In the last couple of days prior to closing on two properties the one we were selling and purchasing literally within 24 hours of each other our source for disassembly, move and reassembly became unavailable. So I googled and discovered Thumbtack. Jason Dodds owner Ballistick Billiards responded literally within a couple of minutes of my request. When I saw the price I was leary because I had paid $700 the previous time I'd had it set up. Wow did I get taken by a family friend. Jason and Ballistick came out disassembled offered to store the table so movers wouldn't damage for an additional fee although we opted not to do that even with that add on service it still would have only been $300-$325. Once we moved in to our new house they worked with our schedule and were extremely accommodating and reset the table it's perfect. I've saved Jason Dodds number in my phone to personally recommend. I'm in the restaurant industry and I recognize impeccable customer service, I would highly recommend Ballistick Billiards for your pool table assembly, move and reassembly, what a great value. Movers were very friendly, helpful, and courteous. My only issue is that some boxes ended up in storage that were supposed to be left at my new house.

The price of these movers is just too good to pass up. They moved quickly and they were super friendly. The only qualm I have is that they pacted things a bit poorly (i.e.: my desktop was placed upside down leaving the top covered in scratches) and somehow my mattress was extremely dirty. But overall I'm pleased. Just supervise wisely!

Movers arrived early, were very friendly and profesional. The rate charged was much more reasonable than some of the other quotes I received. Moved my stuff up two flights of stairs no problem. I will definitely give these guys my business again.

I hired a 3 man crew to move my furniture from a 2 bedroom on the 3rd floor, to a 2 bedroom on the 2nd floor. The men were really nice. They were able to handle all of my requests no problem. They took apart my bed, and assembled it at my new apartment. They also hooked up my washer and dryer. I have used various moving companies in my life. I moved each year during college, and have moved multiple times since then. These have been the best movers so far. I have had others that complained about my furniture or that the apartment was not on the first floor (even though this information was given when first scheduling the move). I have ones that did not seem to care about the condition of the objects or if something broke along the move. Others were just not nice. These guys were nice, courteous, noted the condition of objects, and very helpful.

So happy with the job Hawks movers did on packing and moving my house. Mark and Robert were super fast and took great care of my things. They were even able to fit all my junk in their trailer...although I did mention I didn't have that much stuff, but it turns out that I really did have that much stuff, they still made it work lol! Although they weren't the cheapest place that sent me a quote, they were worth every penny I spent on the move. Thank you so much for all your help guys :)

Overall, the move was successful. While I was expecting a truck, an open trailer attached to a full size pickup was what was used. The two movers were hard working, though they were almost an hour late. They were kind in taking my garden cart to get air in the tires so I could unload the stuff in my car. I believe I received good value for my money.

Jayden's Moving Company quickly reached out once I placed my request for the moving help I needed. They arrived at the time they said they would, and they called to confirm the order. They listened to everything we told them, and did the job in a perfessional manner. During this moving period which could have been stressful, they allowed it to be a stress free time for us. Without a doubt I would recommend them for a move!

The movers showed up on time, and worked their butts off to get everything done in a timely manner. I only saw the guys break a few times for water (which was needed, moving in 100 degree weather) I would definitely recommend them to anyone who wants friendly, hard working movers.

I am really happy considering the fact that I have chosen Green Van Lines for my move. They moved us without any problem and charged us a very moderate amount. There were few fragile items and heavy furniture but nothing actually caused any damage. I have to say that the movers of Green Van Lines knew their job and they came prepared for the task. They were perfect at everything and they were affordable too. Thanks a lot to Green Van Lines van lines for their excellent service. I have decided to use them for my future moves again.

I requested quotes from several pool table movers late on a Monday night, and Marc got back with me promptly. He had a 3pm, and we scheduled the appointment. He contacted me 30 minutes before his arrival and showed up on time. He and his partner were very nice and also efficient, taking less than 45 minutes to disassemble the table. After arriving at the new location, we discussed the best location for the table, and they took about an hour to reassemble. The table is perfectly level and looks great, and the whole process was only 2 hours. Marc and his partner were extremely nice and I would recommend them to anyone.

I agree with other reviewers that there is a bit of a disconnect in the office and my estimate was significantly off from my final price. There is also a bit of excessive overwrapping but I can understand why for a long distance move. Rose and Jennifer worked to ensure my final price was closer to the estimate and within my budget. William in logistics ensured the truck arrived within the timeframe I needed for a very specific and tight move due to a work start date. I would say what makes Great Nation great are the moving crews. Eric ran my pick up and did an excellent job securing my items and documenting everything that was loaded into the truck. Fred and Carlos went out of their way to ensure my delivery came on a specific day that was out of their time range. They were pleasant and worked extremely hard even though it was probably an inconvenience for them. Fred was on the crew for my pick up and was familiar with my items and my moving situation and just an absolute pleasure to work with. Even though there were a few hiccups I still 100 percent recommend Great Nation if you are looking for a fast and efficient move with great movers who care. A lot of long distance companies want you to wait weeks for your items. For a NJ to FL move I had my move completed in 4 days. I would definitely use Great Nation again in the future and would say any issue I experienced would happen with any other company. I called after another moving company bailed on me 2 days before my move. Great Nation was able to jump in and coordinate my move, deal with my high stress level, and make sure all issues were handled to my satisfaction. A+++

This company is by far the best moving company ever. Their customer service is amazing. The crew took care of your stuff and better than I could've asked. They are fast but taking care of every detail and wrapped everything in blankets and wrap. The crew was very respectful and all our belongings were delivered and located in their spot at our new home. They packed and unpacked everything for us. Nothing lost, nothing broke. Totally worth the price!!! I won't use any other mover company from now on!!

Saul and his helper did everything we asked, and more, to help move my daughter to her new apartment. His rates were the best by far, and he did not stop at just helping us move. He hung drapes, assembled furniture, and many other tasks over and above. I highly recommend SCV movers!!!

This moving company is the bee's knees. They were exceptional movers and kind. They really knew there stuff. These guys did absolutely everything to protect and secure our furniture. As well as the padding and srink wrap all breakable items they also ensured that our beds where kept clean. When we arrived at the new house they also helped with the arrangement of my rooms. They didnt mind me changing my mind. Oh yeah, at my new house the plug for the dryer was different and they changed out the old one for a new one that fitted. I owe them a debt of gratitude for being safe and effecient. Ur is Urmoving company. Right on and big ups!! Keep up the good work.

Wow - John and his crew are the best movers I've ever hired, hands down. I needed a last minute move, and they were on top of everything from start to finish. They were on time, worked fast, and the price could not be beat. Total pros. Definitely will hire Metroplex Moving Services again.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

    • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
    • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
    • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
    • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
    • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
