Plumber Sosa made my job 1st priority. He arrived ready to work and resolved the problem fast. He's price was reasonable and he gave good advise on what to expect next. The valve in the hot-water heater was ruined and he replaced the valve and it worked. I didn't have any hot-water so after he left I did have hot-water. So the problem was taken care of...no problem! Quite economical.

I discovered this service by mistake, but so glad I did. I had many jobs to be done. Tile flooring, shower floor redone, replace a vanity, two toilets, stretched carpet, replace a bathroom faucet and change out a light over the vanity. Replace a kitchen faucet with an added hot water dispenser. Gabriel was also kind enough to give me important cleaning tips that I'll use from now on. Gabriel is a exceptionally nice man, clean in appearance and cleans up each and every work day. I appreciated that I never had a mess. I will definitely have more jobs and definitely call VG Cleaning and Remodeling Services again and again.

We had a different plumber come look at our water heater after the hot water in our house lost pressure. They said there was nothing wrong with the hot water heater and that we had a blockage in our pipes and they would call us back. After not calling us back for 4 days (and thank heavens they didn't), we called Martin and asked him to come out and assess our problem. He came out same day we called him, found the problem that was with the hot water heater (no blockage in the pipes), and fixed it all in about a half hours time. He was very courteous, professional, and knowledgeable. And what he charges is more than fair, great rates. We will definitely be calling Martin in the future if we have further plumbing needs!

Mauricio fixed a leak in a washing machine I purchased off of Craigs List. He arrived on time. He accurately diagnosed the problem. The nozzle that fills the tank with water was 80 percent blocked with calcium deposits and it was forcing water out through the opening that held a sensor. He cleaned the nozzle and cleared the calcium out with vinegar I had on hand. He fashioned a new gasket from some double-sided tape that I had on hand. I had to wait 24 hours before testing it. I just finished testing the fix and my problem has been resolved. He charged me an $80 labor/service call, which was within the original quoted price. Overall I was very pleased.

I hereby proclaim Rene Burrola "The Magic Man." After another Thumbtack service provider came and proclaimed my 20-year-old water heater officially dead - even after attempting all possible repairs - and failing to close the deal on installing a new one, Platinum IAQ Specialist Inc. came along and fixed the problem with a wave of his magic wand. Loved his attitude from the moment he uttered something to the effect of "ain't nothing can't be fixed." He had the tricky pilot on my tank re-lit and pumping hot water in less time than his competitor could quote me a price on a replacement unit, which was going to cost me $730. Oh, and by the way, I told them to go ahead and deliver, but they failed to call back. Meantime, Magic Man Rene ran to my rescue. It was the most pleasant service call in my five years of home ownership. And to think Rene said servicing hot-water heaters is secondary to his AC/Heating expertise. He said he also services most major appliances, and can handle plumbing duties, too. I know who I'll call first next time I need most things done around this house - Rene Borrola, The Magic Man.

Price should not always be the final deciding factor when you have the right expertise aligned to deliver excellence the first time! Yes, it is more uncommon for one to place cost of services secondary these days, but I'd like to challenge you to think differently for a moment. Please allow me to share with you why: I hired Juan with Silver & Black Electric Services to install electrical for my hot tub. To start, my hot tub was not delivered in accordance to the expected timeline. This made coordinating the electrical hookup in advance complicated and frustrating. From the time I began communication with Juan is where complication and frustration transformed into action and commitment! Previously, I had requested quotes a couple weeks back. Silver & Black Electric Services provided me a reasonable bid up front, but it was not the first I investigated further. I sought a few other opinions and was indifferent regarding their inspection of the scope of work on-site, planning, supplies, scheduling appointment returns, and cost. When my hot tub finally did arrive, it was impossible to get anyone to engage timely. Typical how these things always seems to actually work in reality? Your not alone! Pay attention! This is where Juan with Silver & Black took the lead! Upon my first inquiry the evening before the install, I inquired on availability from Silver & Black Electric Services via Thumbtack App built-in Chat. Juan was impressive with his fast turnaround offering me reasonable install window options -- so much so that he eventually worked with me one-off to make accommodating arrangements with my rather complex scheduling requirements. As most electricians would want to do, Juan requested an on-site inspection. I informed him of some of my limitations and he worked with me to gather the information he needed to assess the job, provide me feedback, and coordinate the timeframe. Juan asked the right questions and I appreciated that as it demonstrated to me he was sincerely concerned about meeting my objectives and that he would be delivering with accuracy. While there was some variance in his actual start time, I was impressed with Juan's action-oriented behavior and intense focus in doing what he needed to do to obtain all supplies for his work to deliver to his installation commitment. Impressive. Juan completed all work within the timeframe he estimated. He even went above-and-beyond and offered recommendation on another nearby, unrelated electrical modification. Juan actively communicated with me through the Thumbtack App all the way through the completion of the work, so I felt confident with the status updates on his work. Upon final inspection of the installation, Juan took the time to give me an overview of his work. I observed this and took note of his delivery of detail which translated into his passion and pride in the work he does. He exuded focus, patience, and was a pleasure to converse with. I never felt pressured, rushed, or belittled by my knowledge [or lack thereof] in the electrical realm. This is to be noted as we have all previously dealt with tradesmen and his/her unfiltered, condescending tone. Finally, Juan adhered to his quoted price for services and was prompt in finalizing the transaction. This was refreshing from the low-ball, inch up approaches that I have previously experienced on other hires. One highlight in particular I took observation on was that Juan took the time to clean up his work (i.e., sawdust, loose parts/screws, crumpled paperwork, etc.). I can't tell you the last time I had an installer [even good installers] truly leave the site as one would expect. Wow! Thank you! Juan, so glad that my hot tub arriving late caused my unforeseen panic as it allowed me the opportunity to put your services to the test! You delivered! After this experience, I would not even waste time bidding/calling/waiting before engaging Juan with Silver & Black Electric Services for my next electrical need!

Jacob was fantastic. He showed up on time. He took plenty of time to inspect the hot water heater and flush it as requested. He did the job for the price he quoted me and he is a very nice person on top of all that. I've got his card and I will definately keep it around for future plumbing work. So nice to do business with nice people.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
