From the very beginning - working with Eric was amazing. I had been shopping around for other attorneys and Eric was the first to actually call me and talk to me - and that was the same night that I posted on Thumbtack. Previously I had only spoken with paralegals and what seemed like sales people for big firms. It was such a huge relief to actually speak with an actual attorney. Going with Eric was the best decision I could have made. He basically held my hand and walked me through the entire process. He told me what I needed to do and when to do it - and because of that, and his hard work, we were able to get the best outcome I needed for my case. Going through this whole legal process can be scary and overwhelming, but I felt so much better knowing that I had Eric in my corner. It's almost impossible to articulate how thankful I am for everything he did for me.

I have had the pleasure of working with John Hindera and his secretary Rebecca Callahan over the past year. John has been handling a rather tricky custody matter, regarding my precious 3-year old daughter, and I could not be more pleased or satisfied with the results he has gotten for me. John is a former law professor from Texas Tech University, and his knowledge of Texas law, in all areas, is absolutely astounding. Both John and his secretary Rebecca conduct themselves with a very high level of professionalism. You never have to worry about dealing with a large firm and getting lost in the shuffle because they both treat each and every client with the upmost respect, regard, and priority. John has the type of demeanor that is all business and he does very, very well in the courtroom. I cannot say enough about the Hindera Law Firm as I am an extremely happy and satisfied client and will continue to use John and his firm for any and all needs in the future.

I had a fantastic divorce experience. Mr. Bargas and Mr. Baker were both extremely pleasant to work with and very communicative. Email response time was superb. All my questions and concerns were answered promptly and I was never made to feel like I was wasting their time - rather in person meetings were offered if needed to ensure that I was fully comfortable with the proceedings. My divorce was amicable and uncontested and Mr. Bargas offered a competitive rate that I was able to afford. The quality of representation vastly exceeding what I believe I could have found elsewhere for a similar price-point based on interviews I held with other firms. Mr. Bargas and Mr. Baker were both very professional, yet had a very easy to work with personality and good sense of humor. I appreciated Mr. Bargas' direct questions during the the interview, as he was not looking to waste his time nor mine and wanted to get to the heart of the case. His work on my case was similarly efficient, but he was relatable and approachable. On the day of my hearing, Mr. Baker was at court well before our time to meet (and I showed up early) with all the paperwork turned in and ready to go. Court began at 9am and we walked out of the building before 9:30am. Everything was filed in a very timely fashion, I hired them on October 10th and was divorced by December 19th. You can't ask for much more than that! I would absolutely recommend Mr. Bargas and his law firm AUSTINLAWYER4YOU.COM without hesitation. 5 stars.

Ryan is a professional attorney who gets straight down to business. Going over my prenuptial agreement, he explained everything to me without making feel inferior. He listened to every detail I wanted in the agreement and made sure that it was in my favor if not fair. I feel a strong sense of trust with Ryan as my attorney. He has great interpersonal skills in which makes me feel comfortable when talking with him.

I found Jacki to be a diligent, hardworking and highly competent attorney who was also very personable and a pleasure to work with. She provided very thoughtful legal review and often identified legal issues that other lawyers missed, which could have been costly to the business. I enjoyed discussing technology matters with Jacki. She was always interested in learning more about the business side of technology and was very happy to help me better understand why certain legal issues, like warranties, indemnities and licensing rights, matter more than others. She had a way of making complicated legal concepts simple. I really appreciated her teaching style because, the longer that she and I worked together, the better I became at negotiating deals. It was clear to me that Jacki has a passion for both technology and the practice of law. Jacki earned my respect with her strong work ethic and her commitment to excellence. She is trustworthy and dependable and did a great job for me during my tenure at the company. I can give Jacki my highest recommendation.

Very pleased with this law firm! We were lost and confused on finding the right firm for us, so we relied on our Christian family at church and another member was kind enough to refer us. Great experience from start till end. Very easy and accessible always knew what was going on and well informed at all times. A+ service and results.

My family - my ex-husband, three children, and myself - moved here from the Northeast a couple years ago. After 15 years and raising our family far from here, we moved to Texas to be closer to my ex-husband's family. He left only months later and began a new family immediately. Being alone and having started a job within only days of him leaving was difficult, of course. I needed help and because my children were at that point considered residents of Texas, I couldn't legally leave with them. I was lost only temporarily. I spoke with a few people, and looked at varying options as far as legal representation. The day I met Lori Watson, was the day everything turned around. All of the difficulty seemed to have lessened. I knew my children and I would be fine and we were, and we are. I got everything in my proceedings that Lori told me I would. She communicated consistently, and though she had many other cases, I knew when I had a question, or needed advice, she was not far. She returned every call, every email, and with great speed. The sense of independence and control that I was hoping to feel and to take with me through such a horrible ordeal, Lori helped me to maintain, and it took me and my children through it, almost completely unscathed. My divorce was finalized just the beginning of this year, and for Mother's Day, my oldest daughter made me a card that told me not just that she and her siblings love me, but that I am the strongest person they know and they will grow to be strong because of me. I know my own level of strength and independence, but when your world suddenly seems to start crumbling, fear and insecurity are easily overwhelming. Lori helped me to get through that time, and to maintain what prompted those words from my daughter. I can't thank Lori enough. - Meredith

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does an immigration attorney do?

Immigration lawyers help their clients through all phases of the immigration process. Experts on immigration law, they are legally qualified to represent U.S. citizens, permanent residents or undocumented immigrants. Immigration lawyers also provide assistance to visitors here on student, work or travel visas, and can represent clients who may have an expired visa or who have overstayed their visa.

You can hire an immigration lawyer to assist you with petitioning for renewing a permanent resident or green card, navigating the naturalization process, submitting an employee-based petition for a work visa, filing a petition for a family member, or representing you or a loved one who is facing detention or deportation, as well as replacing, extending or changing a current visa, green card or work permit. The immigration process is highly complex, with multiple hearings, paperwork and requirements. Hiring a legal expert to represent you can help you make your best effort in the process. When researching immigration lawyers, it is very important to verify their qualifications and find a reputable attorney. Read reviews and verify that the immigration lawyer is licensed by your state before paying any fees.

How do you find a good real estate lawyer?

If buying or selling property feels overwhelming and the thought of finding a good real estate lawyer seems daunting, you’re in luck. There are some simple steps to follow for finding a trustworthy, affordable real estate lawyer to help with your property and legal needs.

  • Determine what kind of real estate lawyer you need. Many states require a real estate attorney to handle sale closing documents. For more complex matters such as a real estate deal gone awry or foreclosure, you’ll want to find an attorney who has successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Look for online reviews of real estate lawyers in your area. Verify that they have proven experience closing or winning cases like yours and that they are in good standing with the state bar association.
  • Choose two or three lawyers to interview. Many offer a free consultation to learn about your case and provide information about rates. For standard real estate closing services, in-depth interviewing might not be necessary.
  • Ask about their rates and whether they charge by the hour or provide services for a flat fee. Ask whether a retainer is required, and what the total bill should be for a case like yours.
  • Ask for a write-up of the services that will be covered by the projected costs.
  • Make sure you like the real estate agent and they treat you with respect. Confirm whether they or another person will be working on your case and make sure you’re comfortable with all members of their team.
  • Pay the retainer and hire your lawyer.

What is a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer fights on your behalf if you’ve been injured physically, psychologically, economically or in reputation. This injury may be the result of neglect or malicious intent of another person, or it could be at the hands of a business, government or other entity. Personal injury lawyers specialize in tort law, which is the law of civil wrongs like car accidents, company wrongdoing, unlawful imprisonment and more.

To become qualified to be a personal injury lawyer in the United States, a person must earn a bachelor’s degree, followed by a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from a law school. Most states then require the person to pass the bar exam to become licensed to practice law. Unlike many attorneys who require a retainer, personal injury lawyers often work on contingency fees. This means that in lieu of payment upfront, they receive an agreed-upon percentage of the settlement in case of a win.

What does a real estate lawyer do?

A real estate lawyer represents their client’s best interest in all matters related to the sale, purchase and ownership of real estate. They are experts in real estate law. In states that require a real estate lawyer to close home sales, the lawyer must review and finalize all documents before the deal can be legally completed. Real estate lawyers also help clients legally protect their rights when entering, exiting or renegotiating a real estate deal. You can hire a real estate lawyer as an individual or as a business. A real estate lawyer can help with negotiation, addressing mortgage fraud, managing foreclosures and bankruptcy, transfers of titles and deeds, property ownership disputes, zoning issues, creating a co-ownership contract for joint purchase of a property, and much more. Real estate lawyers can also protect you from issues that result when a known problem was not properly disclosed by the previous owner. Overall, real estate lawyers are an added cost when it comes to buying and selling property, but they also ensure your best interests are met, and that you and the people you are doing business with comply with the law.

What should you look for in a personal injury lawyer?

A personal injury lawyer will advocate for your legal rights if you’ve been hurt in an accident at work or in daily life, have suffered from medical malpractice, or are struggling to have your insurance carrier cover your needs. It may be helpful to talk with two or three lawyers before selecting one. When looking for a personal injury lawyer, research their reviews and make sure former clients have had good experiences with them. Next, make sure the personal injury lawyer has experience and proven success winning cases similar to yours. Confirm that the lawyer is licensed to provide services in your state. When you find a qualified personal injury lawyer with whom you want to work, freely discuss payment and fees before any work begins. Most lawyers offer a free consultation to learn what your case is about and explain their rates. Personal injury attorneys typically receive a percentage of your settlement (called a contingency fee), so they are paid after the trial or case is complete. Keep in mind that some attorneys have fees that you must pay even if you don’t win your trial. It’s important to understand these details before work begins so you don’t have any unhappy surprises later. Lastly, it’s wise to choose a personal injury lawyer that you have confidence in and with whom you can communicate openly and honestly.
