Demi came out to fix a Water Heater Flue Roof Vent leaking into my attic. He was on time, reasonably priced, professional, and got the job done (replacing the sealant on the flashing and storm collar). I recommend Sweetwater Plumbing and look forward to using them again.

Gary is absolutely fantastic! If you're looking for an honest and dependable plumber look no further, Gary is definitely your guy. I'm not a very handy guy so needed to use Thumbtack to fix a hot water heater problem identified by my gas company. Apparently it was a very easy fix and Gary let me know immediately. He could've charged me a whole lot more to fix this problem and I would've paid it without knowing the fix was that easy but Gary doesn't take advantage of people. He understands if you treat people right he will have a customer for life and he definitely has one with me now. If you ever need a plumber call Gary ASAP! I guarantee you won't regret it!

Ramez was great! He even came early! He had to replace my water heater that is in the attic as the old one was leaking through the ceiling. After he drained the water from my old heater, he said he would be back in an hour with a new water heater. He did and installed the new water heater. I felt that he gave me a very competitive price and seemed very honest.

Walter called and offered to come the night before to replace our water heater. He and his associate both made sure not to bring water or mud into the house onto the carpet during the process and finished the replacement within the time quote given, all for a very reasonable price. Good to have hot water again!

I would give 10 stars if I could!! Joey was a delight to work with. I have had bad luck with plumbers in the past, so I was worried when I was looking for one to do a dishwasher and water heater repair. He was easy to work with, passionate about the job no matter how small, and the cost was not nearly as much as I thought it would be!! I have found a permanent plumber and I am so grateful for his excellent and expedient service!!

I was notified by Payless Plumbing less than an hour after I posted my request for a quote. The quote was the lowest of 5 so I called and spoke to Willie Flores. Willie was very professional and knowledgeable about plumbing, from the pictures I posted he was able to see and know what work was required. Payless was quick to repair with the water leak. I recommend Payless Plumbing for their honesty and professionalism to get the job done right in minimal time. Thank you

This was the first time I would be using a service like thumbtack but I was sure glad I did. Freddy from Steddy Plumbing won me over when he already told me precisely what the issue was with my water heater just from looking at pictures. He was very professional in his service and the best part, I wasn't even available when he completed the whole job in about an hour or less. I definitely would recommend Freddy from Steddy Plumbing for your plumbing issues. The guy knows his stuff!!!

I suspected our what are heater was a gas leak and asked 3 Coast Plumbing to come over and take a look at it. They responded very fast and were available when I needed. They came over for a consultation and fortunately, found no problem. They didn't charge me anything, as no repair had to be made. And if I have any problems with plumbing in the future, I will definitely contact them.

This was the absolute best experience I have ever had with a home repair contractor. I had them quote on replacing a water heater in my upstairs attic. I went with this quote because they quoted on an A O Smith brand water heater, which I know is made in the USA and because they offered a 3 year warranty on their labor. I asked for a bid Sunday night and received 4 quotes within minutes. Lightning Companies was able to do the work the next day and showed up on time ready to work. They were very careful to cover my carpet and completed the job within 2-3 hours. They supplied all the new parts necessary to install a water heater for the price they quoted and even turned my water heater a quarter turn to put the controls in a better location for me to do routine draining, etc. They left the work site clean and gave me all the papers that came with the water heater. I am extremely satisfied with this whole experience and will call this company in the future because they also do other types of work and repairs. I will definitely recommend this company and, in fact, have already told my younger brother about them as he is looking to have his water heater replaced.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
