Zack did an awsome job with our holiday lights. He took the time to do a neat clean finish. I would not think twice to call him for our future landscape and lighting needs.

Good quality, timely work with a very competitive price. I had a large fencing and landscaping project and they worked with me figure out what I wanted and then knocked it out quickly and efficiently. Their pricing was better than any other quotes I got and they were honest and straightforward to deal with. Will definitely be using them in the future.

I was near certain that they were not going to be able to do my job, given that all the other bids were much higher because the tree was dangerously brittle, huge and hard to get to. He assured me that they could and I gave them a shot. Much to my surprise, just 2 men took down the tree and cleaned up the lot of it before I could believe it. I am planning on contracting them for future landscaping projects.

When I first started looking for someone to replace our fence, Dean with Aloha Landscaping was one of the first to reply with an price estimate. He was very responsive to every question and quickly came out to take measurements for a detailed quote. Once we selected Aloha for the job, they were able to start very quickly (within a couple days). His crew worked hard and steady throughout the project. What started out as a complete fence replacement of mine and both neighbors to the sides turned in to a lot more fences in the neighborhood (I think he ended up scoring 3-4 more of our neighbors). Everyone seems to be just as happy as I am with the quality and value. Additionally, I hired Aloha to do some landscaping for me as well. Dean had a great vision for the project when I was unsure what exactly I wanted. He gave me a very fair price given the amount of manual labor involved and I am very pleased with the overall product. I will be using Aloha Landscape & Fencing for future projects, as well as recommending them to friends and neighbors. Quality products at a fair price. What more could you ask for from a company?

1st Priority Landscape and Tree Service trimmed three trees around my home. Everyone was very professional while performing the job. They ensured that we were satisfied with the trim on the tree before moving to the next one. The team did an outstanding job trimming the trees and cleaning the yard. Best of all is the consistent consultation that the owner Patrick provides to ensure our trees looked fantastic and improved our home curve appeal. I highly recommend 1st Priority for all your landscaping and tree services because they take pride in making sure your very satisfied with the service and price. I will use them for my next landscaping project.

Absolutely positive experience. We hired Carlos and his team to clean up and restore a backyard in terrible condition so that we could sell our home. They exceeded our expectation and worked within our budget. Carlos showed on time for the quote and early on the start date with all of the supplies needed for the job. The work was completed in 6.5 hours which was an hour and a half earlier than quoted but it was done beautifully! We plan on having Carlos design and install the landscape for our new home. We highly recommend him and his team.

A previous contractor had dug out an 8 x 8 area for the concrete pad installation of a hot tub; after 2 weeks not much was finished. I went on Thumbtack and Byan's Affordable Lawn Care And Landscaping was the first to contact me at less than 24 hours at 7:15 AM with square-foot pricing. The same morning by 9 AM I had an appointment and by the next day, this past Monday, I had the 8 x 8 area that I needed… Quick, fast, perfect!

We had Four Seasons Botanical do a landscape addition in our yard. Though we started the job later in summer and knew the heat would be tough, Sean & Joseph came up with a great watering system idea for the plants and now, even in this heat, the plants are flourishing rather than struggling. We appreciate their good ideas and hard work. Will definitely use them again.

Andrew did landscaping in my front yard. Everything from clearing plants, putting new flowers in, mulching and installing a retaining wall and stone wall border. He did a spectacular job in recommending all year plants, found stones that would sit well against my house color and finishing everything so cleanly! He also followed up with instructions on how to care for my flower bed. I would highly recommend Andrew, he's super nice and a complete professional. Definitely reach out to him!

I have used Marty and his team for both personal and commercial renovation projects and landscape projects. Marty has the ability to work with the client to incorporate their ideas and to visualize the final outcome of a project. He is skilled and competent at looking at alternative plans and achieving long term goals. At the same time, he communicates short term goals as he moves the project along in a timely and systematic manner. I have learned to have complete faith that when I enlist the work of his company,  I will be more than pleased with the outcome. Marty and his team have earned my respect and my confidence as I have been able to go on with my own duties, leaving them in confidence, to do their work with no worry on my part.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.
