I hired Hollow Tree Services to remove a large tree in the front yard and to top off a Pear tree in the back yard. Felix and his son Severo were extremely professional in getting the job done. Severo managed this job starting from the initial contact, on-site visit to give free estimates, explaining clearly on how the job will be done, scheduling the job, arriving before time and getting the job done within the time promised. He also provided guidance on what should be done with the mulch that remained after Stump grinding. I will certainly recommend them to others. These guys are a true example of a great Professional Service.

This was the first time I've ever had to use a tree service, so I didn't know what to expect. Luckily I picked Right Way Tree Service because the detailed knowledge of this company made for a very pleasant experience. Larry arrived early, assessed the tree, and then gave a detailed description of what it would take to remedy my issue. I will definitely use Right Way Tree Service again.

I hired Galveston Construction to remove both my neighbors' 6' privacy fences and my own 4' corral fence and replace them with one 6' pine privacy fence. They pulled out all of the old posts planted in concrete. They filled in all of the holes and erected a new fence using the latest construction tricks that I would have never thought of. They implimented a 2x6 Rot Board at the base with a 2x4 back creating a ledge to nail the slats into. The gates were framed in steel which he welded together, and included supports for additional strength. In addition to using only top grade lumber, the gate hardware is heavy duty and locks easily when closed. He custom fashioned the fence with great carpentry work around a few trees that were growing right on my property line. He was very careful to make sure that the neighbors were happy with the new construction. He even went as far as repairing the gate on the next door neighbor's fence that had been hanging in disrepair for years. What I got from Stan was a beautiful fence that will remain standing for years and years. Will I hire him again? I certainly will. His bid was his word. And written on a signed contract. No add-ons, no additional charges, no hassles, no bull shit. I never had a question as to what he was going to do at any time. A real pro.

Black Stone Trees was very responsive to our request coming out to provide a quote the day we notified them and had no issues cutting down a dead tree close to power lines. They also went above and beyond trimming a large tree in our front yard above the scope we originally discussed without requesting additional payment. I would recommend using this company for trimming and tree removal.

I don't normally get a chance to write these kind of things, nor do I necessarily check all categories as "strengths", but I'm honored to provide a reference for Mr. Servin and Servin's Tree Service. His company was referred to be by a dear and trusted friend. He removed a large oak tree for 4 x's less the price I was quoted by an arborist. The job was started promptly (in fact, he and his crew arrived early), and he finished in 5 hours. You would not even know I had a 30ft tree in front of my house after being cut, and the stump was grinded down. Mr. Servin's crew was professional, extremely efficient, hard working and kind. They cut the tree down and cut and stacked fire wood for my neighbor and for me (above and beyond, in my opinion). From the very first call to the final hand shake, this gentleman and his company were AMAZING. I not only highly recommend this company, but plan to use him for any and all of my future tree work. Thanks for an outstanding job, Mr. Servin!

Henry did a great job at removing a garden shed from our backyard! He was professional and not only hauled off the debris but also cleaned up the area where the shed stood, stacking leftover cinder blocks and removing all scraps. Will hire again for future projects where labor is needed.

Jason was awesome!! We just leased a one acre property that had been vacant and neglected. Jason was able to mow earlier than expected and communicated his arrival time. He gave the yard lots of TLC as if it were his own. He even removed debris found hiding in the grass and let us know about weak spots in the fenced yard where a dog could escape. We definitely made the best choice for lawn care. See you next week, Jason!!

Had them remove some very tall dead pines that were close to my house. Found them very knowledgeable and responsive to my concerns. Watching them tie down everything and climb that high was amazing. Highly reccomend them.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.
