- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first step is to determine the needs of the customer through questions and conversation. I want to make the customer feel at ease. I talk about their needs and expectations first. It is not an interrogation but more like two people having a conversation I also ask if there are any known allergies such as nuts, berries, and dairy. I also remind the customer, while they may not be allergic, some of their guests could be. I tell the customer upfront, I do not offer any gluten/dairy-free products at this time. Some customers know exactly what they want right down to the color of the sugar pearls, others need a nudging. The ice breaker conversation helps me to hone in on the customer type. The next step is to determine the budget. There are some people who do not realize the cost of custom cakes nor have they counted that in their budget. My job is to help them come up with a design that will stay within their overall budget. What is the point of finding a design you like but it is not affordable? I want to see their ideas, pictures are great and I encouraged them to send me as many as they like because we can take bits and pieces from each one to create their memory. There is a great deal of planning, time, work, and money that preparing for a party requires. My job is to give the person one less thing to worry about, to check off the cake, cupcakes, etc, Once we have settled on a design, the date, time delivery or pickup, we discuss the deposit and future payments. Again everyone is different and I will do my best to accommodate you.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I started baking with my mother and aunt at the age of six. I created cakes for my children as they were growing up. My gift for design is a God-given talent. I am constantly trying new things. Even though I do not have a degree or certificate from a prestigious culinary school, I do not cut corners, I have studied hours of videos and have a subscription to Yener's Way tutorial. Serdar Yener is a world-renown cake designer, baker, and instructor.
