Dean paved a trash enclosure for us that was getting muddy every time we had bad weather. We absolutely love the work he did. He included a ramp for the trash cans, which is something we didn't even think to ask for. He also offered to lay stepping stones next to our driveway that matched our house front perfectly. We often walk in the grass to get to the car, so we were experiencing muddy patches there also. Dean exceeded our expectations for service and was able to complete the work on time, not to mention the fact that he gave us an extremely competitive quote. We will be requesting Dean's service for all of our future needs!

After the realtor told us that a spotless house would be critical for the improving our odds for a quick sale of our home, we decided to hire a cleaning service. Living in Cibolo, Tx, I wasn't sure about who did good work. Long ago, I had good experiences with two different cleaning ladies and was charged about $30 an hour for a reasonable cleaning job. But neither of these ladies were available. So I looked at reviews on Thumntack and tried to schedule with one but could not work out a time that worked. Frustrated, I tried the next one on the list, HandySpurs. They returned my call immediately and scheduled for the next day! When Luis and his team arrived, (three altogether), they were right on time. They brought their own supplies and worked for three hours straight. Our house was a two story 4 bedroom with three bathrooms. When they were finished, our house was amazingly clean! They cleaned better than any service I had ever had. Then I was stunned when he wanted to charge me $70! Needless to say, I became a regular customer and loved that I could always schedule appointments by text anytime. I could quickly reschedule a cleaning by text if we had a sudden showing and that flexibility was a pleasure. Well, we sold our house quickly but we kept using HandySpurs. The day after the movers came, Luis and his team came out and cleaned the house so well that all I had to do for the new owners was clean the fridge and oven. All else, walls, windows, base boards, vents, light fixtures, all floors, everything ! was so clean it sparkled. I told Luis that when I got situated in our new home in Kansas I would write about his good work. I'm keeping my promise. I'm not one to write reviews but I sure appreciate reading others so I thought I should contribute both to praise HandySpurs as well as assist future potential consumers. Honestly, I don't know how he makes a profit. He does not overcharge but more than that- he and his team are simply the most hard working cleaning service I have ever used. I hope my glowing but truthful review doesn't cause them too have too many new referrals! Ha! I actually worry about the working TOO hard to please their customers! Hopefully, they will settle down to a group of customers who are happy to pay for excellent work and who appreciate their flexibility, professionalism, as well as friendliness. We gave them a big tip for their final cleaning the day we left but it still wasn't enough. They were simply wonderful.

Manny and his team did an incredible job. My wife and I bought a house last fall and the previous owners attempted (unsuccessfully) to xeriscape the backyard. Picture an unruly expanse of rock, stone, and weed. I was expecting to pay a pretty hefty chunk of change to reverse the damage, but the folks at Manor Grass were unfazed. In just three days, the team got rid of all the rocks, laid down a new base layer of dirt, installed the sod, and even created a french drain along the fence line using some of the old stone to help with drainage. Thanks to Manor Grass, we now have a beautiful, green backyard that is the envy of all our friends and neighbors.

Existing overgrown landscape removal, install new landscape with new rock borders, new plants, mulch and new grass sod with a few sprinkler moves and repairs. Jeremy and his crew did an amazing job. Jeremy is very good at keeping you involved in all parts of the project and let us pick out the plants, stone, etc. He was able to start our job quickly and took the time to get things done right. Our yard looks amazing now and we could not be more satisfied. I highly recommend them for any landscape project.

The team that came out did wonders with our backyard. Our project turned out way better than we imagined and we now have a place to enjoy outback with the kids nearly on a daily basis. The crew was knowledgeable, friendly and worked at a high skill level on many fronts. They built us a new cedar deck with custom poured concrete stepping stones and a gravel seating area with fire pit and L-shaped cedar benches, new sod and drought tolerant plantings. Working with Crafted Outdoor Living was a very enjoyable experience. They were recommended to us by a colleague and we recommended them to you.

This company was awesome! Pete came out to do an estimate (and I got 4 estimates) and was confident, professional and friendly. I was very comfortable with him and chose him to do the job. His assistant Clarissa, followed up with me each day by phone to ensure I was happy and if I needed to make any changes. She was in constant contact with Pete as well and showed up at the job site to lend a hand when needed. Pete and his employees did a fantastic job setting up and installing my 14' x 23' concrete patio. I can't say enough good about them. I will definitely work with them again, this time to build a rock sitting wall and some landscaping. I love their work ethic, and they work very hard, some days 12-15 hours. Hire them!

I’m really glad I found A&J! I had a small - but very heavy! - need for specialty cut Lueders limestone for my front walkway. Abi picked up the stone I needed, cut it off site and delivered/installed it precisely on time/budget. Worth every penny; I’ll definitely use A&J again!

Did an excellent job pressure washing, landscaping, and mowing/trimming the yard. Very professional and gives a fair quote. I had him trim the bushes out front as well as reconfigure the flower beds. He had great choices for plants and perfect black mulch made the white stone pop!

I'm a designer and I have used Windy city/ Stone city granite for all my high end stone designs. They do a wonderful job coordinating with me and my clients on their expectations. Some stones have plenty of character, special veins and hues, you have to have an expert fabricate your dream counters, specially because some materials are more fragile than others, and require special accommodations. I have been using this company for 5 years now, and I would highly recommend to anyone.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
