Dr. Dryk was instrumental in helping me complete my master's capstone to complete the degree. She was very thorough in identifying areas where the writing could be improved as well as correcting grammatical errors in a very long document. Thank you very much!

Hiring April to update my resume' was a GREAT decision. She took my experience already reflected on my resume', in addition to my feedback, and turned it into a work of art! I didn't have a cover letter and she was proactive in asking if I needed or wanted one. Of course, after seeing my new resume', I quickly said "yes". Again, she did not disappoint. My cover letter (from scratch) put onto paper what I had in my head, but just couldn't put it in writing. I highly recommend hiring April if you need any type of resume' service! Hopefully, I won't need another resume' update, but if I do, I'm using April again for sure!

Ken at New Wave Resumes made my dreaded resume update an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I just relocated to Austin and needed a new polished resume to get started here. I contacted four other Resume Services before I found Ken, when we spoke on the phone he shared with me his background and invaluable experience as a recruiter, as well as his vision on what hiring coordinators are looking for in a resume these days. He said his work wasn't the old "Cookie Cutter" resume format but that he would create more of a "Stand Out" document that would capture attention right away - and he hit a homerun with mine! I am so pleased with what he has done that I am now entering into my job search with much more confidence than I had a couple weeks ago. Ken has made me look extremely professional and uniquely experienced as well as a very well-rounded individual. He made me look good! Goal achieved. While I still haven't heard back from two of the other resume services, the one person I did get in touch with was somewhat cold and detached and didn't ease any of the dread I had been feeling about completing this task. Ken took it and ran with it, his first draft was near perfection and after a couple small tweaks it was done. I experienced a huge sense of relief and really felt like he had my back on this one. I have absolutely no hesitation in recommending him to anyone who is looking for a fresh and professional way to present yourself out there. His resume writing is worth every penny and he has said he will help me tweak it anytime at no charge, it's all a part of the great service you too will receive.

Petrena and I just started working together in 2016. So far so good. Her organization and approach will be a key asset to this adventure of writing a book. Her experience with previous publishing was a key facet in my decision. I am looking forward to the ride.

Emily tutored my 7th and 10th grade sons in reading comprehension and writing. She did an outstanding job, she was very patient with both boys, especially the 7th grader that hates to read. Their grades improved significantly. She started tutoring both boys together only once a week but we increased to twice a week, each of them individually for 90 minutes. If they had special assignments or reports to write, Emily made herself available to work with them above their regular tutoring sessions. She was always very professional and a joy to have around. She got to know the boys and worked with them based on their interests - she is an amazing tutor. I would highly recommend her.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

  • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
  • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
  • Expertise in your target area.
  • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

  • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
  • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.
