Lloyd is amazing! I’m convinced he can literally do anything. We hired him to hang a wall gallery of 9 framed photos. I had a vision of what I wanted, am a bit of a perfectionist (especially when it comes to small details), and he far exceeded what we expected. He took the time to listen to what we wanted and offered suggestions on how our project would look the best in the space we had to work with. Lloyd is an experienced professional who really knows what he’s doing. He takes his time and really listens to what his client is envisioning. He’s precise and won’t finish a job until you’re completely satisfied. We are thrilled to have met Lloyd and already know we’ll hire him again for several other home projects.

Cris with Hawk was fantastic!! This is my first time using the Thumbtack app and was a little hesitant at first. We had to put in custom shelves in our office closet space - not an entirely huge project (just a day and half), but I wanted it done right. He was very quick to respond. He came to our house to check out the project, gave us ideas, and offered a very reasonable price. He had excellent reviews so it made the decision easier. Cris was very professional and we are extremely happy with job. We will definitely use him again and recommend him to our friends!

Peter did a great job with my pet securing fence project. It turned out to be a larger, more time consuming project that either of us expected. We agreed on a new price and the job was completed in a timely manner. I am extremely happy with the results. It looks clean and professional and already proved to be successful. The pups are no longer able to crawl under my fence.

Amanda and Charles were worth every penny. Amanda was very professional and thorough in her painting and paid attention to the tiniest of details making our newly painted living room truly shine. After spending an entire day painting the two-story room, she came back in an instant to fix some small blemishes that we noticed. I can’t rant and rave about the experience enough. To top it off, her husband even helped us refasten the gutter to the side of our house! These two will be our go-to team for painting and handyman needs. We were very, very impressed."

Henry did an amazing job. We hired him to install a window in our kitchen. He was professional, on time and explained his method of installation before he started. The window installed looks great and is very well situated in the space given. We definitely recommend Henry if you are looking for precise and professional work.

Brian helped me move from storage space to another much further away. He quoted one hour and that is what it took. I will be using Brian again as I prepare to move to Arizona.

I rated him 5 stars due to the lack of there being a 6 star option! I have a 60 yr old house that was wired by the owner, so to say it was a mess is an under statement. While conducting some renovations to the house, I lost power to my lights. Eric crawled around in my attic on a 90+ degree day, through my 60 yr old blow-in insulation with no hesitation. He clearly explained to me what needed to be done, and advised against necessary extra work! Even though he and I are the same age he referred to me as Sir every time we spoke. He is a true professional and an exemplary representative of his profession. I highly recommend his service to anyone!

LOVED EVERYTHING about working with this company and Mr. Kaster. He was prompt, professional, courteous and went above and beyond what I asked him to do. I contacted him for some urgent repairs and he made sure to fit me into his busy schedule to help me. He completed my request the day after I contacted him and did not leave until the job was completed. My family and I were extremely impressed and will definitely use this company again. AMAZING, PROFESSIONAL company with great quality work and I highly recommend this company to everyone. You will not be disappointed. I would give 10 stars, but there's only five. 10 star company!

Updated an old backyard patio. The existing original patio had a low ceiling and was not convenient for relaxing with family and friends. This job included adding a new deck, raising the ceiling and adding a gabled roof to match the house. All electric work was done well and the finished patio was painted to match the house. The old patio was completely removed. The new space provides an atmosphere perfect for relaxing or entertaining. As far as what could have been done better, there really is nothing to report as this job was done on schedule and met the intent of the design.

Jonathan helped us finish out a storage room for use as extra space for our rental. He did a great job, and paid attention to detail. He was always on time, and communicated with us when he had questions or concerns with our project. He painted, sprayed insulation, installed a door with a deadbolt, and laid flooring. We would recommend him to anyone requiring his services.

We hired SA Building & Remodeling to add a bathroom in a part of our unfinished attic adjoining a finished room. After interviewing several contractors, we hired Rudy. We were impressed with his professionalism, knowledge of the remodeling business, his reasonable price for the job and good reviews from previous customers. We were not disappointed. He delivered on time a beautifully appointed and quality constructed bathroom. Our goal was to build a room addition that didn't look like a room addition . We wanted it to look like it's always been part of the house. This was especially challenging, since we had a small area to work with and had to work around slanted roof beams, a/c ductwork, and incompatible existing plumbing. Out of a 10'x13' space, Rudy was able to carve out a bathroom and a hallway leading to the attic on one end and the finished room on the other. Every inch counted in such a small space to fit in a large vanity, tub, toilet, linen closet and clothes closet, and Rudy expertly worked around any lack of space problems that arose and made everything fit beautifully. He showed patience and diligence in finding solutions and wouldn't rest until I was happy. I'm amazed at how spacious and beautiful our new bathroom looks. Rudy's a perfectionist with passion for his work and pride in the finished product. I wholeheartedly recommend SA Building & Remodeling for your home addition or remodel.

The quality of work was exceptional, definitely worth more than the amazing price he gave me. It was easy to communicate the different ideas I had of what I wanted done and he was able to bring it to life. I definitely got more for my money! Mr. Lopez was very knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile to make my difficult request work within my budget and space allowed. I would defiantly recommend Texas Alpha Renovations to anyone looking for quality work at a great price! I will be using his services on all my future renovation projects!

Steve went above and beyond with our job. The seller did not center the light fixtures when they initially installed them. Steve went in and positioned them correctly by crawling through the attic. We couldn't be more pleased! Steve's rates are great and we will always use him going forward.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
