I hired Eddie for property cleanup, mowing and trimming, hauling brush, as well as removing old plumbing material from when we had our plumbing replaced but they plumber left the pipe on our property. I needed the job to be done on short notice. Eddie arrived when he said he would and gave a fair price for the large amount of work that was needed, he and his crew got started right away. He and his staff were professional, and very friendly. He has an eye for the small details and will make sure the job is done thoroughly- I would definitely hire Eddie again.

Not only did Martin FIX MY ISSUE AT HALF THE PRICE than I was quoted from other plumbers, he did it for EVEN LESS THAN HE QUOTED ME over the phone! He could have easily gotten the extra 50 bucks out of me, and I would never have known the difference, but once he saw what was needed, he was honest and upfront about it. I have never met a contractor with that level of integrity! On top of that, he gave me some troubleshooting tips that I can do myself in the future so that I don't waste money on a service call for something I can do myself. He genuinely wanted to make sure that I was 100% satisfied with his work, and said that if I had any problems at all, he'd be back out to my house right away. I refuse to call any other plumber now. Martin, you have my business and my trust for ALL my plumbing needs, hands down. Great job, thank you so much!

Hired David to hang blinds, drapes, change out smoke detectors, do some plumbing etc. He is a hard worker and honest man. He did a great job. I We had a defective blind and while I was willing to settle for a less than perfect blind, he insisted I return it to Lowe's for another one, he was willing to work on other jobs until I returned. He wanted the blinds to be installed correctly. I'm sure the job took longer than he thought but he and his coworker were gracious until they left. I would hire him again for just about anything.

Mike completed painting, flooring, and plumbing with beautiful results! Mike completed the job with attention to detail one would expect to demonstrate as if the project was in his own home. Took a little longer than expected, but the finished product was worth the wait.

Garrett took a lot of time to review and explain options over the phone and in person. The installation of softener and carbon filter went smoothly and the result looks very clean and professionally done. The plumbing now looks much better than what was there. Another plus is that they provide an annual maintenance check while the system is under warranty--I don't recall anyone else offering that, though I didn't ask. I spoke with several vendors and did a lot of research into appropriate options, starting from near zero knowledge. I believe I could have resolved my problem by spending much less to fix my Fleck softener valve, but the recommendations to replace it all and add a carbon filter to screen chlorine made sense, given the age of my system, and the fact that it wasn't appropriately sized for my house anyway. While every installer I spoke with uses Clack products, it is clear that people have different recommendations and plumbing skills. Lastly, Lone Star's pricing was very competitive, which made the choice even easier. While I could think of many more interesting things to have spent this money on, at least I have a system that is new, worry free, under warranty, and will last for years. In the photos, the brine tank is on the other side of the wall because the closet didn't have space for it. I like the rectangular tank because it has a handle on the lid for easy removal. The blue pex on the left wall feeds a hose bibb that I use for car washing with softened water.

Mr. Leon responded quickly and came out the same day (late Saturday evening) to stop the water leak. We scheduled a follow-up visit to address the water damage (replace drywall, etc.), giving it some time to dry. Mr. Leon was punctual, professional, neat and provided outstanding quality, at very reasonable rates. I will absolutely keep his number for any future electrical, plumbing and carpentry needs.

Edgar was great to work with. I needed a bunch of small projects done on our house including: patching cracks in drywall, painting, plumbing issues, tree trimming, and maintenance/cleaning of appliances. He was able to complete it in less than a day and provided excellent communication and photos, as I was not able to be present during the work. He is very professional and provided his opinion on each piece of work that needed to be done. I would definitely recommend him and use him for future projects.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
