Mike & his team did an amazing job on my townhouse small backyard project - which involved tree trimming, gravel & sod elements, and general clean up of yard. It only took one day for Lone Star Lawn Care to respond to my initial project request online. All in all, the project spanned ~2 weeks to complete from the beginning of my request on Thumbtack to end. I will definitely use their services again and have already recommended to friends.

Manny responded immediately to my job inquiry and followed up with an email the next day. He was able to come out and give me an estimate the same day I contacted him. The estimate was very reasonable to trim my 4 very large pecan trees. His work was fast and efficient. He was very personable, knowledgeable and gave us great tips on how to maintain our pecans. I will definitely use Manny again for any tree maintenance needs.

Mario was extremely responsive, has reasonable rates, and provided service next day. We asked him back for additional yard work and loved the results. In all he mowed/edged, trimmed trees, shaped bushes, and cleaned out badly weeded beds. Yard looks great!

We hired Jon to replace our wooden 9 year old crumbling fence that had partially blown down from a storm. We got lots of quotes from big fencing companies and no one could come close to the price that Jon offered us. Jon's quote was about $10 cheaper per linear foot than the other companies could offer! Jon and his crew did a beautiful job on the fence. They even had to deal with connecting the fence to a large tree and they did it seamlessly. I am so happy that we had Jon and his crew come out to do our fence. They were able to finish the project in just three days and I hardly knew they were even there. The best part is, that rather than just take the old wood to the dump, they offered it to a few couples who needed the wood repair their fences/make crafts which is super environmentally friendly! I will definitely hire them in the future to do other projects around our house.

Gave us the lowest estimate out of several tree service companies. Did a professional job in a timely manner. And even sent a representative by several days later to check the job and ensure our satisfaction.

Jose had a big job. My neighbor and I had a huge Live Oak between our houses. It had three different trunks from the ground up. One of those trunks was hitting my roof up by the peek and had to come out before it damaged my house. This tree was about 35 - 40 feet high. Two other trunks were hanging over my neighbors house and also had to come out. These trunks were of similar size. This was a very touchy job as it was between two houses and the houses are only about 15 feet apart. He had to take the trees down piece by piece and did a fabulous job. Very profession and cleaned up the mess afterwards. Great job!! Next time I need a job done I will be calling Ramos Services.

This company was wonderful. They showed up at the discussed time ready to work. Introduced themselves. Had great knowledge of the project. The owners even stopped by and checked in with us, so friendly. Taking a tree down is never a pleasant experience, but they made it smooth and efficient. I will be hiring them again. I will also recommend them to my friends.

Super work on a very quick turnaround, and the price for the work was phenomenal. The guys did the job in two phases, and they were fast and thorough, and came back the second time to make sure the work of our tree removal and stump grinding was done brilliantly. WILL work with again! (We have more stumps in the back!)

I highly recommend Chico's TLC for any tree or landscaping work - he really knows his stuff and pays attention to what you are hoping to achieve. I contacted Mr. Kirby through this web site and he came out to my house the same day to see what needed to be done and did the work the next day. He cut a tree off of a fence and replaced the sections of the fence that were bad. He gave himself several days to do the job, but it only took one day. He did exactly what I asked and did a very good job.

I had a pile of brush and tree trimmings I needed removed. Got connected with Hairy Beaver who gave me a great price AND were able to fit me on their schedule the next morning. They arrived at the agreed time with a friendly crew and got right to work. The took care of the pile quick and easy and I couldn't be happier with their service, professionalism and attitude. I'll definitely look to them for my next tree trimming project and would recommend to anyone in need of the same.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
