This is one of the best experiences I've ever had with a trainer. We have a 2 year old male standard poodle, Beau. His behavior, fear aggression, was not conducive to downtown living. Since neither of us knew how to handle it on our own, we reached out to Mike for our options. From the very beginning he managed our expectations, explained every step of the training process, and best of all took time to listen to our concerns. Before recommending the 3 week obedience board and train, Mike heard all of Beau's behavior, asked questions and gave us some preliminary feedback. When we went to drop him off with Mike, we thought it would be a quick hand over of the leash and we would be out. However, Mike took his time with us, and with Beau, getting to know him and his temperament. He also reassured us since Beau was an inside dog, most of his training and all of his boarding would be inside, to keep with our conditions at home. This was very comforting for us. During the training, Mike recommended we visit once a week to see Beau to play and work with him. It was comforting for both of us. Mike treated Beau like a pet, just as we do with affection and play, and yet managed Beau's behavior and obedience like a trainer. Such a dynamic was critical for us in seeing the transition from home to training back to home as seamless as possible. When we went to pick Beau up, Mike spent over 45 minutes with us going over the commands, shoring up any last minute concerns, and "training" us. (If you don't know it, humans are often just as much to blame for the dog's behavior as the dog, but I digress.) We highly recommend Mike for your dog as well.

Wow, it's a miracle is all I can say. I have two dogs that desperately needed help. A Weimaraner that was tough as nails and a Beagle that was soft as butter. My Weimaraner had zero obedience and was out of control in every aspect of the word. My Beagle was just the opposite; she would walk behind us, shy away from people and was very timid. I was very concerned about the training process. J.R. put me at ease by fully explaining his process and that the results that would come more quickly by using reinforcement and then following up with lots of praise afterwards on my big dog. I have to say the results are amazing; nothing short of a miracle really. My dog is so much happier, I am so much happier and I can't believe what a few sessions has accomplished. I only wish I had found him sooner. Oh, my little dog, the Beagle; she is progressing nicely too. He found her "happy place" and then worked his magic and brought her out of her shell. We could not be happier and strongly recommend J.R. with Green Timber Training. I will be telling all my friends that need training about the only dog whisperer I know.

Modern K9s provides great dog training. They came to my home to consult and meet my dog and we agreed on a package to help him learn. What I like best is they train and work with you and your dog in your home, in your real life situation. My pug loves them and they have made themselves available to answer questions and help retrain me. My dog could hardly sit still for 5 minutes, but after working with him, he is a joy to be around. Highly attentive and will sit as long as I want him to. They customize their program based on your needs and the needs of your dog. I am so happy I went with them over other choices.

Paula communicated very well. My dog is very shy hand had some bad experiences with other groomers. Paula was very patient with my dog. She let me know that she wanted to try to make my dog not fear being groomed. When she completed the groom, my dog came out happy and looked great. Paula was professional and very kind. We look forward to working with her again. Thanks Paula for your dedication and kindness!

Myself, my family and our pets have been customers of Tri-County K9 Academy for over 12 years. Whether our dogs are just starting obedience training, are working out for a dog trial, if we have a pet we have a behavior issue we need help with, or if I need assistance with my Service Dog, both Darryl and Tammy have been patient, excellent instructors and their daughters are great helpers. The environment at Tri-County K9 is set up to be safe, educational and rewarding for both animals and humans. They have watched over several of our dogs when we have had to leave town on short notice and we have always come home to happy, clean dogs that you can just tell had a well rounded fun time. Tri-County K9 Academy is an excellent experience for all whether you are training with your own dog, having your dog trained, adopting one of the many dogs rescued and rehabbed at Tri-County, needing boarding, or becoming a better dog owner. Tri-County K9 Academy should be your first stop for all your K9 needs.

Britney has been my go-to trainer for the past year with all of our rescue dogs. She is very patient working with each other their personalities and we love the fact she uses positive reinforcement, not shock collars or anything of the sort other trainers quoted us using. She also has been helping guide us through the process of finding the right Service Dog prospect and owner-training legally. We definitely recommend her for all our dog training needs, whether in person or through Skype/Facetime when she's not in our area!

Patty more than exceeded our expectations while watching our dog for us. She was so easy to work with, prompt, caring, & went above and beyond to make us feel our dog and home were taken care of. She is very kind and our dog just loves her! She also left a small surprise for my daughters when we got back and they were so happy. Thank you so much for being so amazing to our family and such a pleasure to work with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
