Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do painters cost?

The national average cost to hire an interior painter ranges between $200-$2,700. Interior painters can tackle everything from complete color makeovers in each of your rooms to touching up an accent wall to painting pieces of furniture. The square footage and complexity of the project, along with the materials needed, are the main factors that will affect cost. Other factors include whether you supply the paint yourself or want the painter to do so, whether you move the furniture and do the prep work or ask them to do it, and whether any repair work is needed on the walls.

Painting the ceiling and the trim will also have an effect on cost. The type of paint you choose can also raise or lower your house painting cost. A gallon of paint may range from $20 to over $100, depending on quality and brand. Ask your painter if they charge per hour or per square foot, and how much you can save by doing prep work (moving furniture, etc.) yourself.

How much should interior painting cost per square foot?

You can expect a 12x12-foot average room with 8-foot ceilings to cost $100 to paint, while a 16x16-foot room with 9-foot ceilings could cost around $175.

To calculate the cost of interior painting per square foot, measure the square footage of wall space and ceiling space of your room. From this, you can estimate the number of gallons of paint needed to cover the wall space and compare it to these figures. You can also ask interior painters near you to provide an estimate before you hire them.

How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house?

Interior house painting costs are calculated on a few key factors. Nationally, interior house painting projects range from $917 (for one room) to $4,893 (for eight rooms). The wide price range indicates how much square footage, paint selection and labor can affect cost. One pro uses a laser to measure each room, subtracting the size of the doors and windows, and then bases the quote on the square footage of the actual surfaces to be painted.

Painters may provide you with savings if you opt to paint your entire home rather than just having one room or an accent wall painted. For example, the average house painting cost for an 8x12 room with 8-foot ceilings is roughly $200, when contractor-grade paint is used. Painting ceilings, baseboards and frames can also affect cost. Pros may charge per linear foot to smooth and paint baseboards.

In one area, pros might charge 50 cents per linear foot to paint baseboards, while pros in another part of the country could charge $1.50 per linear foot for the same task. Painters may charge flat rates for painting door and window frames, with one charging $20-$25 and another $60 per door. Geography and regional costs to do business play a major role in the cost of interior painting. The same painter in a rural region has less to pay in taxes, transportation, insurance and overhead than they would in a major city like New York.

How much do interior painters charge per hour?

You can expect to pay $50 per hour for interior painting. This price will change depending on a number of factors and may range between $30 and $160 per hour. Some factors include the height of the rooms, the complexity of the painting and more.

For an accurate cost estimate, request quotes from local painters and contractors.

How often should you paint your walls?

You should repaint your home interior once every few years, depending on the condition of the current paint.

Paint on walls fades over time, regardless of the room — it could happen in a bedroom, kitchen, dining room, living room or bathroom. However, paint that is exposed to more dirt, particularly flat or matte paint textures, may need repainting more frequently.

Areas of the bathroom or kitchen that routinely get touched may show signs of collecting dirt and grease over time. These would require more frequent painting.

If you're ready to repaint the walls in your home, get free estimates from the best painters near you.

How much value does painting add to a house?

Due to a lack of data available, it’s hard to say whether painting your home’s interior or exterior will increase its value. But there are some important things to keep in mind.

If you're thinking about selling your home, you might want to repaint areas that look especially worn, dull or chipped so your house looks fresh and new to potential buyers. On the other hand, it’s possible some potential buyers will repaint the home upon moving in. So if you have a limited budget, your money (and time) might be better invested in other types of home projects, such as remodeling your bathroom or kitchen, installing new floors or fixing broken appliances

When in doubt, check with your realtor before making a final decision.

How long does it take to paint a room?

The length of time it takes to paint a room varies, depending on a couple of factors. For example, the size of the job makes a difference. With a small bedroom, or with only a wall or two that have to be painted, the job can be done in half a day. Larger jobs take longer.

Also, if there are several different colors being used, the job may take longer, as one may have to dry before the other is applied. A 12-by-12 room with one color may take a morning. With multiple colors, the job may stretch into the afternoon.

Before you hire an interior painter near you, ask them how long it will take to paint the room(s) in your home.

Do you tip painters?

Yes, it’s best practice to tip house painters if you’re pleased with their work. Painters perform detailed, skilled work that can last for many years, if not decades.

Tipping house painters is good etiquette. You can base the tip on the size of the crew, and request the amount to be evenly divided. Or, you can leave a tip based on the size of the job and leave it up to the foreman to decide how it is distributed among the crew. Sometimes — especially with big projects — the painters on the job change during the course of the project, so it’s often customary to leave one tip for the whole job.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Should you wash walls before painting?

Yes, in most cases you’ll want to clean your wall before painters start. Washing walls before painting helps get rid of dirt and grime that could affect how the paint adheres, including primer. You can do this using a wall washer, especially if the top of the wall is hard to reach.

The best way to clean walls is to use a solvent that won’t affect the surface underneath. Some experts recommend using a sponge, warm water and/or a mild detergent or soap. Abrasive washing may remove some of the current pain.

Cleaning painted walls should be done with care. If you’re not comfortable with washing the walls yourself, consider hiring a house cleaner near you.

Words cannot express how I am amazed, excited, and thankful for the interior paint project that Cooper Painting did in my home. Upon completion of the project. I offered a gratuity because I was so impressed with it. "They refused it" I made several attempts, and but they continue to decline. Shocking But True!!!!!! They are the Best, gratuity or not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will continue to use them for the rest of my painting projects.

Could not be happier with the job Manny’s crew did for us on extremely short notice in the Park Cities in Dallas. Contacted him Thursday morning, got a quote that afternoon for painting the entire interior of a house, and the job was done (with repairs where necessary) by Sunday. Would absolutely recommend to anyone needing quality, affordable painting.

Steve did an oustanding job painting the interior of our home. Unlike other companies, Steve was honest that our home only needed one coat of paint to cover the existing color... saving us hundreds! He was on-time, professional, finished the huge project very quickly, and most importantly he did an amazing job. If I ever have to paint another room then I'm calling Steve!

I need a last-minute interior paint job pre move-in (because my first bid from another painter was absurdly high!). Emma and team were quick, thorough, communicative and incredibly tidy. Thank you!

Miguel and his team were very professional and responsive, and they did an excellent job painting the entire interior of my new house! Chantilly Lace by BM is a very bright white and not an easy color to use, but the results were fantastic. He addressed all the concerns I had and made me feel comfortable voicing them throughout the project. I would not hesitate to hire him again for my next paint job!

I'm VERY pleased with his work! It was a fairly small job - walls only, in one room and a hall, but it was changing the walls from deep red to white. He knew the right primer and paint to use so the red wouldn't bleed through. It looks fantastic! He also agreed to add another job at the last minute - sanding, priming, and painting an exterior door (one color for the interior, another for exterior. Also perfect results. They also were meticulous in clean-up after the job. Great communication, very professional and friendly. Would definitely recommend!

My husband and I recently hired Steve to paint the interior walls for our new house. Steve made a visit to our house and we walked through the entire house to examine all the walls and showed us some color options that would look great. He was very thorough and helped us picking. He finished the job in 2 days. We are very happy with the results. We will definitely hire him in the future and refer to family and friends.

Ultimately, the quality expectations I had for the work were not aligned with that of the painters nor the foreman. What they did was worse than my own DIY paint job. I had to walk through multiple times and have them redo many areas before the work was acceptable. Even still, the coverage is uneven on many of the walls and a week later, I see that there is a blue hue coming thorugh on the walls that were painted gray. I felt like I was the foreman, pointing out very obvious issues that they somehow missed. The job I contracted was only for walls and two doors in a new construction home that was finished only months ago - so there were no holes to patch or walls to prep or prime. I did not need any trim, baseboards, ceilings or anything else to be done. The job should have been simple. They ended up getting paint on the floors, trim, baseboards, banister, and ceiling. And the clean up made things worse, particularly on my wood floors as they were using the same rag and using harsh chemicals. I had to stop the painters at one point and provide my own product so they wouldn't strip the finish from my floors, which they did in some spots. They were supposed to cover the floors, but that did not happen as they only had one tarp that was about 2 x 6 that they used for the job - basically, only a small area would be covered at any given point. Because of the paint that ended up on the baseboards, trim and ceiling, they had to repaint many areas in the home using my own paint, which was not replenished like they said they would. They also dragged furniture instead of lifting to move in some areas, resulting in scratches. The most glaring part are the interior doors that they painted on the final day. In the span of 2 hours, they manged to put 3 coats of paint on each door. My smooth door is now textured as the paint was not allowed to dry and the rollers picked up lint and pieces of paint that were then left behind. These doors will have to be sanded and repainted. I really had high hopes for this company but they did not deliver on their five star promise.

William was great! I bought a new house and needed to have the interior (including tall ceilings and stairwells) painted over a 3-day weekend before move-in. William was very quick to respond, came by to do an estimate, and started work the next day. He worked early morning until late at night until the job was done. He made a conscious effort to stick to my deadline. We even added on more areas than we originally planned and he gave us a fair price and was still able to get it done. I was very happy with the quality and value of his work, would definitely recommend and use his services again!

DRT/ Frank responded within an hour of my project posting. We exchanged a couple of emails and met together at my home 2 days later. He spent over an hour with me discussing my ideas and advising me in a direction to economize achieving my goals. He gave me a firm bid on the spot. I was very happy with his bid, agreed to the price, and he actually started the next day with his associate Jason. In only 4-1/2 days they completely painted the interior of my condo, took care of some sheetrock repairs, light carpentry, and cabinet restoration in both the kitchen and bath. They worked very "cleanly" and kept disorder to a minimum. They were both very friendly, personable and professional. I would absolutely hire them again, and look forward to that opportunity. I couldn't be any happier.

DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE! I had Edward to over to my apartment last week to have an estimate done. English is clearly his second language but we were able to muddle through his numbers because of his official interior painting quote. All I wanted done was the colored walls to be primed for my move out. I told him it would be Monday or Tuesday of this week and he said either would work. Last Friday I messaged him through the thumbtack app (as that is how he was communicating up to this point) to find out which day would work and I told him Tuesday was my preference... no response. Last Saturday I massaged him again within the app... no response Last Sunday I messaged him AND called him on the number provided on the quote sheet. I could tell that the voicemail greeting was him so I left the same message I'd been sending to him via the app. No response Yesterday (Monday I repeated my efforts from Sunday... no response Today is Tuesday and out of sheer hope, I have been sitting in a vacant apartment since 8am (it's now 3:30pm- thank God for Mifi's and working remotely)... no show. I have been relying on him (ever since the initial quote where we shook hands and agreed to use their service) and he disappeared. This company is a joke
