My husband and I are 100% pleased with Luna's Tree Service! Thank you Thumbtack for providing us with a list of professional tree trimmers in our area. You made it a very fast and pleasant experience to hire. We were able to promptly meet with a couple of pro's who were eager to take on our project needs. Both tree trimmers were without a doubt exceptional for our job. We chose Luna's Tree Service since Gilbert's schedule allowed him to start our project in just three days from hiring. Gilbert and his assistant were very punctual to our appointment and professional from start to finish. They did a superb job of trimming our huge Oak tree in the front yard. We were highly impressed with Gilbert's artistic eye for reshaping and thinning out the branches from within. This definitely created an eye catching view of the hill country. In addition, they did an outstanding job cutting hanging branches from two Oak trees, and grinding a tree stump in our backyard. We highly recommend Gilbert Martinez and his assistant from Luna's Tree Service for your landscaping needs. Sincerely, Olga & Rich San Antonio, Texas.

Just finished trimming my trees and had a large pile of branches that I needed hauled off. I gave Eddie a call and he was there the next morning to pick them up. Fast, courteous, fairly priced and professional experience. He was even sure to rake the leaves that fell from the trimmings before he left. I would definitely hire him again.

Could not have asked for anything more. Upon arrival, Ruben explained exactly what work would be done. Then gave me a very fair quote with absolutely no pressure. He was able to work my project in the same day, even though it meant a long day for he and his team. He did 2 trees and they look great. More importantly my wife was very happy. Not only was the trimming great, the clean up was also top-notch. My lawn was cleaner than before the trimming. Leaves that were there before hand are now gone, which made my son very happy. Happy wife, happy son......Happy Customer. Call Ruben for your tree trimming needs. I most certainly will again.

Using single person mechanics, Dean took care of my trees and shrubs in the front and back yard. There had not been any tree or shrub on my yard in years. Dean did the work by himself over the course of about nine hours. Amazing!

I was in need of having a dying Hackberry tree removed and the stump ground. I called Southwest Tree Care, and Adrian came out the same morning to provide me an estimate. The price was right, so I chose his company to perform the job. The crew arrived on time the very next morning and the work was perform efficiently. There was no damage to my yard or any of the surrounding "obstacles" in the crews way. I would definitely hire Southwest Tree Care for future work!

3 Monkeys not only met my expectations, they exceeded them! From the time they stepped on my property to give me their estimate, til the time they drove off with their last load of brush, they were the ultimate professionals. They offered a great price, provided knowledgeable tree tips, plus they threw in some "freebie" trimmings. They crushed the competition. I've had other tree trimmers/removers perform other services before, but I will only be using 3 Monkeys Tree Service from now on!

We had two palm trees removed. Girl with a Thumb is one of the best businesses we have hired in six years of owning our home. They were professional, punctual, and keep us informed throughout the process. We received pictures of the progress they made throughout the two day removal. They also saw a stump from a previous removal that needed additional grinding and took care of it without asking for additional compensation. However, we gave additional compensation to show our appreciation. The work site was also cleaned daily.

Jacob did a great job on our landscaping. He planted numerous shrubs and an oak tree, plus trimmed and cleaned areas around existing plants. He was timely, pleasant to work with, and professional. When he left there was no mess, no cleanup required. I'll use Jacob again.

We first called Blake for a small lawn at a house we have for sale. He showed up 10 minutes early, came ready to work and offered a fair price. He then did more than we asked. Since then, we have hired him for several other jobs on our 1 acre home lawn including lawn care, tree trimming and building a fence. I have every intention of working with him for a long time and can, without reservation, recommend his services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
