James replaced a custom door at my residence and did an exceptional job. The task was a challenge due to the water damage on the old door and frame. James thought through all of the details and worked tirelessly to make sure the new door was installed properly, and that I was completely satisfied with the fit and finish. I would highly recommend James for his quality of work and professionalism, as well as his friendly personality. All in all it was an excellent experience and I will be contacting James again if I need any repair work.

Hello to those who are contemplating a building or remodeling project! I own a 1950s ranch style home in central Texas on Lake Whitney, originally about 2000 sq ft. My objective was to add about 750 sq feet by adding two bedrooms, two baths, totally remodel and expand the kitchen and open up the common area. The roof structure was not conducive to this addition, so it had to be totally redesigned and expanded considerably. I received three bids on the project, one of which was Infinity Contractors. Carlos and Luis met with me several times to refine their bid, and in the end their bid was substantially lower than the others, and they had an attitude of flexibility and cooperation unlike the other bidders. So I decided to go with Infinity, and I can say with no hesitation that I am pleased with their work in all respects. The project is complete now, and they continue to follow up to make sure that all is well, and they willingly take care of any minor issues, as one will always have. It turned out that the roof design as drawn by my architect did not work well with the addition as I wanted it to look. So Infinity redesigned the roof structure in a way that made it work well with the addition, and presented a much more attractive street appeal, and of course made me and my wife happy! They were very attentive to my wife's wishes, so it made working with them a pleasure. You know....if Momma's happy!! The project was completed in about four months. Far sooner than I had imagined, considering weather, the issues with an old house (electrical, duct work, plumbing, etc.) Now we have a magnification home....three new bathrooms (one was remodeled, two others build new), beautiful hardwood floors in all common areas, new carpet throughout all bedrooms, closets and office, recessed ceilings in the kitchen, living room and dining room, a six by ten foot Quartzite kitchen island, new granite counter tops on all kitchen cabinets and bathroom cabinets. (They have great suppliers, with unlimited choices.) Also, they had to rebrick all the front of the house and much of the side, and match a 1950s brick which was no longer available.....and they did it beautifully! On balance, they are very professional, they are attentive to their customer, and they do high quality work with high quality products. I would hire them again in a New York minute!! Sam T. Baty

Justin was efficient and very professional. We had him change out ceiling fans, indoor and outdoor lighting. At the ladt minute, I asked him to work on a built-in cabinet that need repairs to accommodate our large flat screen TV, and it came out much better than I thought! We already have other jobs lining up. Thank you Justin!

Originally, I hired Alfred to put together an industrial-sized trampoline. He did so quickly, perfectly, and for a great price. I then showed him some work that I needed done in my son's closet. He showed up the next day, after having gone to purchase the supplies himself, and finished the job to perfection! This guy can do anything and everything! I just moved in to a new house, and he will be handling ALL of my projects! Painting, repair, remodeling, and fencing are all on his to-do list for me. His number will be on speed-dial!

The Dinsmore co has done several repairs and remodels around my house. He started working for me in 2008. He first replaced all 22 windows in my house. Then he closed in my patio which is amazing. He has installed pocket doors, tiled a shower and a few other things. I’m in real estate and I recommend him to my clients. He takes a lot of pride in his work.

I received excellent feedback and an alarmingly fast response. The questions asked were done in order to truly help our situation, rather than sell us on using him for our repair. He was genuinely interested in helping us, if we need help again I will reach out. I have already saved the contact information in my phone.

I had a very good experience with Ridglea renovations . They were very professional and even helped with other things around the house. They paint matched my ceiling exactly and I couldn't even tell where they patched my walls. I recommend for any drywall or painting needs because they were very kind and knew what they were doing. I plan on doing a larger project with ridglea later in the year because Austin has knowledge on remolding showers and doing tile work for backsplashes. Thanks again!

I have had several jobs done by him, from small projects to large. He has made me a cabinet for my bathroom, replaced my laminet flooring, added on to my shed, made repairs to the wall textured and painted, and many other things. He is a great artist.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

      • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
      • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

      • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
      • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
      • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
