Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I hire the best fence professional in Houston?

An online search is the easiest way to find the best fence professional in Houston. By going online, you can view both ratings and customer reviews of several pros in the area. Some reviews also include photos, which can give you an idea of the pros’ quality of work.

Texas regulates contractors through its Department of Licensing and Regulation, so ensure that whichever pro you choose can present their license. Your final step is to contact several fencing pros in Houston and compare estimates.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The first step to setting up a consultation with a fence professional during the COVID-19 pandemic is sending the pro a message, which you can easily do online. Ask potential pros if you can set up a phone call or video chat to explain what fencing services you need. A video chat is useful because it allows the fence installer to guide you so they can get the necessary information. During the consultation, discuss virtual payments, the timeline of the project and any precautions you’ll both take to ensure safety.

How can I find out if a fence professional is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

To figure out whether a fence professional can be considered an essential service provider during the COVID-19 pandemic, check the website of your city or state government. Another useful resource is CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19, which provides information in a nationwide context.

Within it are 16 different categories of infrastructure sectors that are considered essential. But keep in mind that some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Can I use digital payments to pay for fence and gate installation and repairs?

Currently, many fence and gate professional use common digital payment services like Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Zelle and more. Many more are quickly adopting the platforms as COVID-19 continues to force companies to digitally transform.

Contact the professional beforehand to discuss whether you can make digital payments, and take all measures to comply with social distancing recommendations. Compare fence professionals side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Does a fence professional need to enter my home?

Fencing jobs are done outdoors, so a fence professional or contractor will most likely not need to enter your home during the project. The exception to this may be any electrical work.

However, you may be able to work with fence professional to give them the information they need ahead of time through video chats, emails and photos sent digitally. Avoid all contact and practice social distancing guidelines set forth by the CDC and your local government. Discuss the best approach with local fence pros before they arrive at your home.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

Do fence installers offer remote or virtual services?

Because fence installation needs to be done in person, fence professionals usually cannot offer remote services. If you come across profiles that state they offer remote services, message the fence installer to see what those services include.

For consultations and meetings, ask the fence professional if you can coordinate a virtual consultation in which you explain the project to them through video, photos and drawings transferred online. If not, it may be wise to postpone the project and book an appointment at a later date

Amazing job by Steve and his team. The work was high quality. Amazing the price was lower than other bids with what they offer. They use screws to install the pickets, no nails. I will never have to worry about the pickets coming loose. Installed 240' of fence in one day and it and it looks fantastic.

Chris and Cory installed a metal fence and repaired a wooden fence. They cheerfully made adjustments requested after they began working and worked longer than anticipated after running into some large roots that needed to be removed. Attention to detail was evident throughout, including working after dark to touch up the paint on the gate. We are very pleased with the results and would definitely hire this company again.

Antonio and Four Seasons did a great job installing a fence in my back yard. When they were finished, there was one thing that I asked to be changed and Antonio went above and beyond to make it exactly how I wanted it. Highly recommended!

Lon created a gate in my back fence so I could get to the other side (and kill some poison ivy that keeps climbing my fence). He also moved my existing 2 gates on the side of the house. The space that they were moved to was smaller so he had to cut down the size of both gates. He used my existing fencing to help keep the costs lower. He did a great job on both gates. His bid was quite a bit lower than the other company that bid on the job and I felt he knew a lot more about building gates than the other company. This was important since the 2 companies that installed my gates a few years ago apparently did not install them correctly and they both were sagging, dragging the ground and hard to open.

Had a basic wood picket fence installed. The guys were punctual and worked fast. Posts and frame are fine. Right now it it looks good but unfortunately, the fence pickets were put on with 1/4 inch gaps between them (a few have nearly 1/2 inch gaps.) I have built a few fences back in the day and was taught to place the pickets up against each other because as they dry over the next year or 2, they will shrink and naturally develop the appropriate 1/4 inch gaps. In a year or 2, these will have very large gaps after the have dried which will not look good.

Antonio and his crew installed a 7' cedar fence and sod in our backyard. The service was nothing short of exceptional. Antonio was on site to oversee the progress 2-3 times per day. They arrived before 8am and worked until almost 6pm. Antonioni was very responsive to all questions and emails, making it a stress-free experience. We are extremely pleased with the project's outcome. Would certainly hire again.

Jose and his team were phenomenal. My entire experience with Jose was easy, professional, and the customer service was outstanding. From the punctual arrival to offer an estimate to the responsiveness to my questions and scheduling, Jose was the utmost professional. During the installation of my new fence, he and his team arrived on time and finished the job in less than 2 days! They were so good on site, my neighbor actually texted me and commended me on the crew and their craftsmanship. They were organized and respectful of neighbor’s property and just pleasant to work with. And the price was beyond reasonable for the high quality work. Thank you, Jose and team!

I had a hard time trying to select someone to repair and install a new gate..When Rigoberto and Richard came out to give an estimate and get measurments, I could tell they knew gates and exactly what I wanted. I had a old short backyard entry gate that had a design that I wanted to put on a taller new gate and It was no problem for Richard to do.Everything was done at my house without taking my gate somewhere for a couple of days. He did an Amazing job..It is simply Beautiful and I love it..It looks very classy. They were both really nice guys and the best part was the price was very fair and affordable..I highly recommend this guys..They are highly qualified and skilled to give you a great looking gate or fence..Thanks for doing a Great Job...

Hello everyone Stan started off as a nice person thought he was a very professional until I paid him all his money and thats when I got to see the real him. First off let me say I have dealt with contractors before and some could be crooks and money hungry. I paid this guy 3730 and the material he used to build my fence / gate is cheap. He didnt even bring a sample fence to even let me see before installing but I guess from the conversation him and I had I felt content enough that he would provide me with a great product especially for the price I paid. Honestly my fence is very flimsy and I believe in the next few years I will be having to replace it because it is not strong metal. It looks like a fence that he bought from Lowes or Home Depot and just only invested in buying me the metal swing gate. That's the only thing that is real metal the rest of it is aluminum. I had to get another person to come out and put a gate opener and instal my anchor that he just threw in my yard because he got upset with me because I asked him if he was avoiding me. He told me he could get me a gate opener for $300 and install it $300 dollar. I said okay although he we did not have a contract on that. But he agreed to come back out not giving me a exact date but told me he would come out that following weekend. Mind you I paid him $3,730 knowing he still had some more work to do for me. All I know is when I called he didn't answer nor did he respond back to my text message or voicemail. So I called from another number later that week and guess what he answered. He got upset with me for asking him was he avoiding my call. But he sent a text message after getting off the phone with me to argue his frustration. I messaged him right on back. It's so funny how once a person get their money from you they want to start slacking and trying to put you on their schedule. A little advice to the next few people that hire this guy. First make his ass bring you the product so you can see what you are getting, and don't pay his ass none of the money until he finishes the job. I had to give half of the money up front just for him to start the job and go buy the material. The cheap ass material. I was over charged. The first guy who came out to my house brought the sample of the material so I could see what I was getting and it was real metal. I chose not to let him do my gate because he had a second job and it would have taken him almost a month to finish but I didn't even have to pay up front. He's the same guy that had to come out and fix some of the errors that he noticed on my gate causing me to get off extra money. People really look around before you choose this guy he is a crook and is money hungry.
