Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should a pool inspection cost?

pool inspection will cost around $175, on average, with a low range of $85 and a high end of $499. This price can include a range of different systems checks. First, the pool inspector will perform a visual assessment for signs of debris, cracks, sharp edges and other damage that could lead to injury or deterioration of your pool. They will also check all chemicals, pumps, filters, circulation systems, heaters and other elements that make up the infrastructure of your pool.

To find out exactly how much it will cost to get your pool inspected by a professional, contact pool inspectors near you and request free cost estimates.

How much does it cost per year to maintain a pool?

It will cost around $1,032 per year for a weekly pool cleaning service. This price will increase for one-time services, ranging between $150 and $300. This is why it’s generally a good idea to find a pool cleaning company that can do lower-priced weekly maintenance. Ultimately, the cost you pay will vary by your pool’s size, the chemicals needed and the type of service you request.

How do I schedule a pool inspection?

To schedule a pool inspection, begin by searching for local pool inspectors on Thumbtack. When you find a pool inspector you’re interested in hiring, check their availability and choose a date and time. You can also ask the pool inspector to suggest other dates. Fill out the short survey about your pool inspection, and the inspector will get back to you to confirm the day and time of your inspection.

What are the advantages of hiring a professional pool inspector?

Hiring a professional swimming pool inspector comes with a number of different benefits. It helps homebuyers and owners understand what condition the pool is in, which will help with purchasing decisions, negotiations or simply budgeting for repairs. A pool inspector can also give an accurate assessment of the pool’s mechanical and electrical processes. Perhaps most important is the ability to detect problems in their infancy, so they don’t become expensive repairs down the road.

How long does it take to clean a pool?

The time it takes to clean a swimming pool depends heavily on the pool’s condition and size. Pools that receive regular weekly cleaning should take less time to clean, even if the cleaning includes skimming, scrubbing, applying chemicals and vacuuming. However, if you’re just opening your pool for the season, the process may take longer.

When searching for pool cleaners near you and gathering cost estimates, ask them how long they expect each cleaning will take.

What chemicals do you need to clean a pool?

The main categories of pool chemicals include sanitizers, oxidizers, water balancers, and specialty chemicals. Sanitizers (like chlorine and bromine) disinfect pool water. Oxidizers are a second type of sanitizing chemical meant to kill bacteria and algae. Water balancers keep the pH (acidity) level of the water in the correct place, as well as maintain the proper “hardness” — that is, levels of calcium and other elements. Other specialty chemicals include clarifiers, flocculant, algaecides and more.

If you don’t know how to properly use pool cleaning chemicals, consider hiring a professional pool cleaner to help you maintain your pool.

How often should you clean a pool?

The ideal schedule for pool cleaning is at least once per week. This schedule provides the ideal balance of not allowing problems to grow while still making each cleaning worth it. Weekly pool cleaning also helps you avoid expensive repairs in the future. By spot-cleaning when needed, such as skimming leaves and debris out of the pool or scrubbing away an algae spot, you can keep your pool in prime condition. It’s also recommended that you schedule a pool cleaning after any unusual scenarios, including hot weather, a pool party or a pet jumping in the pool.

How do I hire a pool cleaner?

You can hire a pool cleaner by searching for professionals near you online. Pool cleaning services will range from small businesses to larger companies, so to help you narrow down your search, base your decisions on customer reviews, ratings, customer-uploaded photos and conversations you have with the pool cleaners. Contact at least three different pool cleaners to compare their prices (ask for free cost estimates). And make sure to check licensing requirements in your state to ensure whoever you choose has the proper credentials.

John was quick to respond to my request for pool service, and he showed up when he said he would to inspect my pool equipment, explain the services provided and give me a price. For these reasons I will be switching my pool service from my current company to Today Pools. For anyone looking for a pool service company, I highly recommend Today Pools.

Noel and Imperial Pools is hands down, the BEST pool service company I’ve used. I had to open my pool and it was loaded with algae. Noel spent the time and effort to get my pool crystal clear, the cleanest I’ve seen it. He came every day to check PH and even asked me to take pictures to make sure it was improving - talk about great customer service! I’ve gone through a handful of pool companies in the last couple of years and Imperial is the best! Thank you, Noel!

Leslie is a very nice person and he was my first pool service guy that actually wanted to talk to me about what was going on with my pool. Most companies comes over and just clean or half clean your pool and keep going. They never take the time to see what the customer needs or issues with the pools. Thanks again for providing me this company and I would most definetly recommend Leslie Breaking Bad Pools to anyone. Trust me you will be happy once he comes out and provide service, lastly his prices are great and so is the serivce.

Everest Pools is one of the best pool service companies I've worked with for my current pool! Leo came out to see the problem a day before he was actually scheduled. He diagnosed the problem quickly, fixed it the same day, and made other recommendations. I thought it was going to be a much more costly problem but it was a relatively minor fix. Amazing customer service, trustworthy and knowledgable. I highly recommend Everest Pools for any pool issues you might have. They give you all the possible scenarios and pricing before they start looking at the issue to put your mind at ease. And they don't act annoyed when you ask a lot of questions. Thanks again!

they came out for the first time yesterday - and did an amazing job - so far so good - if they do this good of a job every time then I see us having service with them for many years to come. I had hired another pool company ( only lasted 1 month) and in a month the other guy didn't have my pool looking as good as these guys did in 1 visit- it was such a nice surprise coming home last night and seeing the great job they had done especially after having such a bad experience the last go around.

From the initial response to our request through all of the meetings we've had with Amy, we've experienced first class service. Amy has been very responsive and quick to provide drawings, modify drawings, bring samples, etc. They are everything we were looking for in having someone build a pool for us. We are extremely pleased, excited, and highly recommend Amy and her company!

I am writing this review in hopes that I can stop at least one person from doing business with this unprofessional business. I found AQUA through Thumbtack in May of 2017; I had just purchased a new home with a pool. AQUA was a new business and offered my first cleaning free if I signed up for monthly service, which I did. My first minor red flag was when they asked me to leave a HomeAdvisor. I complied and left a review. AQAU reached out to me to ask me to leave another because mine did not post; I again complied I registered for the site just to leave the review. They then emailed me and said my review did not post again, asked me to do it for a third time, and said “HomeAdvisor said they sent you two follow up verifications emails and you did not respond” – basically saying it was my fault that the review didn’t post, instead of thanking me for taking the time to review them twice (just on that one site). I understand a new company asking for reviews, but they completely overlooked the fact that I had already left positive reviews, and instead emailed accusingly asking why I hadn’t done it properly on HomeAdvisor. This left me with a bad impression but I ignored it and we decided to continue service. Fast forward to August. Aaron texted me to say he had cleaned my pool filter; and then I received an invoice for $100. I emailed customer service saying that I was not told there would be a charge for cleaning the filter; they replied “yes we weren’t sure if we had told you.” Extremely unprofessional; a customer should always be notified that a service will incur an additional charge, BEFORE the service is performed. Fast forward again to the end of August- Hurricane Harvey hit the Houston area, damaging our pool equipment and making it impossible for AQUA to perform service. Yet the exact same day Aaron came out and told us he could not service the pool, I received an invoice and was charged for September’s full service – even though they had told me mere hours before that they could not perform the service. So they are indiscriminately taking money from customers, even in the wake of a natural disaster. It then took me 9 emails back and forth with their customer service to get a refund processed. Even though I had received an email from Aaron stating “we will refund your September payment,” their customer service said they had not done so because I did not reply AGAIN and say that we wanted a refund. At this point I had stated in no uncertain terms, at least 5 times, that I wanted a refund. Also during that process, they continued to email me with petty comments, explaining how the situation was my fault. They went so far as to email me “you and your husband must not have good communication.” I have never been so taken aback by a supposed “customer service” response. These people are petty, rude, and are not above making personal attacks on their customers if it makes them feel better about a situation. Here is a copy/paste of the type of emails you can expect to receive: "No problem... Your 1 review will not hurt our company. We have plenty of awesome reviews...We can't make everyone happy. Also...it's good thing that we are refunding your monies...cause a lot of companies would NOT give you your money back. That's what makes us such a great company to hire. Cause we are honest people & open people. If the communication between you and the other person living in your household was open and clear...then we wouldn't be having these problems & confusions. P.s. On another note...we were going to refund you back your $50 that we supposedly were not supposed to charge you for on the filter clean, if you were to continue service. P.s.s Another thing, Mrs. Beverly...I don't know if you guys have kids or not...but if you do, then you know the problems & troubles that come along with raising children. My daughter was in the hospital for the past 2 weeks with a serious throat infection...which in turn resulted in a major surgery. So, our customers were the LAST thing on our mind. Because of my daughter's recovery process here at home; that has also taken up ALL of my time. So your ONE bad review and complaining is the LEAST of my worries right now....but...because I am not an evil or conniving person, I will refund your monies."
