Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does dog training typically cost?

The average cost of dog training ranges from $60 to $155 per hour. But, your dog’s training might cost more or less depending on a number of different factors. For example, you might pay less if you schedule group classes instead of private instruction. The type of training (aggressive behavior, basic obedience, off-leash training, etc.) could have different prices as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a dog trainer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

Utilize as many digital means as necessary when setting up appointments or consultations with dog trainers near you during the COVID-19 pandemic. Currently, the best way to begin is by conducting a search for dog trainers online. Compare services side by side, and ask each dog trainer you contact if it’s possible to schedule a consultation or appointment completely virtually. During this time, you should also discuss strategies for completing training and payments through digital means.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a dog trainer when social distancing?

Current CDC guidelines state, “Do not let pets interact with people or animals outside the household.” It also explains that more studies are needed to understand if and how animals could be affected by the virus that causes COVID-19 and how this might affect human health.

If you’re uncomfortable with hiring a dog trainer right now, you can reach out to dog trainers in your area to see if they will let you book an appointment in the future when social distancing guidelines are lifted. Or, ask if they offer virtual or remote services.

If you do decide to hire a pro to train your dog in person, limit any physical contact with the trainer. Stay 6 feet apart, sanitize items and surfaces, and use digital payments instead of cash or a check.

Is dog training worth the money?

Dog training can be a highly rewarding investment for most dog owners. With dog training, you can establish a better, healthier relationship with your dog, who will learn to understand your commands and wishes. Your frustration levels may decrease, and you might be able to resume activities you’ve put off, such as having people over or taking your dog to public places (though, this is hard to guarantee because each dog is unique).

Just remember that no amount of dog training will pay off if you don’t practice and follow the directions the dog trainer gives you. Consistency is the most important factor.

Is it ever too late to start training a dog?

It’s never too late to train your dog — “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is a myth. Whether you adopt an older dog from the shelter or simply want to have a better relationship with your elderly dog, hiring a dog trainer can be a good investment.

What do professional dog trainers do?

Dog trainers can perform a range of activities, ranging from training law enforcement dogs to working with therapy dogs or search-and-rescue dogs. However, most people hire dog trainers for obedience training. This is largely a process of training the human — much of how a dog interprets our behaviors, commands, tone and body language is counterintuitive at first. The trainer will typically come to your home to observe your relationship with your dog, teach you how to train a command and give you guidance for reinforcing it.

Can I use digital payments to pay for dog training?

Many professional dog trainers accept digital payments instead of cash or check. One effect of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it is encouraging companies and services to onboard digital platforms like PayPal, Zelle, Google Pay, Venmo and Square Cash as a means of curbing virus transmission risk.

When you contact dog trainers near you, ask if they’ll accept digital payments. This information is also typically available on their online profiles.

Do dog trainers offer remote or virtual services?

Although dog training is traditionally performed in person, the COVID-19 pandemic may have caused some professional dog trainers to move to remote training and virtual services. You can contact dog trainers near you to ask about the possibility of remote or virtual services. Also, ask whether all aspects of the process can be digital, including payment.

How can I find out if a dog trainer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Guidelines on essential services are constantly being updated by local and federal government agencies. To see which services qualify as essential COVID-19 service providers, start with your city or state’s government website.

A reliable list of federal guidelines is available on CISA’s Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19 webpage. However, not all jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.  .

Does a dog trainer need to enter my home?

Depending on the type of dog training you need, a dog trainer may need to enter your home. Many behaviors that need to be corrected are associated with the dog being in the house. However, some types of training can take place virtually or even outside while observing safe social distancing practices.

Start by asking dog trainers in your area if they’ll perform a video consultation instead of an in-person one, and ask if they need to enter your home.

Greetings, I want you and everyone who reads this message to know I strongly suggest you "DO NOT" use this training. His so call training is an absolute disgrace. My dog came back to me knowing how to do "NOTHING." For the four weeks, while my dog was with this trainer, I saw one, yes ONE video on his website of my dog's so-called progress. My question to you is ---How can you successfully train a dog without training the owner also? This guy gives me a 20-minute rundown of the commands and a sheet of paper. This one is on you, use this trainer if you have extra cash to then get yourself a trainer who will train your dog. I noticed this guy spent more time with his own dogs at his dogs' events than he did training the MANY dogs he was charged to train. My dog will be trained and I pray you don't waste your time, money, and frustration on this guy. Don't be like me, because, I read a very bad review concerning this training prior to hiring him, I spoke to him about the extremely bad review and I decided to give him a chance to redeem himself, SILLY ME! This guy is a ripoff. I want my money back that you steal!!!!!

Morgan is very patient in teaching you how to calm your dog by using desensitization. My dog has already made vast improvement in the first week of training. So much so that the vet noticed when they came out yesterday. I highly recommend Morgan for your training needs and this works on older dogs so you can teach an old dog new tricks.

We left out dog with Animal Talker for an extended period of time for training. Our dog returned with no noticable improvement in behavior and is now more agressive towards other dogs and people than before her experience with Animal Talker. I do not recommend this provider. I felt like we paid a premium for boarding with little to no training.

I am already a dog trainer, but couldn’t train my own dog house breaking. I wasn’t told what to do exactly. I called my leader of my dog group. Followed her advice & voila, it was taken care of. Vivian is really great at what she does. I would hire her if I didn’t already know so much.

Amy is fantastic with dogs. After two sessions, we've seen breakthroughs with our dogs that we haven't seen in the previous three years, including the time we spent in group training.

Let's face it - Puppy Training is really about owner training. Amy and her partner John tailored their training to both the needs of our puppy and our family. We have already recommended Animal Talker to our friends (potential first time dog owners). We REALLY wished we had the opportunity to gets some "training" from Animal Talker before we brought our puppy home. We will continue to use them as our dog grows.

We sent our pit bull pup Bruno out to Voraussehen Kennels for a 4 week training course. They have a large piece of beautiful property and all the dogs currently in training looked happy and healthy when we arrived. Bruno was trained to respond to several commands and when my husband picked him up he was really like a new dog. He’s still high energy, because he’s a pup, but he responds awesomely to his commands. His training also happened to be over Hurricane Harvey and Mike and his team to great care of Bruno and the other dogs and kept us informed. They sent us home with a new collar, printed commands and a really happy dog. Just great work, all around. We’d recommend to anyone.

Oscar and team did an excellent job with my two dogs during their 3 week basic obedience training. I have two dogs from the same litter that at times could be very frustrating. Oscar was able to teach them and me the necessary skills to make it fun again to have two dogs. The team at Barks 5th Avenue took good care of my pups and they all were very nice and loving of the dogs as if they were their own. I also very much appreciated the fact that they allow you to visit your dogs while they have them. Some other trainers insisted that I could not see the dogs until they completed training. Being able to see them periodically let me see that they were progressing on their training and that they were healthy and not overly stressed with being away from home. My favorite skill learned was “place”. This gave me some reprieve from their endless energy and they would not move until I freed them.

Dawn has a great understanding of dogs. So sweet with my labs. Showed up on time, stayed late, and has been in touch with me since our initial training to check on my dog. She sends tips and is really invested in how well my dogs do.

These guys know their stuff! We did the basic training. It was weird being without him for 2 weeks but they sent videos every few days so we could see progress. Your dog will still require practicing with You as the handler. I am very happy with our "new" dog and will likely will return for off-leash training.

10/10 will DEFINITELY hire again as/if needed. John has been extremely accommodating, he exudes a love for dogs, has a natural connection with them, and is extremely patient with me (as the frustrated and impatient dog owner), and his training (including owner AND dog) has been very effective. Can’t say enough good things!

An AMAZING experience! Alejandro was exactly like the dog whisper. I learned so many strategies hands on and visually to teach my dog! I saw a dramatic change in my dog after a 3 hour session and made so much progress. I’m so happy with this experience and have all the information and physical techniques I need to continue training my dog without him :)

I had the best dog training experience with Alejandro from Pupsties. He went above and beyond for my husband and I. He was extremely knowledgeable on the information he was showing us about our dogs. He did an outstanding job of correcting us. I was able to see changes in my dog on the first day following the information he told us to you. What I appreciate most about Alejandro was his patience and the fact that he stayed an extra hour just to make sure we had the information down. I would recommend this trainer to anyone who needs help with their dog.

I believe they know how to train but they are not responsive to specific client needs. We have two dogs and they knew that. They do what works best and easiest for them during training. They changed his foods and gave our dogs commands they are used to that are different from commands we use with our other dog. That could have been asked and communicated. Now we have two dogs and two sets of commands. And her rationale makes no sense - bc we use no in conversation often. We do not ... we have older children ... if anything we occasionally say don’t do that but almost never “no” in conversation in this house. Not impressed or pleased.

We had a wonderful experience with our dog Boo being trained at Stealth K9. Boo was with Michael for a week and it was a dramatic difference. He is no longer pulling "us" along for his walks. He was a good dog but now he is a much better dog. Walking him is so much less stressful. Thank you so much! We are all happier!

I really liked the way that the trainer worked with what I could afford. They picked up my dog and sent me pics and videos of her training. I have had no issues with her barking and she is a new dog. He helped me even after I picked her up and guided me through some questions and was very knowledgeable in what he is doing. Thanks again Amber Underwood
