Johnny and his crew were great to work with on our recent daughter's graduation party. I contacted them late (about a week and 1/2 before event) and they were amazingly accommodating, polite and just on top of everything. We had wonderful, really yummy fajitas and Johnny had a great idea for some awesome appetizers (stuffed bacon wrapped jalapenos and corn fritters with cilantro cream sauce). They quickly got all the chafing dishes going in our kitchen for our buffet did appetizer set ups on tables in our garage so our kitchen wasn't messy (really appreciated that). They made everything seamless. Everyone raved about the food and were asking who did the catering (always a good sign). Santini and Martin, who were our servers, were very helpful and provided excellent service. They even helped with things outside of their responsibilities. Thanks, guys! I am so glad I took a chance on them and will definitely use them again in the future.

I hired JC Cooks for a private dinner party for my boyfriends 50th birthday. The food was amazing. She did an appetizer, a salad and a great swordfish main entree. Not only was i happy with her but im waiting for the next party so i can hire her again. Joyce is very affordable on any budget, very professional and a lovely lady. Make sure and hire her for your next catering needs.

If I could give 6 stars I would. Working with Leslie was so easy! Usually the breakfast/lunch part of our events is the most time consuming and stressful, but for the first time, I wasn't freaking out. She was incredibly prompt with quotes, answered all my questions (no matter how stupid), and thought of everything before I even asked. I'm always nervous about catering since I've had some horror stories with incredibly late caterers. Not them! They arrived an hour early, prepped, and we had an excellent breakfast. My office is notorious for being incredibly picky when it comes to food, and all I heard around the event was how amazing the food was and how friendly and fantastic the chefs were. This was a first for us! I'm afraid they're going to see a lot of us in the future, and I can honestly say that one of the reasons my event went so smoothly is due to Fabulous Affairs.

The Knicely family was absolutely spectacular! They did SO MUCH more than we were expecting, not only did they set up tables and food they served the salad to the tables, poured wine, cut cake, AND helped clean up the venue!! They were so sweet the whole time and it was an absolute pleasure to have them and our family absolutely loved their food!! From the appetizers to the main course our guests just couldn't get enough!!!

I had a birthday party for my wife with 80+ guests. Goodies & Bits provided 3 different Paella dishes, a Spanish salad and 4 different appetizers. The food could not have been better and my guests raved about the fare. Five of their people worked the party. They were well dressed, professional and accommodating. Marvin and Estella are a joy to work with. I look forward to using them again at a future event.

Lyndie was an absolutely incredible caterer! My wife and I recently booked Lyndie for our wedding, she worked with us on price and put forth an amazing spread. We had a 'southern charcuterie' appetizer(which unfortunately I never saw, fantastic reviews though), pork loin, broccoli, and garlic cheese grits. Everything turned out perfectly, especially the grits! She was even able to provide bamboo plates at out request for only a little extra so we could be more Eco-friendly. I would absolutely recommend her to anyone.

Shalamar took care of just about everything for my wedding, planned it all a month before my wedding date and everything within my budget!!! We had many quotes from other caterers, planners etc.. None of which compared to Elegant Events. We were very pleased with her professionalism while also being personal. Overall a great experience and glad we went with Elegant Events to take care of it all.

Longhorn Catering went above and beyond all expectations for our State Competition, an event with over 400 people. They worked with us to customize our menu to adapt for vegetarians, gluten free participants, and even saved the day with a last minute request. We had stellar reviews from many of our participants about the lasagna and salad. It seemed like their whole family came out to help make everything perfect for us, but every single person in their family team was highly professional and focused. Even with our somewhat chaotic volunteer-run event, everyone from Longhorn Catering was cool, collected, and friendly. And fast! We couldn't believe how quickly they moved everyone through the two buffet lines. Hot food was kept piping hot, cool food was kept nice and cool, and everything was kept tidy and clean. Truly stellar food, service, coordination, professionalism, all delivered and managed by kindhearted folks. Our nonprofit works all over the state and we wish we could take Longhorn with us to every event we'll ever host. We would trust them completely with any event we host in south Texas! Thank you for helping make our event wonderful!

We had Troy cook all the food for our daughters' wedding and he did a fantastic job. Our meal was brisket, potato salad, barbeque beans, and salad. The brisket was exceptional and we got a lot of very good comments that it was the best they had ever had. Because we live out of town he brought his smoker to our house and started the cooking early the morning of the wedding which was extra special because really enjoyed his company along with his helper. I would recommend him and his crew for any occasion. Lynn and Dawnya Pierce

This was our first time having our Super Bowl party catered and my husband was skeptical. We had about 30 guests. Chef Vida was the hit of the party. She was very professional. She interacted with the guest as well as preparing the food onsite. I can’t tell you what entree the guests enjoyed most—gumbo, chicken, or fried fish. She is known for her fried fish tower. The fish was so good our guests would eat it before she could complete the tower. My husband and I were impressed with her professionalism, interaction with the guests, and how she cleaned the kitchen after the party. He pressed me to get on her calendar for next year before anyone else took that date. We are on the schedule.

Martino catered my wedding and it was a great success. We had a hawaiian theme, including hawaiian food, and Martino did an excellent job preparing the menu we had in mind. His presentation was very authentic, including ti leaves and colorful flowers on the tables, and he even provided bamboo dinnerware and cutlery! Martino took our theme into consideration when planning the setup of the food and made sure that everything would be just the way we wanted it. We served guava flavored cupcakes to our guests, which Martino allowed us to try beforehand to make sure he got them just right. The first batch he made was tasty, but didn't pack enough flavor for us. A few days later, we tried batch #2, which was just right. We got several compliments from our guests about how delicious they were! Martino helped make our wedding everything we had hoped it could be. Thank you so much!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good caterer?

Reviews, interviews and menu tastings will help you find the right catering choice for your big day. Start by screening possible wedding caterers based on past reviews. If a caterer you are interested in has a review that concerns you, ask them about it; how they respond will be very telling. Next, ask about their availability for your wedding date.

If the wedding caterer is available on your date, it’s time to talk about menus and prices. Be clear about what your maximum budget is find out what choices this will allow you. Caterers may custom-create a menu for your event, or they may have menu templates within different price ranges that can guide your decision. A clear budget gives the caterer clear parameters within which to work and offer creative suggestions. Schedule a menu tasting to confirm you love your wedding menu. Once you have a menu and date, and have paid a deposit to reserve the caterer’s services, confirm additional details including when the food will be delivered to the site, what kind of service will be provided, how many servers will be onsite and for how long, and who is responsible for setup and cleanup. The more specific your contract, the fewer worries you’ll have on your wedding day. Get more smart hiring tips here.

Do you tip a wedding caterer?

Tipping 15 percent to 20 percent on a $3,000 catering bill can feel daunting — especially in light of all the other costs of throwing a wedding — but tipping your wedding caterer is standard practice. Be sure to ask your caterer about their specific policies. Many catering companies include gratuity as a line item on their bill. If tipping is not automatically included in your total, a good approach is to tip all the people involved the day of the event rather than paying one lump sum to the catering company. For each server and bartender, you can tip $20-$50, depending on how long they were onsite and whether they did exceptional work. You can also tip the chef; experts suggest $50. It’s also a good idea to tip the catering manager, the point-of-contact person who keeps the catering service running smoothly the day of your wedding, ensures all the food looks beautiful and is plentiful, and resolves any mishaps. Industry pros recommend tipping the catering manager $100-$200. If gratuity is not included and you’re tipping individuals, set aside $200-$500 in cash to be safe.

How much does wedding catering cost per person?

Wedding catering costs will always vary based on the number of guests you’re inviting, the menu you want to serve, and the way the food will be served to your guests. As you interview wedding catering companies, you’ll be presented with a cost per person for various menus. On the low end, wedding catering may cost approximately $15-$18 per person. This would include prepared food only, with no setup or service of any kind. The starting price for a simple buffet meal with minimal service typically averages $22 per person. Opting for the same menu with all organic ingredients could raise your costs to about $33 per person. A moderately upscale menu (finer ingredients, more elaborate presentation) could range from $24 to $34 per person. High-end wedding catering cost truly has no limit. Lobster, filet mignon, specialty seafood, organic ingredients — menu choices like these can boost your cost per person up to $150 and more.

What should you look for in a caterer?

A delicious meal is a critical element of a successful wedding, with happy guests fondly remembering your fabulous wedding food. The right caterer for you will be:

  • Available: Even the best caterer is no good if they aren’t available on your wedding date. Ask early before you get your heart set on someone.
  • Affordable for you: Find a caterer that you can afford. Having a spending plan ahead of time will mean you won’t overspend on food.
  • A good personality fit: Wedding planning is stressful, so work with someone that you can get along with and communicate with easily.
  • Experienced and recommended: Ensure the company has a proven track record with events of your size and the references to back it up.
  • Transparent about money: Steer clear of shady pricing. Find a caterer who is very clear about costs and is happy to talk you through budgets and pricing options.
  • Transparent about food: Find someone who is clear about where they source their food from and where it is prepared.

How do you serve food at a wedding?

Food service at your wedding will affect your catering costs and influence the atmosphere of the reception. Buffet style is more informal; plated meals are a bit fancier; family style encourages sharing. Read about the different food service styles to select your preferred wedding catering choice.

  • Buffet: Caterers can drop off prepared foods for a DIY and budget-friendly buffet option where you set everything up and food is entirely self-service. For a fuller-service buffet, the caterers set up food, oversee the buffet throughout the event, and clean up afterwards. For food only, prices per person might average $16-$18, while a service buffet may start around $20-$22 per person. Adding food stations can increase per-person costs by at least $3-$5.
  • Family style: Servers bring large platters of food to guest tables in courses. It’s less formal (and less expensive) than a plated meal, but more formal and higher-cost than a buffet. You’ll need large tables to accommodate the platters, so plan accordingly when renting furniture for the event.
  • Plated: A plated event is a formal dining experience; waitstaff serve your seated guests for each course, fill their drinks, and attend to them throughout the dinner. A plated dinner is typically the most expensive option for both food and service.
  • Food trucks: Similar to buffets, with food trucks your guests get their own food and bring it to their table. A food truck gives a relaxed and playful vibe to your reception.
  • Cocktail reception: If you don’t want a formal seated dinner, you can opt for a wide assortment of passed appetizers at an extended cocktail hour reception.
