. I also needed 3 large beds in the back yard cleared out and new plants and soil build up. Eric came to the house within a day and provided a professional proposal in a very short period of time. He is a great listener and also provides great "plant consulting" which is VERY helpful! The work that he and his team did was outstanding! I would highly recommend his company!

We hired Sunwest Irrigation to install a new controller box and determine why our pressure was low in certain areas. Brian came out within three days of our initial contact and completed the work on the same day. He is friendly, courteous and professional. He replaced our original 1985 controller with a new one that is so easy to use and replaced several sprinkler heads. He worked well after a 'normal' quitting time to finish our job. We will certainly hire him again.

Hired them to remove a tree and some shrubs and gave me a fair price. They showed up on time and worked really fast. They were done before the time he said it would take. Cleaned up after them selves. Will be calling them to do more tree trimming.

Backyard pond with lots of landscape and fence repair project. Due to conflicting schedules, Bret allowed me to send him video of my backyard for the quote. This worked wonderfully as I recored, I talked him through what I wanted. Really saved time and much better than leaving work early for a consult! We then spoke and he gave me a fair quote. My yard looks amazing....and I'm very picky! He was very knowledgeable about all the different plants I had and knew how to treat them all. He also trimmed my front bushes just because it needed it. Glad I found him as I will keep his info for the next yard project. Highly recommend!!

Mr. Perez has provided my lawn care for two years. He does a good job and does special tasks when asked (spread grass seeds, planted bushes, trimmed tree leaves and other lawn care tasks). His prices are reasonable and he doesn’t try to take advantage.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
