Kevin installed a kitchen sink, kitchen faucet, disposer, three toilets, a whole house water filter and a water softener in our condo. All the work was flawless. He puts pride on his work and explains the job details. I am very pleased with the work he did for the water softener water line and drain since he made sure everything was set up for maximum efficiency. I will hire Kevin for all future plumbing jobs in my house. He is honest, reasonable and great to work with.

I hired Rodger to install a dishwasher. He is a friendly man with patience and good intentions. He removed my old dishwasher and connections just fine, but the replacement dishwasher seemed to have some sort of residual sudsy cleaning product in it (from my dad's house.) Anyway foamy suds came pouring out of the bottom and filled the dishwasher. Rodger determined the best way to get it truly cleaned out was to take it outside and spray it out with a hose, which we did. When he reconnected it inside, the controls didn't work because they had gotten wet. He said it should work once it dried out. I compensated him for his extra effort and time by paying more than he quoted (which was the most reasonable quote I received). He also offered free installation, if it turned out I needed to purchase a new dishwasher. After he left, I ended up having to open up the door panel and taking my hair dryer to it to dry it out. I also noticed that the dishwasher was quite crooked and sticking out a bit far, so I unscrewed it from the counter and readjusted it so it was level and more flush with my cabinets. The good news is that the dishwasher is running and Rodger can no longer say he's "never seen anything like this.." :-)

Mark did such a great job fixing up our fireplace. He cleaned out the inside, removed the old tile and brick, added new marble, designed our mantel, added new electrical and mounted our TV.

I contacted Chris Spene for an estimate to remove my shower and install tile from the floor to the ceiling. From talking with others, I felt good that Chris was trustworthy and proceeded to have the job completed by Chris. Since we had a vacation already scheduled, we gave Chris a key to our home and while we were gone, He completed the tile installation, cleaned the bathroom, and when we returned, the new shower inclosure was beautiful. He definitely does what he promises and I would not hesitate to hire Chris for any remodeling job.

My family had the pleasure of working with Raymond Eubanks on renovation to our garage. He is a gifted woodcrafter, and the beautiful custom cabinetry built was beyond my expectations. Mr Eubanks was accurate in his initial assessment of the cost of our project, and was completed in the time stated. I was also impressed in the way he cleaned up after each day worked. He made sure that all was clean and dust free. I look forward to calling upon him on our next project.

Ben installed a premium Rinnai tankless water heater. He responded within hours of my request for service and was on the job replacing my dead water tank within 18 hours. Considering I couldn't get any service for weeks from several plumbers, and another strung me out for a week promising "tomorrow . . . tomorrow " with no follow-up Ben was the complete opposite. He does as he promises and was on time. I should also add that his assistant was polite, bright, and personable. This was not a simple job. My old tank wouldn't drain without special effort. (And he took it away with him.) Using the existing vent hole (with a newer/bigger vent) would require (steep) roof walking. Gas pipe extension and working with poorly configured electrical would have driven most installers into excuses, delays and added costs. This project was done in a very long day; Ben wasn’t leaving without completing the job. And, with not a penny of added costs. Integrity is hard to find these days. After a long day sweating in my attic Ben took the time to show me how to clean out unusually difficult-to-remove faucet aerators blocking my water flow. This is the guy you want to hire for the jobs no one else will do.

Brandon and his crew were amazing. They were willing and eager for us to purchase or direct them in getting all the fixtures we wanted for our bathrooms, unlike the other big company policies. They totally gutted both of our bathrooms at our ranch and treated our project like it was their own home remodel. They had no problem with us changing our mind on some design and finish out aspects, being patient and attentive to trying to please us. They have a great work ethic, staying focused, even cleaning up every night before they leave. We are looking forward to having them be a part of our major kitchen addition and remodel in the fall.

I had a leak in my roof and Tiger did a great job of tracking down the location. Cleaning the gutters and putting on a temporary patch worked well. He is going to follow up with a permanent solution once the wood dries out. He also cleaned up a few other things in my back yard. He was very friendly and knowledgeable. I'll definitely use his services again.

Mr. Batson replaced the plumbing fixtures in our bathtub which entailed cutting a hole in the sheet rock, new copper tubing and soldering in addition to the faucet and handle. He pointed out on the faucet that it was about to fall apart due to minerals. We hadn't even noticed this. Excellent job in a timely manner and the bathroom was meticulously clean after he was through. The estimate he gave had no surprises. I am so glad he responded to my call for help and would not hesitate to call on him again and recommend him to others.

Recently 'Hoppin Handyman' built a fence so my dogs could have a play area. He did an amazing job and they love it. Chris does efficient, cost effective work. He listens to what the clients needs are and presents them with the best options. You can tell he enjoys his work. He is usually smiling. He has done many jobs for me over the years. Plumbing, electrical, building, flooring and more. His talents and skills seem to be endless. Not long ago he repaired my leaking toilet tank, organized my studio area, put up storage shelving, installed a storm door and unstopped a drain line that was giving me grief. He power washed the brick on my home and my porch areas. You cannot believe what a difference this made. It had years of grim. It now looks fresh and new adding value to my home. Each experience has been great even when he ran into hidden problems. Thank you, Hoppin Handyman, for your skills, knowledge and quality workmanship.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

    • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
    • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
    • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.
