Mike did a wonderful job installing my replacement kitchen sink, faucet, and garbage disposal. Despite obstacles around new position of drain, change in number of drains, and length of disposal cord, Mike made it all work. I am so thankful for his hard work.

I had an exterior door repair. It was not shutting correctly. Robert kept in communication with me by text and told me exactly when he would arrive and that he would be a couple minutes late. He worked on the door and got it shut perfectly, preventing my alarm from going off accidentally! I'm very happy. His estimate was fair and in line with other quotes. Thank you.

He was willing to go the extra mile to make sure I was 100% pleased with the work. I would recommend him in a heartbeat.

If you need a fence repaired or replaced... don't go to a fence installation contractor. You will pay double the price. I contacted a number of contractors for repair of our boundary fence. Fully half didn't bother responding to my voice mail - I assume the job was too small. Of the four that actually responded, three were fence installation contractors and one was fence repair - Al. I could tell from the quote he sent me, he knew his business. There was no guessing. He quoted in linear feet and per post. When asked, he came out immediately to review the job and confirm the price and started working the next day. We were so pleased with his work quality, work ethic, and knowledge that we expanded (doubled) the work. He was able to do it all in two days. We are planning on having him come back to repair another part of the fence soon. Don't waste your time... hire Al for your fence repairs and replacements. He loves what he does, it shows, and you will not regret it.

Mario and Sara demolished an outdoor shed, sanded and stained a deck, repaired sheetrock and cleared out brush around our lake house. They are wonderful people who are very hardworking, honest and fair. We highly recommend them and would not hesitate to use their services again in the future.

Dry wall repair, patching, texturing, painting. We recently moved into a new home and had custom closet built. The company took out the parts installed by the builder, but does not offer dry wall repair service. I hired Angel out of 4 companies that did estimate for the drywall repair. Angel offered a reasonable price that was comparable to others. He was accountable, reliable, sincere, and did an excellent job. He showed and updated me on his progress while he was repairing the dry walls. I would definitely hire him again if we need a handyman in the future.

I didn't have the budget to replace 5 windows as other window vendors told me was my only option. My windows were either very difficult to open, or would just not stay open. Manny looked at them and determined I could fix them by replacing the balancers. The job was quick and now I have five working windows even my kids can open. I'm very happy with the service. Manny is the only window professional I will contact if I ever need a window repair or replacement in the future.

I needed a repair/maintenance type job done on the exterior of my house, and Ruben not only gave me a great price and did great work, but also fit me into his schedule two days earlier than the date we had originally planned. He'll be the first person I call the next time I need a home-related project or repair done.

Working with Mario and his contractor Mike was extremely satisfying. Both Mario and Mike were outstandingly professional, eager to please the customer, hard working and very flexible with my schedule. Not only did I receive outstanding workmanship but I gained two friends. Mario is a very compassionate and friendly man so much so he offered a job to a good friend of mine who was down on his luck and thanks to Mario he is now learning a new profession. I would recommend him to anyone anytime and any job! I just want to add the work that he accomplished as the original bid was for refinishing and due to the extent of the damage he ended up having to pretty much remodel the entire kitchen. He created handcrafted cabinets drawers and shelves to my standard and expectations as well as repaired and window ledge that was damaged and also painted the entire kitchen and repaired some tile work all within the budget given by the insurance company.

Chris Fischer was a pleasure to work with and I would use his services again in a heartbeat. I had several minor home repairs (oven, disposal, kitchen faucet, microwave) that he thoroughly diagnosed, explained the costs, how long it would take to order parts, and repair them. His rates are very reasonable and his quality & professionalism are second-to-none!

Kyle was so great to work with. He has a great partner in Krystal and they run a very professional and detail oriented business. They upgraded the trim around all of the windows and doors in my 3000+ sq foot home and added base board trim as well. They were great to work with and would recommend them (and have) to anyone needing window/door installation and all finished carpentry trim work.

Lance did a 6-foot privacy fence repair for us as well as building a small garden fence around our garden. He was very quick to respond and was able to come out for an estimate very quickly. He offered the estimate on-site and the only change in the cost was one extra 4x4 needed for the garden fence, totally reasonable. He was able to get the job done very quickly and his staff was on-time, friendly, and even very accommodating to our dogs that were in their work space from time to time. Highly recommend Lance for any project!

Nick and Zach did our bathroom backsplash, replaced a water damaged bathroom window sill, installed crown moulding in our bath and office, and repaired some damaged attic trusses. They did a great job on everything, especially the crown moulding. In fact I should probably have them come back and re-do all of the crown moulding that I did myself downstairs, since it is not nearly to their level of craftsmanship.

Bob did great work for me. I had 3 small projects-a new linen closet door, repair and replace new sliders on a dresser, and hang new solid core doors in the house-and he completed them in one afternoon. Bob did take the dresser with him when we first met so he could work on that in his shop. We did have a bit of difficulty connecting on the "when to finish" time, but he worked it out in the end. One suggestion I do have: please be a bit more conscientious at to what you are tracking in and around the house. My husband and I had some clean up to do from what they left. Even with that though, I'm so super happy with the finished product of all three jobs.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
