Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a wedding officiant during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The safest way to conduct a consultation during COVID-19 is virtually. Ask wedding officiants near you if they can have a phone call or a virtual appointment over video chat. If they can, make sure to ask them any questions you have about upcoming work. Discuss what precautions, if any, they have in place to ensure safety. You might consider asking if they accept digital payments or if they can complete the work remotely, without any in-person contact.

Do wedding officiants offer remote or virtual services?

Reach out to wedding officiants in your area, and ask them if they can offer a remote or virtual ceremony. Some officiants may be willing to meet in person while maintaining 6 feet of distance, while others may prefer to conduct the entire service over the phone or a video call service such as Skype or Zoom.

Familiarize yourself with the social distancing rules in your community, city and state, and move forward only if both you and the officiant are comfortable with the arrangement.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a wedding officiant when social distancing?

If you decide to hire a wedding officiant when social distancing, ask if the officiant can offer remote services. Some wedding officiants are choosing to conduct services virtually and/or stand more than 6 feet away from the parties. Discuss possible arrangements with your wedding officiant, and familiarize yourself with your local community guidelines, as well as the CDC’s guidelines for social distancing. Only move forward if you and the officiant both feel comfortable.

You may want to implement extra precautions, such as using digital payments instead of exchanging cash, sanitizing all involved spaces and waving instead of shaking hands.

Can I use digital payments to pay for a wedding officiant?

Ask your wedding officiant if they accept digital payments. Many professionals are accept payment via Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Apple Pay, Zelle and other online platforms. Professionals may be more willing to switch to digital payments during the COVID-19 pandemic, as this is typically considered safer than using cash or credit cards. You can see which digital payment options officiants accept by reviewing their online profiles.

Does a wedding officiant need to enter my home?

This depends on the location of your wedding. Unless the ceremony is being held in your home, a wedding officiant will not need to enter your home before the ceremony. Some couples are choosing to stand outside or go to a vacant public place, so the officiant can conduct the ceremony while maintaining 6 feet of distance. Ask your wedding officiant what kinds of arrangements they offer, including virtual or remote services.

How much does it cost to officiate a wedding?

The national average cost to hire a wedding officiant is $150-$200. Wedding officiant rates are affected by the date of the ceremony, the time of day, and how far the officiant has to travel. Some officiants may charge extra for additional ceremonies like unity candles or sand ceremonies, as well as the cost of the supplies. Many wedding officiants have higher rates for larger weddings and lower rates for smaller, more intimate ceremonies. Personalizing the ceremony means a lot to some couples. Wedding officiants may have flat rates for standard ceremony templates, perhaps $100-$125, and charge more for a more customized experience, such as $150-$200. This allows the couple to collaborate with the wedding officiant as they are building a unique ceremony script. At the pre-wedding meeting, the officiant will ask whether the couple plans to write their own vows and how much input they have about the rest of the wording and flow of the ceremony. Additional planning meetings and extra communication can add up to a higher overall cost. If your venue has parking or other fees, you may need to pay on behalf of the officiant. Often wedding officiants can rent sound systems and wireless mics if you have an outdoor wedding location or venue that is not wired. These extras will also increase the overall cost.

What does it mean to officiate a wedding?

To officiate a wedding is to oversee the official union of two people in marriage. A wedding officiant is vested with the power to legitimize your union in the eyes of the court. An officiant also sets the tone for your ceremony, leading the couple through their vows and shaping the experience with the words they choose and the pace they set. An officiant may be based in a religious faith, may be an interfaith officiant, may be a secular officiant, or may be a friend or family member who has received ordination online.

You can have a traditional wedding officiated, or you can also have an officiant oversee a commitment ceremony, a vow renewal or an elopement. Once the wedding is complete, the officiant will ask you to sign the wedding certificate, and will then submit the document to the court on your behalf. This makes your marriage legal. Wedding officiants work with you no matter how simple or elaborate you would like your ceremony to be. The more involved wedding officiants are in the planning and customization of the ceremony, the more they will typically charge.

Who performs a wedding ceremony?

Anyone who is authorized by the court or a credible online source has the power to perform a wedding ceremony. Traditionally, wedding officiants were ordained members of a religious organization or civil officiants authorized by the court to legally marry two people. With the increasing customization and personalization of weddings, many couples are asking a friend or family member to become ordained and act as their wedding officiant. Wedding officiants can represent a wide range of backgrounds including Christian, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, nondenominational, interfaith or nonreligious. There is no legally required structure for a wedding ceremony, so couples can customize the language of the ceremony and their vows in any way they desire (though members of some religions may have specific requirements). To legally validate the marriage, the couple and the wedding officiant must sign a marriage certificate after the ceremony verifying the date and names of those involved. The wedding officiant should then submit the certificate to the court, which will in turn mail an official marriage certificate to the newly married couple.

An amazing wedding officiant! We had our wedding ceremony in his home and it completely met our expectations! He made sure to get to know us, so the wedding script seemed as he knew is for years. We felt comfortable with him-especially since we are from out of state. We really appreciate having Dr. Black as our officiant! I would definitely recommend him to others as well as maybe come back for our renewal in 10 years! LOL

Leslie was the most amazing wedding officiant (Rabbi) I could have ever imagined. She performed the entire service outside in the freezing cold and did not complain once. She attended the rehearsal and guided my wife and I every step of the way. Every guest in attendance raved about how well she explained every prayer, item, and step of the Jewish Wedding that most of them had never experienced before. I will absolutely refer anyone who is having a wedding and in need of a Rabbi to officiate to her. I wouldn't use anyone else! She was better than I could have ever dreamed!

My fiancé and I reached out to Pastor Tom when we found ourselves in need of a wedding officiant. We met with him in person and found him to be incredibly personable, genuine, and excited about getting to know us and our relationship. While we decided to work with a family friend who we recently discovered performs weddings, I would fully recommend Tom for your wedding. He clearly has a passion for weddings and serving others & the Lord, and it shows!

We hired Marianna through thumbtack not knowing what to expect, but we were definitely surprised by how great she was from the very beginning of contacting her. She was very professional and responded to every one of my questions and ideas about officiating the wedding very quickly and we knew we found a perfect officiant. She was early to our ceremony and had the time to go over last minute details with the groom. She officiated the ceremony flawlessly in both English and Spanish for our guests and it was just lovely. We would very much recommend Marianna to anyone! Thank you!

Anthony did a fantastic job at our wedding on Saturday May 4, 2019!! Our guests asked us how we knew him since he seemed like a friend or someone we have known for awhile. The ceremony captured exactly what we wanted. We highly recommend him for anyone looking for an officiant for their ceremony. On the day of the wedding he was texting and keeping in touch. As a bride, it was very reassuring.

Reverend Suzi did an amazing job. She was professional and on time. We were running late and when we arrived, she was the sweetest and most understanding. My husband, who planned the entire wedding,my only job was the officiant, was nervous. He said once he spoke with her, he was completely relaxed. She stayed in contact with us throughout the processs. The vows she wrote for us were perfect. Our wedding, would not have been the small and intimate wedding that we envisioned, without Reverend Suzi..

Pastor Art is a great man. Charismatic, funny, but above all an honest man. Looking back at the experience, I don't think the wedding would have been as great as it was without Pastor Art. He helped us along the way and told us that going forward, we could count on him for anything. If you want a great officiant for your wedding and a good friend for life, give Pastor Art a call, you won't regret it.

Michelle was an amazing officiant for our wedding and we wouldn't have wanted any other person. She held a beautiful ceremony in front of our closest family - one that will be in our hearts forever. She was responsive, kind, warm, and her service was relevant and the exact amount of time we wanted it to be. Thank you so much Michelle for this beautiful service!

Ralph and Doris are amazing. Kind, God-fearing, and overall good-spirited people. We couldn't have asked for a better officiant for our wedding. It was like we'd known them for years. If I had the choice again, I choose them every time. Thank you both so incredibly much for making our day one to remember.

Rob officiated our elopement during the coronavirus pandemic. We were supposed to be married in Scotland on the date that we decided to make it Legal in Dallas so this was a very emotional time for us. From the first point of contact, Rob was the consummate professional and his responsiveness was absolutely amazing. He was so on top of messages. Rob was extremely flexible regarding our ceremony and also the verbiage we wanted incorporated into the ceremony. His demeanor before our short ceremony and during was so calming and soothing. He is very reliable and punctually. If you are looking for someone of this amazing caliber to officiate your wedding, your search is over, Rob is the one!

We had a wonderful wedding in large part to Rob’s willingness to rise and shine extra early. He was super punctual ( he actually made it to the venue before we did ). We were a bit scattered but he was very patient and professional. Plus he sent a sample script over to make sure this was exactly what we were looking for and he has a great sense of humor. I’d definitely recommend him to anyone in need of an officiant.

Can't say enough good things about Rachel!! We hired her last-minute when my husband and I decided to elope. We still wanted to have our dream wedding to include our family and friends, so we asked her to do that ceremony as well. Both ceremonies were absolutely beautiful and I couldn't have asked for a better officiant. She was so friendly and helpful, always professional, and very flexible. I would highly recommend her to anyone.

My husband and I had an intimate wedding with just the two of us and we are so glad to have contacted Trish to officiate and celebrate our marriage with us. She was so easy to communicate with and was very understanding when we had to change the address and time of our ceremony. As soon as she got there, she was kind and a bright presence. We enjoyed talking with her and having her toast with us as well as take pictures of us. We got so lucky to have gotten such a good soul to help us start our journey. Thanks again Trish!

We hired Rob as our officiant for our wedding on November 16th, 2018. Our ceremony was very short, perhaps 15 minutes at the most from beginning to end. In my opinion, I believe the ceremony is an extremely important part of a wedding. It's when the guests are first introduced to the married couple and that the groom and bride are now husband and wife. Not to mention, with us having over a year to plan for a wedding (as other engaged couples I'm sure) the day of the wedding should be the first perfect day of the marriage. Pros: Rob is very quick in his responses. He will answer all of our questions concisely and is punctual and timely with them. I feel that that is a huge benefit to having him. He was also punctual on the day of the wedding. Showed up for the rehearsal day of and was back at the venue before the ceremony that evening. After the ceremony, he quietly slipped away for us to enjoy the rest of our day, just as he promised. When hiring Rob, he is true to his description. He does his job and quietly leaves. There's no additional fluff and work that comes with hiring Rob, which explains his affordable quote. Cons: On the day of the wedding, I (the bride) was not made known to changes to our ceremony readings. This was a huge negative that happened to me. I was informed that the readings were approved by my (now) husband and our day-of-coordinator, but I was left in the dark. I hold responsibility of this to Rob as well as the other 2 parties involved. Why I was never notified is still a mystery to me. Something like this should not affect the ceremony right? Well, the changes were a lot more drastic than what I believe my husband and DOC may have thought. My last name was pronounced incorrectly, my husband's name was spoken incorrectly (corrected after reading, it's okay, mistakes happen), and the big one was when we were pronounced "Mr. & Mrs. (Husband's First) (Husband's Last)". I've made the decision to not change my last name, and was very adamant to keep it the same. The original script was to "Let's celebrate/party" but needed to be changed. However, it was not approved that we wanted the conclusion to end in that manner. I would have preferred "Husband and Wife" or "The Married Couple" instead, but I didn't have a chance to say because of a lack of communication. This was the only negative that happened to me the entire wedding. I've tried to come to terms with what happened, but am still struggling. Please, if you need any advice, please make your readings very CLEAR when hiring your officiant. Whether that's Rob, or someone else you prefer. List pronunciations, have a final read and approval. For me, it unfortunately didn't happen leading up the hours left before the ceremony began. Be cautious!
