Contacted me 30 minutes after he said he would arrive to say the traffic was bad, but otherwise an awesome job fixing my bathtub faucet. Competitive rates too! I would contact Carl again if I needed a plumber.

We hired Jon to replace our wooden 9 year old crumbling fence that had partially blown down from a storm. We got lots of quotes from big fencing companies and no one could come close to the price that Jon offered us. Jon's quote was about $10 cheaper per linear foot than the other companies could offer! Jon and his crew did a beautiful job on the fence. They even had to deal with connecting the fence to a large tree and they did it seamlessly. I am so happy that we had Jon and his crew come out to do our fence. They were able to finish the project in just three days and I hardly knew they were even there. The best part is, that rather than just take the old wood to the dump, they offered it to a few couples who needed the wood repair their fences/make crafts which is super environmentally friendly! I will definitely hire them in the future to do other projects around our house.

I scheduled a time for David to give me a free estimate to begin with; not only was he on time, he was even 10 minutes early! I hired him to repair water damage in a ceiling then paint the entire ceiling on the first floor of my home. It was finished within about 8 hours. Very Timely, Very Professional. I would certainly recommend his services to anyone. -Corbiere

Very nice job, guys! Kyle showed up on time and was neatly dressed and groomed. He politely explained the issue to me and due to the manufacturer of the faucet and the age he had to go to the parts store. He called me from there to give me the price and then came straight back to finish up. We are very pleased with Kyle and Fixed! Definitely customers again!

I had a leak from the bathtub faucet. At first it was an occasional drip but within a week it was a constant drip that not only drove me crazy but I'm sure was wasting water. I went to Thumbtack as my go-to place and received 3 solid responses from people who had great reviews. I chose Maverick Bellcase because he only had great reviews. They were well earned. He did a terrific job, fixed the leak in no time, kept me informed about his arrival (I have dogs), was friendly and charged me a very fair price. It turns out he does other jobs and I will certainly ask him to help me with them.

Erwin and helper both worked hard in the hot sun all day to complete the project. They showed expertise and kept me informed of the details. My project was the replacement of a rotted staircase on the end of my deck. The replacement quality is so much better that I expect the stair case to last twice as long as the original. Cost, start and finish time were as advertised. I would recommend the company without hesitation.

I had Steven and his son install a new dishwasher. It required some modification to make it fit in the existing opening, but that was no problem for them at all. They performed the job quickly and efficiently and thoroughly cleaned up everything when they were finished. Steve does excellent work and his prices are very fair. We will definitely call him again for any future work.

I had a deck around my hot tub that needed new decking. Bud came out to look at the job and gave me a reasonable price as well as some great suggestions on how to improve upon my vision of what needed to be done. Once the materials arrived, he and his helper arrived a few days later and did a great job upgrading the deck and add a fantastic railing. The also did a great job cleaning up the worksite when they were finished. I'm very happy with the results and would use him again.

We are very pleased with the look of our bathroom. Felipe was easy to work with and did his best to make sure we got the design we wanted. We received quotes from several contractor between $8,500 to $43,000. Felipe quote was not the lowest but in the range we thought was reasonable for our size bathroom. Our project had several set backs which were no ones fault: The tub filler we selected had a design flaw, which required some redesign. The sink drains didn't work the way we hoped and had to order replacements. The tub showed up with a crack and we had to order a replacement. Felipe worked with us through each issue and did his best to guide us to a solution. One of the great things about working with Filipe was the fact he knows some very good subcontractors. The company he recommended to do the show glass, did a great job at half the cost other companies quoted for the same work. Plus we got a lifetime warranty on the glass and workmanship. With every project there's always the 90/10 rule. 90% of the work is straight forward and fairly easy to complete. The rest of the work is more tedious and requires time. There were a couple of areas I thought the work could have been better: The pony wall tile was not cut straight and left ragged grout edges (picture). The retexturing could have been better if not rushed (picture). The caulking around the tub, particularly behind the tub was very poorly done. For the price, I really don't have anything to complain about. This was our first project hiring a contractor to do a project. We learned some important lessons. 1) Create a check list of work items. This will help make sure there are no disagreements on what is and isn't part of the contract. 2) Inspect the work regularly. It's only your fault if the works not done correctly. 3) Don't pay until the work is done to your satisfaction. 4) Get everything in writing including the warranty. I can't say enough how happy we are with the new bathroom. I have other property in Austin and I will use Felipe for future projects.

Spartan was very quick to respond to my request and even came out on a Sunday to do a hydrostatic test required by my insurance company. In all he installed 2 sinks, 2 faucets, a dishwasher, disposal, replaced shut off valves and supply lines. Replaced a gas valve to turn on/off my gas stove/oven, cleaned and replaced a toilet tank and put in all new inerds. Charged me what I thought was a very reasonable price, especially for coming out on such short notice and on a weekend. Evaluated and gave me several options to replace a tub that is leaking. We will most definitely be hiring him to do the tub replacement as soon as my husband and I determine which route we want to take on that job. He and his apprentice, son, were very easy and nice to work with and communicate with. They did a beautiful and professional job and cleaned up the job site very nicely before leaving. Best plumbing experience!

I hired Cool Solutions to replace all of my builder-grade windows with double-pane insulated windows (15 windows). Mike and his crew did a great job. Mike kept me updated with the schedule and statuses throughout the job, and never failed to meet a commitment he made. Even though the work turned out to be more involved than originally planned (the builder did not frame up the windows correctly when the house was built), Mike did not charge me for the additional work his crew had to perform to make it right. And, he took the time to show my how the old windows were installed wrong and demonstrate how he would fix the issue. Mike and his crew conducted themselves as professionals - they were polite, friendly, and cleaned up the jobsite at the end of each day - I wish all contractors would be this easy to work with. Bottom line, if you want the work done right and at a fair price - Give Cool Solutions a call.

Very pleased with the work done by Affordable Flooring. I had a design in mind and they were able to make it happen without hesitation. I had a bad day at work one day and came home and basically took it out on Mike. He was very professional and did not lose his cool with me. It was a misunderstanding on my part. Every worker that came was very pleasant. I had a bad experience with my kitchen remodel so was very observant of things on this bedroom and bathroom remodel. Mike has made sure that even the little things were taken care of. I would definitely use them again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
