Where do I start? Texas Hillc Country was one of the best tree services we ever hired. We had a hackberry tree fall down and they sensed an urgency before we did. Ed had 5 of those trees and a couple more had root rite. Jeff Jones the owner was very attentive and tmrecinmebded to do addditonal tree services on top of his estimates. We agreed on the estimates and they came out to take out 5 hackberry trees, trim the live oaks in the front and the sago palms plus Texas Mountain Laurel. He stayed in touch during the entire process and followed up quickly. We love the work him and his crew did. No highly recommend him. We look forward in hiring him again.

I called Thumbtack and immediately received a phone call back from a gentleman named Gilbert who owns Lunas Tree Services who explained to me that he was returning my call. Gilbert came by my residence gave me an estimate and I accepted. Lunas Tress Services came out the following day and within 2 hours all of my 10 trees were chopped, cut and pruned. The crew was very neat and picked up all branches and limbs. The crew were very neat with their work and left with no signs of trees being cut. I am so excited on how neat and cleaned the yard looks. that I have given the name and phone # to several friends who really liked what they saw.. I well definitely be calling Lunas Tree Services for future work.

Just finished trimming my trees and had a large pile of branches that I needed hauled off. I gave Eddie a call and he was there the next morning to pick them up. Fast, courteous, fairly priced and professional experience. He was even sure to rake the leaves that fell from the trimmings before he left. I would definitely hire him again.

I would recommend Apeks to anyone needing tree and lawn care services. Ruben and his crew are in the process of doing a fantastic job with my front yard. All the work is done very professionally. After they finish trimming and sawing...nothing is left behind but a neat yard!

Sergio and his crew were phenomenal, they were courteous, on time, and went above and beyond my expectations for "trimming" my trees. I've given them a recommendation at work for anyone looking for tree trimming services and would hire them again in a heartbeat if I needed that again.

We had two palm trees removed. Girl with a Thumb is one of the best businesses we have hired in six years of owning our home. They were professional, punctual, and keep us informed throughout the process. We received pictures of the progress they made throughout the two day removal. They also saw a stump from a previous removal that needed additional grinding and took care of it without asking for additional compensation. However, we gave additional compensation to show our appreciation. The work site was also cleaned daily.

Carlos came out to give us a quote on having some large trees removed from our property. He was very professional and discussed with us what he would need to do and the cost. After several quotes, we chose to go with someone who was a little bit cheaper than the quote we were given by Carlos. BIG mistake. The other company never showed up and wouldn't respond to any attempts I made to contact him. I got in touch with Carlos that afternoon, after it was clear the other company was not worthwhile, and he was able to schedule to come out the next morning. Carlos and his crew were very professional and did an excellent job of taking out two very large, very difficult trees. When they weren't able to finish Saturday, they cleaned up and blocked off what they had left and returned the next morning to knock it out. I appreciate their hard work, attention to detail, and professionalism and can't recommend them enough!

Lisa and Jeff did a great job trimming the low branches of our tree. It just took a few swipes of Jeff's chainsaw and the job was pretty much done. They also cleaned up and hauled away all the branches. A fair price for a great job, and we will definitely be calling on them again.

David was hired to operate a Bobcat for clearing silt from my dry creek bed. He accomplished the work in half the time compared to another bidder. The work included the lifting, movement, then repositioning of a foot bridge. Very pleased with the end result. Because of the results, David continued the next day downing dead trees, clearing cedar trees and saplings, moving to a central location for chipping the following day. Operation of the Bobcat grappler made this job much more efficient. Final result was large pile of salvaged cedar posts and cedar mulch. Good results, pleasant to work with, cost effective.

I had a great experience with Certified Tree Care! I was able to get an estimate on the work right away and was scheduled quickly. The crew members were all very nice. When they were all finished, they cleaned up everything, not a branch or any debris left behind! I feel like I got real value for my money, not only was the work affordable, but they did a fantastic job!

Rose Services did an AMAZING job on a last minute, big yard I needed mowed and weedeated. I had never been a customer, and they were kind enough to work me in on short notice. Communication was thorough and personable, they kept me up to date on arrival times and the payment process. I had an unusual situation with a rental home and they worked with me to get everything taken care of. Even sent me pictures of the finished work. They went above and beyond to do a great job! Despite being shorthanded the morning of my job, they still arrived punctually and stayed in communication. There were a couple of lower small branches that had sprouted on a few trees, and they took care of those without me even mentioning it. They were wonderful to work with, seem like genuinely good, family oriented people, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to anyone needing a lawn service performed. Thanks again!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
